Returning Player Question for Event Ship Buyouts

So I came back after a while, and I find this new (for me) functionality to buyout remaining progress on event ships for Zen, which if you've missed some days, is actually quite handy.
The one question I cannot seem to find answered anywhere is this: Assuming you have missed enough time that you don't have sufficient event time to get your 20 progress, so will need to use Zen, is there a grace time at the end of the event where you cannot get any more progress from in-game activity as the event is done, but still buy out the rest using zen? or do you have to do the buyout during the event time? (Vaguely relevant aside, the event finishes on the 27th, the last working weekday is the 28th.)
