The patch yesterday was supposed to fix some issues with the Model Rocket Launch TFO, but instead it may have caused some problems since I encountered them for the first time today.
I play this TFO daily for event progression and have not had problems in past.
Today the mission was proceeding well (collecting and dropping off parts without problem) until there was approx 1 min left for part collection.
I was awarded a purple hull part from digging in parts pile, but when I went to drop it off, I did not get option at my desk to turn in the part.
I ran around my color desk from all angles but never got the popup to turn in part.
Then parts collect timer ran out and part adjust phase began, but I now could get no popup to adjust parts, and still had the <!> floating above my head from the part collection phase.
After ending adjustment phase with no adjustments, the launch phase began. I had Blue engine, Purple hull, Blue stabilizer, yet my rocket only went 24 ft...the progress bar barely moved. I might expect 24 ft for a rocket that was all green, or had no hull or stabilizer, but for a blue-purple-blue? I thought the patch was to fix issue with incorrect rocket progress shown, so that does not appear to have worked either.
So pre-patch, no problems with event. Post-patch, 3 bugs (cannot drop off parts near end of collect phase, cannot adjust parts, and inappropriate wrong rocket launch result).

The developers care about the ore. Heck, going by the massive outcry from many players about the Admiralty 10/10 changes, many of them think that ore is hard to come by. Simple fact is that this had no dilithium for three years, and it had no AFK penalty. The moment that it got "promoted" to a 3-week event and got dilithium added to it, they instituted the obviously-flawed AFK penalty to it. That's not a coincidence.
There are a few bugs that happen very rarely to most people, and hit certain ones very often. In fact, with the lack of details* in many of the bug reports, there might only be a couple of bugs, with the largest category being false AFK penalties, and basically all of them leading to AFK penalties.
*Examples of lack of details in bug reports. Was your name in the list next to your team color? Did you have your backpack the entire time? If not, when did you notice it was missing? Things like that would really help determine just how many unique bugs we're actually dealing with here.
Started mission normally, I was blue had blue backpack.
I got first hull part and dropped it off successfully.
Next I got a stabilizer part, and at same time as I got that part we got msg that there was a new parts cache discovered.
At that point, my blue backpack vanished.
I had exclamation point above my head but when went back to desk I could not drop off the part.
This also prevented me from picking up any new parts for rest of mission (no piles were highlighted as active anymore) with one exception. The extra parts pile was glowing, and I was able to loot from it 5 times (all junk).
For rest of mission I had no options to interact with desk or piles. Could not pick up or drop off parts, and could not adjust parts.
Perhaps the fact my backpack vanished at same time as the extra parts pile msg combined with fact that the extra parts pile was the only thing I could interact with suggests that is part of issue needed to trigger the bug.
Also, during the rocket launch phase, I had an extra unexpected popup message I had not seen before:
"Looks like an extra part got separated from the pile".

'@trekonlinegame: There's a current issue in the First Contact Day Model Rocket event where, if you load into the game too slowly, you will not be assigned a bench or a backpack. In that specific circumstance, if you interact with anything in the map once, you will still receive rewards.'

I think this "AFK guard" causes more problems than it solves.
Backpack missing/randomly disappearing is one bug, no matter when it happens, almost certainly caused by the same underlying issue. Extra part that falls out of a pile may or may not be working, depending on if it is being treated as an actual part, in which case it is definitely not working, or like an extra Junk, in which case it might or might not be working. My money would be on it being the latter, or they're just all Good quality, do to being Uncommon, and what purpose would that really serve? Collecting part not giving credit is a bug, but also easily cleared by collecting another part, you'll get both, but only the better of the two will count, obviously. All of these have existed for years, probably back to the first run of this event, and you would think that they could track them down, rather than add an AFK tracker that is obviously also broken to it, but they apparently haven't been able to. I haven't run into the last one, but I have no reason to doubt that it happens sometimes, so we have three or four bugs aside from AFK false positives. Two of those bugs, the lack of backpack during the gathering phase, regardless of when it happens, and your other one that prevents gathering, even with a backpack, actually halt your progress, The others are not nearly as big of an issue, one will clear itself when you continue on doing what you're already doing, and the other might not even be a bug. I should definitely go and track the extra part thing and see if my suspicion is right, and that it gives an extra adjustment during that phase.
By the way, your original rant in reply to my first post in this thread was a non-sequitur. I didn't say in there that there were no bugs, just that a catastrophic failure at the launch pad, regardless of quality, is probably not a bug, since it was there from the beginning of the event, and fits in with other random factors influencing travel distance.
Edit in response to the other posts. It's interesting to see that backpacks seem to be disappearing right when the random events happen for some people. Maybe there's a bit of lag generated when those events trigger and that causes a desync that can make the backpack disappear.Perhaps they could add a sanity check that gives you back your backpack when it goes away by checking for it every so often. I can tell you that not having your backpack when you load into the launch site for the actual rocket launch is not certain doom for your rewards, since I've had that happen and still received ny rewards as if there were no problem.
