Deciding who to play through with

spectre21184spectre21184 Member Posts: 45 Arc User
Hey all,
Since returning a week or so ago I have been trying various species and captains; I know there is a lot to experience in the game but I am wanting to pick a main captain. While science is fun i do not think it will be a main so I've narrowed it down to the engineer or tactical. I lean more toward kdf as I like the look of their ships best. I am a bit of an rp'er and found I like the klingon most but also the nausicaan since their is so little known about them other then their games of pain and mercenary mentality as a culture it seems like. The feds offer a lot being the oldest faction, but i have a hard time with the people on that side. The romulans look like great fun and I am definitly going to run as a reman later. But i'd like some advice, while I do like skirmishing and cannons, I want to be able to survive long enough to enjoy my spoils.

I would sugest playing a FED. Cryptic has pretty much abandoned the other factions. And I would suggest a Tac for max DPS or ENG for less, but more tank.

Multiple characters. Try many out see what sticks, or play them all.

For playstyle, it is hard to know what to suggest because that can vary greatly with your skill level at the game. Escort type ships are quite survivable when you know what you're doing, and cruiser types can be made to go fast and pew pew. They also can both blow up fast and hit like wet kittens if you have difficulty with the game.

I find preferences can shift sometimes unexpectedly, but your first choices still hold some meaning, so go with that and don't be afraid to expand a bit.

Romulans still have the nice benefit of decloak ambush bonuses if you stack 3 types of Reman infil categories with access to a few unique Rom ships and skins, and Jem'Hadar have really cool stuff for ground like cloak and other boosts. Consider those too.

Tac career seems favored in STO because of how many worthless NPCs with so many hitpoints we face against. Tacs get boosts to defenses in space besides all the +all dmg abilities, which does matter a lot, and tac ability cooldowns which favors more tac boff seats but isn't bad even on sci ships. Go Down Fighting is also pretty cool as it gives a reason to let your ship get damaged, even if buffed with traits. I find Tac a lot of fun now since it gives some challenge to the gameplay to get in trouble and manage to survive. Keep high kinetic/physical dmg res though as torp spreads negate high defenses.

Sci career is good too, though debuffing your enemies makes for some unpredictability once those wear off. The part I don't enjoy is Scattering Field since all dmg res have diminishing returns over around 50% and won't help with unpredictable nature of incoming burst damage. I'd prefer that one to give shield regeneration instead. Its AoE all dmg bonus is nice at least, and so is science fleet, sensor scan, and even subnuke has its use.

Eng career I find lacking in space. The extra subsystem power and drain resistance I find adds the least to Sci ships because aux overcap was nerfed long ago, or ships with few weapons, and I suspect other sources of weapon power drain tend to invalidate that somewhat (boff'd DEM, borg set, EWC trait). The massive heals and ability to really overcap weapons, plus the tiny shield heal are the only things I find fun with it. On the ground, eng can be great support for the team.

Play whatever seems to be the most fun at the moment. Switch to something different only when the fun begins to taper off.

As others have said, the primary concern is to pick something you like, even if it is not 'optimal'. The game really doesn't need optimal performance, but to keep playing you do need to consistently enjoy your character.

Personally I have the most fun with the Science captains. I just like debuffing and summoning photonic fleets I guess. The Engi's are good if you need help being more surviveable (Miracle Repairs has saved my butt a lot of times). Tacticals are the highest DPS captains, and I do like their abilities - especially summon Security Team on ground. Not for power, I just like summoning things.

For flexibility I would always recommend a Romulan/Reman if you have access to them, because you get more ships, more Bridge Officers, more playstyles as options. Plus Romulans are just cool. So a Rom-Fed would have the most possible options in the current game setup and are also quite fun to play.

Fed will always get more new ships since 70+% of players main as Fed.

That said, there large numbers of existing ships for KDF and Rom, and few but very good ships for the Dominion.

I shift between all three of science, eng and tactical captains, as well as between the ship types, and between the factions. I'll play as an engineer in a tactical ship one month, then as a science captain in a science ship the next.

There's some extra benefit in having 2-3 characters in the same faction with a current main and the others parked: the bridge officer recruitment duty officer missions, and the free duty officer recruitment missions. If you're looking to get some very rare bridge officers then having extra recruitment missions can really help.

Having more endgame captains is also handy for personal endeavors since each one can focus on different damage types, though you can use loadouts instead.

I'm gonna suggest a nausicaan engineer, nausicaan cause pirate is pretty good and they have some support with a t-6 ship, the entoil set, and a couple minor bits of gear. but not so much you'ld have trouble figuring out what to use.engineer cause the Kolasi is super heavy on tact slots so your captain skills being heal/support free up your limited non tact boff slots for more fun skills.

groundwise engineering is very good, and if your one of the people who hate ground you can just throw drones at the problem til it goes away.

another factor is this would be cheap as hell to build, only the ship even can be bought directly with money and even that is pretty easy to skip if you want. all nausicaans have pirate so no need to hurt up a brunch of higher rarity boffs if you don't want to and most of the gear comes from one mission, granted echoes of light is not a good mission to have to run at least 4 times, but it could be worst.

if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

The thing about Feds is they now have three diifferent tutotrial experiences:

    - If you start a 25th century Fed - it's pretty much the same as the original (revamped) STO tutorial.

    - If you start a TOS 23rd Century Fed - you get a TOS themed tutorial and different story than the 25th century tutorial.

    - If you start a DSC 23rd Century Fed - you get a DSC themed tutorial and a different story than the above two.

    this.
All the factions can be very funny, same thing for the ships.
I personally prefer romulan and kdf factions, their episodes are the best, their ships are very cool, and the last but not least, they are not fed.

While others are better equipped to offer you a comprehensive answer, let me begin with the basics.

    1) DHC have the narrowest arc-of-fire of all weapons, so you need to keep the nose pointed at the enemy. This means you need a ship that turns well.

    2) Remember that the Cannon BOFF powers, (CRF & CSV), start at the Lieutenant level, not the Ensign level like beam powers do. This means you need a ship with good Tac-oriented BOFF seating, indeed you will need a Commander Tac if you want level III powers.

    3) Keep in mind that you will probably want a turret or two in the back. Turrets are cannon, too.

    4) Remember that power drain from firing multiple DHC is huge.

    5) Don't neglect your torpedoes.

    6) Do your homework, and think very carefully before choosing an energy type.

I would at least consider the Mat'Ha Raptor if I was building a ship like this. It has 5 Tac consoles, along with both Commander and Lt Commander BOFF seats, plus a 5-2 weapons setup. And it will turn on a dime.

Play as Romulan Alien KDF... anything otherwise will cost you a fortune if you plan on building a DPS ship or PvP as KDF can get all the Fed Ship traits and consoles for super cheap without having to buy the Ship... it's a no brainer.

Alien because you get extra trait slots.

Use Disruptor (spiral is meta) or Polaron.

this one would be a better choice, better turn rate, good boffs seats, the pilot manoeuvers and a good starship trait: https://sto.gamepedia.com/Lethean_Xechas_Pilot_Escort

that is an interesting looking ship, and I may go back and side with the romulan's.. a shame that alien is the best 'race' to use as I like both the romulan and reman. While the look of the KDF is and always will be my favorite the romulan's have the best high tech looking ships imo

That's entirely subjective. If you're looking to max out DPS and know which traits will do so, then you'd probably want Alien because of the traits, but play the one you want to spend the most time seeing in cutscenes and from behind. There's no need to minmax with STO.
