Power creep this may be, but for once, I'm utterly shocked...in a good way.

"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Power creep is the only constant in any MMO. At least all our stuff isn't suddenly reduced to newb quality, forcing us to spend $40 on an expansion and to re-grind every slot all over again like SOME games do every year. $20 to upgrade 3 ships across all toons is a remarkably good deal vs having to guild grind a whole new set of equipment in raid encounters. Or worse, we could be in a Destiny clone where you literally never hit the top, every time you get a better item, it immediately makes everything harder and dangles a new carrot in front of you, forever.

In the end, this dovetails nicely into their legendary ships and Mudd ship strategies. Upgrading a lockbox, lobi or promo ship is suddenly a lot weaker return on investment than upgrading a legendary or Mudd choice pack ship that's an account unlock.

I also cannot help but notice that these 'T6U' upgrades are double the cost of T5U upgrades.

I believe they are double the cost because the Tier 5-U upgrade only applies scaling hull and a console slot to the ship.

The new token applies a device slot, a universal console slot & a trait slot.

A little sad that the tokens will be available via the Phoenix store in the Ultra Rare section, since Ultra Rare phoenix tokens are as rare as rocking horse excrement......

So if I turned my epic ones into Ultra Rares combining all the ultra rares I do have that would be 2 per UR so. I would end up 58 upgrades plus the freebies lol. For people who do all the events its the first thing they can be used for since mostly everything is already unlocked.

Although I'd rather have something like a promo ship for an epic token reward because those are more rare to get than the Epic drops. Although I'll end up just using them for these upgrades more than likely.

Well over time we've seen that the dilithium exchange is the basis of how they do any kind of sales or major decisions in the game. So being that its spiraled above 420-440 dilithium per zen for months now that they had to make that phoenix packs somewhat more carrot on the stick. However this was pretty much the only thing they could come up with that could possibly do it over sacrificing paywall items being offered up like it has with the lobi vendors lately. Although technically what this does is not only boost those powers but also push the envelope on T5U ships. Like for example the Fleet D7 a prime example of the onboard dilithium refinement trait being it has so many engineering boff skills that any class but engineer more easily than tact or sci at maintaining maximum subsystem power indefintely for that bonus if you take that into consideration its the same thing as having one of those promo D7's in the current stats. So yeah those promo ships will be even more powerful but it also means you have options to do better with older content without blowing like 1.5 billion EC on something for marginally better stats. So overall its a good thing to be happening although would be nice if some ships had the option of hybrid station with this so things they are never going to make like pilot ning'tao or hoh'sus BoP's that those could become an option without them having to divert additional development time into something that marginally not so many players would like but at least have the ability to use.

    Idk.
On one hand I prefer this to an actual T7. This is less work for Cryptic while being cheaper for us. Sort a Win – Win?
On the other hand space combat is already pretty broken on the high end side of things and this will make it worse.
It probably will also introduce another reason to not play multi faction as the account unlock is probably ship specific (e.g. an upgraded Narendra Support-Cruiser will not result in an upgraded Vor’ral Support Battlecruiser).
It solves nothing and seems highly unnecessary. The only purpose seems to be to make money for cryptic while stroking the epenis of dps-junkies.

What will I use it for?
I currently consider the Legendary Miracle Worker Multi-Mission Science Vessel for the free upgrade.
The addtional trait and console will make space magic outrageously powerful.

I think this might be good for any older ship, as a T6 or can be a T5U, that a player likes even if the ship isn't top-tier in performance.

Cryptic is offering multiple avenues, Phoenix & Zen, to acquire the "X" token(s) besides the 1 for free.

The Zen cost doesn't seem at Cryptic's "arm & leg" pricing & glad it seems Cryptic hasn't completely forgotten their Phoenix mechanics & the Ultra Rare tier was always been the most spartan.

Is this something to apply towards all the ships in a players ship stable? Probably not, but towards some frequently piloted older favorites I'll definitely consider it.

I'm feeling like this is a nice option offer by Cryptic so I'm left wondering what am I missing lol?

I love it. For so long there has been little new material in the Phoenix Prize pack and this makes them usable again. It also makes T5-U ships potentially relevant again. I wish they would make the Mirror Universe ships upgradeable... Anyway, Kudos for coming up with a great idea and injecting new life into old ships.

If that was their intention, they could have added more ships to the epic phoenix token -- like, say, the lobi, lockbox, and promo ships. Or add those ships to an entirely new legendary-tier token. You can bet that would increase the prize pack purchases. Or heck, for that matter, they could have made a new tier of phoenix prize token that can turn any character-bound ship into an account-wide ship. Any ship, even ships that can't be flown by your faction would be made factionless. The instant such a token popped into existence, the dilithium market would explode.

It's not like this game NEEDS more powerful ships. But power creep has run out of control anyways. Top level dps players are melting through elite tactical borg cubes like a hot knive through butter. A little bit extra damage won't make much of a difference.

However, more options are always a good thing. An extra universal console slot and starship trait allows for more interactions and variety. I like it.

So... I will be able to get an additional console and device slot for my T6 Fleet ship?

And would that be an active space trait slot extra?

Or is this just for regular T6 ships? (Not fleet version).

More power is always nice. But I feel like we have all the strength in the world and nothing to spend it on.

Yeah, now we can destroy a Borg Cube in 1 second instead of 2 seconds... We can already almost insta-kill most enemies in the game, lol.

Why not just called this a T7 or a T6.5?

Because the transition to T6 was controversial. Many people were annoyed and suspicious that it was just a money grab. Because it was essentially obligatory. It certainly is a money grab. Everything done by a game company is a money grab. :) But this time it's not obligatory, but optional.
  • husanakxhusanakx Member Posts: 995 Arc User
So I assume they are trying to say.... you get a account unlock of a device slot and universal console slot. But the ship trait slot means you have to have used a upgrade on that ship. So if you fly 10 versions of one ship on your account you will need 10 tokens if you want extra ship slots on them all ? I think that is what they mean.

All well more ship creep... means we are about to have a PvE overhaul with difficulty going up. Enjoy your creep, I guess this new synth mission will actually have a bit of difficulty baked in.

I don't think many people will have the patience or the luck to get an Ultra Rare from the Phoenix boxes. It also seems that these tokens aren’t going to be permanently available from Phoenix Boxes either, but limited to special events. Main ways to get them would be C-Store. It's another win for Cryptic you burn Dilithium or Zen.

All three things basically work the same.

If you take, say, a T6 Alita and you apply the upgrade, you can then use another device slot, console slot and trait slot while flying a T6 Alita. On all characters. If you apply it to a fleet variant, you can use it on all Fleet Alita's on your account.

There's no difference between device and console slots on the one hand, and trait slots on the other hand.

They merely elaborated for the trait slots that it's bound to the ship that you applied the upgrade on. Instead of bound to your captain, as was the case for the four or five slots you could have until now.

The added Device Slot is okay but I'm sure welcomed by many. I'm really enthused about the added Universal Console Slot & Starship Trait Slot

Good question since the fleet versions are not account wide where as the regular T6 version are.

Just hope they don't do this again. Then it would be Galaxy-X-X-X. That wouldn't be good.

An "X"ed Fleet B'rel would be SO nice, but I'm biting my finger nails waiting to see if Cryptic ever follows-through for some KDF Legendary ships so I'm anticipating the B'rel getting that treatment too then slap that "X" upon that.

I did all the content up to the disco arc in a Kor. B'rel was my first fleet ship, special place in my heart for the BoP. A legendary would be great, I'd even live with a cross faction HMS Bounty if it meant a legendary B'rel in my KDF collection.

does this mean upgraded T5U ships will ge the starship trait of the T6 version? or an entirely new one?
  • ltminnsltminns Member Posts: 12,462 Arc User
You don't get that Trait, unless you've unlocked it via the T6.
