Possibility to change between systems

boosbcboosbc Member Posts: 44 Arc User
Recently I had asked the arc team a question, which they asked me to share with you all. The question in short:

"Is it possible to move at least my purchases to another system?"

I have been playing years of Star Trek Online. I loved flying with ships, doing some land missions etc. However, at a certain moment, I stopped using PCs for gaming and moved to a console (PS4 in my case). I noticed, that I had to restart all of the game. I am OK with that, however as a side effect, I lost all of my previous purchases. As a true fan, I have spent quite a bit on this game, just to see that it was no longer available for me. Simply put: I am not willing to spend twice the amount of money for the same progress in the same game.

The question I have are:

1) are more of you considering changing between consoles / systems?
2) what is your opinion on having to restart all your purchases if you were in the same position?
3) do you think an option should be there to migrate the purchases (or maybe a limited number of times)?

The devs are looking forward to a good and positive discussion, so please share your thoughts constructively!

P.s. moderators, if you are wondering or de devs ask, the reference to this question is request number 318401

Well they'd need one unified account system which would require communication between the various server farms. It is entirely possible, and in some ways I think Cryptic would prefer it for simplicity sake.

There are probably issues with licensing and sales agreements with the various consoles, though. Sony doesn't want people coming from PC after 10 years will 10 years of purchases on their account, because that is stuff they won't buy for the PS platform and thus they won't profit from it. Consoles are fundamentally about monopolizing someone's purchases. How do you give Sony/MS their cut of the profits if someone has and buys stuff on their PC account but sometimes plays on their console? That's really difficult.

There is also the issue of different release dates for various content on the different platforms that could cause problems. Because consoles require different development, its often delayed, so problems of buying X on PC then not having it on console because its not patched in yet would need to be solved.

With regard to your question, the answer is no, and Fox addresses why, primarily, the versions on Console are months behind the PC, so technically if you were to transfer assets to your Console account, it would probably crash the game as the data isn't there for newer items and mechanics. Yes they could bring them up to date, however, they would have to employ a good number of extra Dev's to share the 200% increase in workload to keep all servers and the 3 versions synced together, to bug-fix all versions at the same time and all the other things going on it the background.

With regard to you losing your previous purchases, you haven't they are still on your PC account for you to use.

Another thing I'll bring to your attention, is that the economies of all 3 platforms are different. Consoles currently can get their Zen alot cheaper than they can on PC, as the DilEx is fair more favourable by over 200pts per Zen on XB, not sure on the PS, but I'd guess it's similar. Lifetime is also grindable on Console, not on the PC, and therefore is considerably cheaper, and also as a result lacks the Dil stipend that PC gets. Sticking all 3 versions together would shock the economies, and no doubt, upset a godd subset of players.

I've switched all my gaming over to Xbox One, I'm DONE with computer gaming. The constant headaches, software and hardware problems.

However Star Trek Online is the ONLY game I have installed on my computer, it's the only reason I have to have a somewhat beefy computer to play it at a decent resolution.

I would love to play Star Trek Online on my Xbox and have it all in "one place", but here's why I haven't switched.
    • Well, you have to start all over from scratch.
    • You can't play with your friends who are on another platform or console.
    • You need to re-purchase everything.
    • The game is even more buggy and unstable, the rubber banding and lag is even worse.
    • It's really hard to chat with people in the console version, unless you do voice.
    • Even though a lot of abilities and powers auto-trigger/fire on the console version, it's still clunkier to play on the console.

I feel that if I could for example... Simply log onto my PC account on the Xbox, I'd probably play it on my Xbox 95% of the time. But since I need to pick one platform, it's going to be PC simply because the entire MMO aspect is easier on there, such as chatting etc.

And to be fair.. Star Trek Online on console seems like a butchered quick job just to get it on there, even though some of the UI is done much neater, the rest of the game is just lacking a lot in my opinion.

Also, Xbox Live Gold is expensive. lol.

As someone who plays both PC and XB versions, I'll tell you that the experience on Console is better, in a lazy way. The triggers are mostly conditional, which is great, and the game experience is extremely smooth. It does have some bugs unique to console, but unstable it is not. Rubberbanding is absolutely rare for me, and concomitantly lag is un-noticable and that's playing in the UK on a 37Mb connection!

Chatting isn't an issue as you can connect a keyboard to the console (via USB or WiFi) or keypad to your controller.

The ONLY thing that was 'butchered' was the ship internals, with most ships unable to access anything but the bridge on their stock layouts, otherwise, the game is 'identical'.

And as for Xbox Live, it's £40 here, and for that you get 5 or 6 FREE games a month (that's up to 72 a year, saving you hundreds, if not thousands of £($) a year) with 'Games With Gold'. It's an insanely great price.

Player since F2P launch, bought lifetime 2 months later ... I have also spent considerable in the game.
I Have just about everything there is in the C/Z store and play on alot of different characters & builds.

I have STO installed on my PS4 , and occasionally start it up, but i dont even have a char at max level there.
It is not the lack of pre-played characters i can not transfer ( aka character progress ) .. but the lack of gear and ships which is preventing me from playing the console version.

I would not mind having to start over with a character from scratch story/level wise .. but as the playing experience of everything i worked for ( event gear ) and paid for (ships and other various unlocks)

So yes ... having at least my lifetime, event and store items available to me is a pre-requisite for me to contemplate a switch. ( if the items are available in that game version) ..

Yes .. i would consider also playing on console if at least my " perks" would be shared between accounts.

PS ... Cryptic .. maybee it is time to also account-link Holodeck & Tribble....

It always seemed to be that this should be easy to do. Just save your purchases and unlocks to your account and use your account across any platform. Obviously though, it's not that easy since pretty much no one does this.

When the console version of STO released that was the main reason I didn't try it. I knew all my stuff wouldn't carry over so I just didn't bother.

Thanks for your insights! I see some really valid points. For me, however, this means I have to retire my star fleet carreer. I am not going to make this commitment twice...

    I don't blame you, I wouldn't either.

Sorry to see you go. :disappointed:

    1) Out of the question for me because of 2).
    2) If I can't port not only purchaces but my entier account progression I would rather stop playing all together than to restart on another platform.
    3) I would take it for granted that one has this option and the fact there isnt one is a joke.
