What is and isn't off limits for new content?

What Trek media does Cryptic have access to? I've heard that anything FASA-related can't get in due to licensing issues, but what about Starfleet Battles? That stuff technically appeared in the films in the form of LCARs. Y'know, stuff like the Saladin-class? That'd be great, especially if stuff like the Freedom-class from Wolf 359 could be used as an alternate skin. So, what material is and isn't off limits? I'm especially interested in:

1. Starfleet Battles.
2. Star Trek: Legacy ships (Especially the United Earth ships like the Yorktown).
3. Cancelled/concept art stuff, like the Star Trek: Phase II Enterprise that'd eventually become the Discovery.
4. The ships featured in the Ships of the Line books. Those are beautiful.

    Novels, comics, games, tech manuals, and other material, is generally off limits. Cryptic has gotten into a limited partnership with IDW for some things from the comics(like J'Ula and one of the ships), but those are generally exceptions.

    Wonder if they can use stuff from Starfleet Battles or the original Starfleet Technical Manual, since some of that showed up in the TMP-era films in the form of LCARs.

    the millennium falcon showed up in first contact...cryptic is still not allowed to use it because it belongs to a different company

    something being included as an easter egg in a given IP medium doesn't give derivative works carte blanche to use that thing as well​​

    although I'd love to see cryptic and EA team up to do a cross over april fool's day joke when SWTOR advertises content with the "enterprise from the phantom menace" and STO advertises content with "first contact's millinum falcon"

    Cryptic has access to anything that's appeared in a movie or TV show, a small handful of third-party designs that they licensed the ability to use, and anything Perpetual designed while they worked on the original, unreleased version of STO (the mostly only accomplished some concept art). Anything beyond that is extremely unlikely to appear due to copyright issues, though as I said they HAVE pursued licensing deals in the past for specific ships.

    Probably not. The original tech manual was entirely third party and actually has its own licensing setup separate from the Desilu one that CBS inherited, (and Star fleet Battles was done under that license), regardless of the displays technically canonizing them in the show.

    FASA ships would actually stand a better chance since the terms of the license they got from Paramount had the clause about all designs having to be approved by Paramount before publishing and that they would both own the IP to them. The snag is that that particular clause is legally a bit iffy and has not been tested in court so they were apparently reluctant to put those designs to use except in the same wireframe on a screen in the background way they did the Franz Joseph designed ships.

    There probably would not be a problem with the Planet of Titans ship (the one that the Crossfield-class is very loosely based on) since an actual model has appeared in the background of TMP and several series already (it was a study model and not detailed enough for anything closer to the camera). It would also help the DSC show by showing a second design that could be an ancestor to the Crossfield-class, but CBS may not see it that way.

    The Phase II ship has also been on camera in TMP and TNG, though also in the background. It is not the McQuarrie ship btw, it is the secondary hull and nacelles of the TMP ship mated to a TOS saucer, but the movie producer did not like the saucer and told them to put something "sleeker" on it (which caused a lot of problems with the fans since the refit did not use any of the original parts any more so it was hard to justify).

    I think there are a few of the rejected concept ships in STO already though I am not sure offhand and do not have the time to research it at the moment. Either way, since those were done work-for-hire there should not be any IP problems in using them, though CBS may or may not have given Cryptic the ok to use them for some other reason.

    Though in some things you will need to reference other materials, just don't forget to link to where you got it. For example when I'm hunting down ship sizes I'll reference...

    and such. Because, not all the information is actually gathered in one spot. So, one has to go digging for it.

    I think ships of the Line had one of the best looking ships? USS Bonaventure, NCC 1000. I think Eaves design? Not sure on that.

    Also the TOS era Glenn concept, in memory of John Glenn, this one is for sure John Eaves design.

    Adm. Necheyev didn't own ANY Starfleet ships. Starfleet did. Also she didn't make one bolt, connect a single wire, gelpack or device, or otherwise helped on making them. I find it presumptuous she claimed it was HER ships. In fact saying as much would probably warranty a reprimand from any of her superiors in Federation and possibly not participating in said actions as other superior personnel do, would in our days(2409 onwards) result in herself facing the same fate as what she has threatened, in that same penal colony.
