The first episode (supposedly?) airs "tonight" at 12:01AM PT on All Access. Unfortunately that is 3AM EST so I won't be catching it until probably tomorrow evening, but if you get to watch it "tonight" let us know what you think! :)

Stickying this for use as the main PIC thread. — WingedHussar

Thought it was awesome. Can’t wait for the next episode
    Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

I know it's in the thread title.. but just to be 100% sure..

    SPOILERS BELOW...

I just watched it.. I enjoyed it more then I thought I would.

I am a rare breed of Star Trek Fan, I do not care for TNG and consider the worst of all the Trek shows. However, even a cynic like me enjoyed this show.. it set up a very interesting story with some great possibilities for the season going forward.

I liked the Dahj character and was a little confused when she 'died' but was happy to see that she lives on through Soji. Haven't seen anything of 'the new crew' yet outside of the scenes from the next episode, but it looks like they have a pretty good cast and a solid plot.

Between Dahj 'activating' and the Synthetic story it felt like The Bourne Identity meets Battlestar Galactica. (That's a good thing.)

Now the part that will get me lit up..

I am hoping that as the season progresses, the Picard character continues to be more in the background to allow the new characters and stories to flourish. I get it, the show is called 'Picard,' and he's the focal center.. but the one issue I can see going forward is that Picard really is the least interesting thing about this show. Patrick Stewart is awesome and his acting as always was great.. but the only thing more boring then regular Picard is 90 year old Picard.

I do hope he stays aside and lets the more interesting characters develop.. there is a lot of great potential here.

The ending with the Romulan Facility inside a Borg Cube was fantastic. I honestly believe this show will lead to a surge of new Romulan Content in Star Trek Online.. and I am overwhelmingly happy about that.

    Overall, my rating for S01E01 - 9/10.

It was excellent overall, I am looking foward to Episode 2.
    Insert witty signature line here.

I liked it.I liked how it built upon things you might know, so a bit of guessing that could be wrong or right through the episode, but nothing that would really prevent from understanding what's going on for those who don't know the franchise lore.

And I really liked how at the end the "Romulan facility" panned out to reveal what the construction was. Given the speculations it wasn't that hard to guess, but the effect was really well done.

Also, I want that neat Romulan ship. Looks like a great escort material ;)

    It was ok. 6/10.

    In more details:
    Pro.:
    - Nostalgia.
    - They finally moving the timeline forward.
    - It was better than any episode of Discovery.
    - It was popcorn movie level enjoyable.

    Con.:
    - The romulan star didn't went supernova, the Hobus star did. They are two separate entities (but it was a long time ago I saw ST 2009)
    - The whole atmosphere of Mars is burning. How? It has almost no oxygen, and it is almost as dense as vacuum.
    - Discovery shuttles? Really? That's either very lazy, or they just don't care.
    - Putting positronic brain into an organic human body? Why? It's like putting a jet engine into a seagull.

Since the Discovery shuttle design was apparently based on the flying trucks from TMP (and that I seem to remember seeing in TNG somewhere too) it is not surprising that something like Discovery shuttles are seen. Another factor is that both were probably based somewhat on US Marine ACVs in the first place.

I liked it, it has an interesting story and I'm excited to see where it goes. Most importantly though, the pilot didn't make any of the mistakes that made me hate the ST:D pilot. The aliens all look as they should (including an unaltered TNG photo of Worf), the ships and tech all look as they should (a bit heavy on the holograms, but it's 20 years after Nemesis so that's fine), and none of the new characters have committed mutiny in an attempt to launch a pre-emptive military strike.

My one nitpick is that the writers seem to have forgotten that the Federation and Starfleet are much more than just humanity and our solar system. I can see how the uprising on Mars could have made humans lean towards isolationism a bit, but the rest of the Federation would have been happy to help the Romulans evacuate.

And a prediction I have going forward: they stated in the pilot that they would have needed Data's memories and other info about him to create Dahj, but that all the information he had tried to transfer to B4 had been lost due to it's outdated technology. Since we know the Borg will play some kind of role in this season and we know Dahj's sister is on the damaged Cube, I think they were able to obtain the data they needed about Data from the Borg ship, and that it had been acquired when the Queen attempted to assimilate him in First Contact. How that information would have made its way to the rest of the Collective is anyone's guess, but with Data destroyed and B4 incapable of storing the data it's really the only way I can think of for Dahj to be created.

I think even the posititronic brain is organic, made out of flesh and blood.

    Dahj/Soji is a Bioniod, aka a Replicant.

I really loved the first episode. It sets up some really interesting mysteries, some good action, Dahj/Soji is super cute and bad TRIBBLE, and I find the Bioniod angle very exciting.

I was wrong about her being a Borg Queen.

For those who are like the Federation/Starfleet would never act like that, we've seen hints during the Dominion War and Insurrection that Federation values were starting to wear thin, that the constant threats around them was starting to erode Federation values, and that was the last straw.

Also, it's far from the first time we see Star Trek using century-old ships in then-present times. Any Miranda-class fan will confirm.
Plus, they're shuttles for civilian uses, so no need to have the latest, most expensive model to do the job of transporting a group of people.

I thought the episode was better than I expected. I've noticed that Trek in general has been taking a darker turn since the early 2000's and perhaps that's just a sign of the times. For instance in the 1980's through the 1990's I felt that Trek had a more optimistic bend to it. Just using Commander Data as an example in TNG he was embraced and the idea of robotic/synthetic life seemed exciting unlike similar portrayals in other sources such as The Terminator series. Trek continued this theme of coexistence in Voyager with the EMH Doctor and though one was more or less a computer program in comparison to an android they were both AI.

These days we have a lot of scientists saying that AI could be the ultimate doom of us all which feels like a new message but isn't really. At first glance Trek seems to have absorbed this fact both with Discovery's season two with Control and now Picard with the destruction of Mars and the outlawing of synthetic life. It is neat to see Trek address the concerns of modern technology as most science fiction is meant to, but I do hope that there is an optimistic take one some of these things, perhaps Trek could do what it has always done and become a beacon of hope in a unexplored future. What would it take for biological and synthetic life to coexist? What do researchers need to build into AI to make them not turn out to be murder bots? I hope that these new Trek shows ask these questions because it's easy to be an alarmist science fiction franchise and for me Star Trek was always the franchise that stood out as having a guiding message.

Actually, the name Hobus is never used in the 2009 Trek movie. It's simply described as a Romulan Star.
That may very well be the case, maybe I rewatch ST 2009 sometime.

I think there are two major differences between reusing Mirandas and reusing Discovery ships:
    - IRL, the creation of such assets was much more time and money consuming back then, than now.
    - In universe, Mirandas were used for a time period, which was long for sure, but when they were phased out, they were phased out. Discovery ships for the other hand, were used for like 10 years, then never seen for more than a hundred, then suddenly used again. There is absolutely no reason to do this. They should have better ships, they should be able to build better ships.

If these kind of things don't bother someone, it's all good and well, but for me it would take to much suspension of my disbelief.

I liked very much this episode, i'm not a fan of TNG, but it was very exciting to see Picard again. I personally like the dark atmosphere as i don't like the sentimentalism and whining often used to create a false feeling of compassion or used also as a trick to force the sympathy.

Can't wait to learn more things about the romulan cube; it is a very interesting idea.
The federation is not so corny/cheesy (culcul la praline in french) after all; wow I like that. I always hated this mentality in TNG, Voyager.

I want everything seen in this episode, the romulan helmet, the eyes of the boyfriend killed by the romulans, the romulan ship, the romulan weapons, and Number One the dog (it is so funny).

I'm really excited by this show, at least a star trek show interesting.

It was ok but I did enjoy the Romulan theme from Balance of Terror used in the Borg cube opening scene.

That's obvious, they weren't created prior to Discovery. In Universe, Mirandas were never phased out as they were fighting in the Dominion War. Basically Mirandas, Excelsiors, and Oberths were in service for at least a hundred years. This is Trek, your moment of disbelief should have started with the showing of the Excelsior-class USS Hood in the TNG's first episode, a class that has been in service for over eighty years at that point.

I would like it if Star Trek returned to its optimistic origins. We are bombarded by doom and gloom in reality and Star Trek originally provided hope that we would get our **** together. Picard has just shown that the late 24th Century Federation still suffers from racism due to its treatment towards Synths.
My one nitpick is that the writers seem to have forgotten that the Federation and Starfleet are much more than just humanity and our solar system. Except the Federation has always followed the humans. The humans had a war involving genetic engineering in its history while the Denobulans benefited from genetic engineering. Since the humans have a problem with it, then ban genetic engineering.

Well, if they do release a 'Number One' pet dog perhaps that will help to reduce pricing on 'Porthos'.

If you watched the coming attractions you will notice that the T'Varo is still in use.

Wil Wheaton is the 'After Trek' host for this Season on 'Picard'.

The plot line about abandoning the rescue of the Romulan Refugees is allegory.

So...this might make me actually get CBS all access. Yeah there was a few bits and pieces that was kinda bad logic/writing...but honestly no more so than anything else in the 90s Trek series...and definitely less than what is in the Michael Burnham show. Some of the interviews they did made makes me a bit nervous about what they will do with the show...but what I see so far...I like it. Let's see where this goes.

If you get CBS All Access or any of the other streaming service, then I suggest you binge watch the shows you want to watch for one month on one streaming service, then do the same thing on another streaming service and cancel the previous service. Otherwise, with the significant amount of streaming services with their own exclusives, it will get very costly.

I was oddly excited with Picard coming up the past few days. i'm not like that, but i've gone through the first episode and i'm not disappointed so far. First impressions are very positive.

The men in the suits that attack Dahj? it was immediately apparent to me they were romulans even though it wasn't revealed until later on in the episode.

I found that media interview to be an interesting one, this woman trying to bulldoze Picard and his reputation with hard questions, and he makes her look like a soulless automaton at the end by proving where the minds of people are in their isolationism and how far things have regressed as she represents this example, and then he goes for a double play from center field straight into the net by saying starfleet gave up and packed it in.

You should of seen the look on her face like she couldn't believe she got showed up like that. "Mass Effect meet Star Trek", that was all i was thinking of at that moment, a hint: bullrushed interview. :P

It's going to be interesting going from here what is next.

I just saw it. B4 disassembled after the download didn't stick because B4 was just a prototype. Data just in Picard's head why Brent is in the series. Picard plugging that plothole. Would have made more story sense to use Lore than B4 for that.

    I liked it.
It was a very brief scene, but seeing a shot of the Galaxy again in modern CGI was beautiful.

I really liked Dahj and was angry and sad over her (apparent?) death. Even if she has a twin sister... It's not the same. (I guess I might not be so unique feeling like that, but if I am, maybe it is because my sisters are twins -and they are obviously unique are in many regards quite different..)

I actually suspect that reporter may show up again at some point to confront Picard but she realises she should of given Picard a chance to put his own view across instead of coming across like a raving lunatic on her first attempt. if that holds true, there is a grave threat incoming to the federation.
