Vaadwaur NPC Ships are Insanely OP

hawkermatty#5576 hawkermatty Member Posts: 9 Arc User
I have been going through the Delta Quadrant series of missions and I have found that the Vaadwaur ships are Overpowered. Like I can't even get a hit without my ship being destroyed in 5 seconds. I checked the hull of the NPC ship and it was just over 200k while my hull is 50k. There is no way I am able to destroy this thing. The mission in particular is Alliances. I'm not sure if it is a bug but in the previous missions I have found it to be easy to destroy any enemy ships. I don't see how I can go from being OK to under leveled that quickly.

The trick to defeating the vaadwaur is knowing their tricks.

First of all is that that their weapons are polaron based.
Second is that they love their tricobolt mines.

Beware of their bombardments (keep moving) and stay >5Km to allow yourself time against multiple trico mines.

Would you mind posting your build here:
    https://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/

That way we can look and see if your build can be improved.

@baddmoonrizin this topic is probably better suited in the academy.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Oh ok. I probably shouldn't have posted this here then.

Hopefully it will be moved shortly.

Previously similar topics about vaadwaur, krenim, Romulans or Disco Klingons turned out to be the result of flaws in the build of the ship/boff layout etc.

That's why i asked for your build.
Usually there are plenty of folks who want to help others who struggle with the game. Everyone has a point in the game where they find out that the difficulty has caught up.

For me at one time it was a dreadful Romulan warbird behind a planetary shield with tractor beams and torpedo spreads of doom. We listen, learn and progress is made.

I hate fighting against Vaadwaur because of those big giant X's they fire into space, which they detonate a few seconds later. These will drain your shields and cause massive damage, allowing them to almost destroy you if you're not careful.
My strategy for when they do this, is to hit Evasive Manoeuvres, pick a direction and get away from those X's as fast as possible. Then, I can return to the fight.
There's only one (?) type of ship that fires those X's, though, so hunt it down and destroy it/them, and the rest become much easier.

Thanks for the feedback. I just made my build. I only got this game like 2 months ago so i still am early on even though I'm level 65 lol. Here is the link to my build: https://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/5ca7149842f29eb31cd31dc738153399 Some weapons and kit modules I had I couldn't find on it, I made some notes to say what they were.

That's not a bug but is actually intended. Any ship in this game, t5u, t6, and even several t4 ships, can all be made into tanks or to do great damage. in fact there is video out there of me tanking in an Aquarius which is the lowest base hull in game last I checked. @hawkermatty#5576 if you would like to PM me here on the forums, I will help you out to get started. Also if you want to PM me, please include your ingame @handle for reasons. Bad news, build needs work. Good news, we can get you setup to where you're doing alot better. soon you will laugh in the face of those Vaadwaur.

As others have stated 99% of the time when you seem to hit brick wall in this game it's due to your build being bad, that's kind of issue with there being several viable builds while still not being easy enough for your build to be 100% irrelevant, there's what I'll call trap builds aka builds that either look good on paper but not in reality or builds that work if you're talented and experienced enough to make them work.

That said good thing about bad builds is that it's generally an easy fix and there's plenty of players willing to help with it.

Also you don't need a meta build just one that's "good enough". Most of my builds are far from optimal or meta but they work.

Using your build in skillplanner i have made a basic layout with gear which should be available for you at this time
    https://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/ccd90e15a1165014172660dfe646301d

Note that if you want to follow the storyline and improve your build then you can find which episodes to replay for gear
    https://sto.gamepedia.com/Episode_replay

The solonae 3-piece will probably be a pain to get together since flying the awkward dyson ship makes that mission one of the more undesirable missions to replay.

Once you've progressed through the storyline and into the iconian war there are some items which are highly recommended and should give you time to develop your own builds

Sol defense set 3-piece. Mission reward set with good defense which should keep you alive while you move through the reputations
    https://sto.gamepedia.com/Desperate_Defenses#Sol_Defense_Deflector_Array

A bit of speed and maneuver for the galaxy
    https://sto.gamepedia.com/Console_-_Engineering_-_Polaric_Modulator

This build has a LOT more defense in it than normally required, but that is intentional because with the survival you get the chance to try different tactics and some different consoles.

    Edit:

Eventually before switching to reputation or fleet gear the mission reward build should end up roughly like this
    https://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/0c561a0cf554ac36938d6ea32bf6da3a

A few set bonuses, a reduction in boff powers and sufficient survival until you can upgrade to more custom builds.

B.t.w. if possible let us know how it worked out.

Well, thanks to @darkbladejk I have a new build with a new ship, which was very generous btw, along with weapons armor and kit modules as well. It has worked so well and those Vaadwaur didn't see what hit them. In fact I am almost done with the Iconian War arc as well. Thanks to everyone for the advice as well, because it certainly helped to know what to avoid and when and what I should be focusing on.

The Aegis set, a golden oldie but i did not include it yet due to it being crafted. A bit dated, but a solid choice though.

Looks like a build which can get you through the content while you go through the reputations and slowly try different things to see what suits your play style best.
