To better help you defend the final frontier, the Phoenix Prize Pack is changing on PC. As of this morning, the Pack will remain available indefinitely, but the ability to claim a free pack a day will be suspended. These changes will come to Console in a future update.

Still a nice addition, but dang that exhilarating roller coaster ride of emotion with wide-eyes & jaw-dropped first reading this announcement up till, "but the ability to claim a free pack a day will be suspended." lol I suppose a freebie per day is too much to hope for, but let us be real for most of us it is just a free upgrade per day. lol As said, still a nice addition.

I'm still wondering why Cryptic has lock boxes dropping as loot since we can pluck them up for free now anyways. I guess it is for appearances to make us feel like we're receiving more loot.

Hopefully some things get added into the epic section that are more useful/better rewards where even if you are semi active in the game there isn't really anything decent to choose if you happen to get that rare epic drop lol. Hopefully soon there is some blog to address this with the pack soon it just feels like a waste to break something down into lower rarity for upgrades when the thing is such a low chance drop.

Some clarification required : are you permanently removing the ability to claim a free pack or do you still plan to run "Phoenix events" occasionally ?

They were apparently, but no word on what, if, how, or when, that might in fact occur. It's why some are speculating they are either considering options for the Mudd store, or perhaps instead just decided to make Phoenix available all the time.

Or maybe are still considering it.

Still that is just speculation on my part, so the only thing we can do is wait...

No. Sorry to sound harsh but you seem to not understand how these boxes work:

    Phoenix boxes cost = Dilithium
Dilithium = very much FREE via NUMEROUS in-game methods

    Net cost to you = z e r o

I mean, granted you can convert zen to Dil, but that’s an option, not a necessity.

Dilithium is not free as you spend time to grind it out. however I have never spent Dilithium on these boxes and there still not worth the cost from Dilithium either

The free boxes weren't free either then, because you needed to grind them out, too - after all, you have to go to a specific location in game to get them.
however I have never spent Dilithium on these boxes and there still not worth the cost from Dilithium either

You also don't upgrade your gear then, I guess? Because Phoenix Boxes are definitely worth spending Dilithium on for upgrades, the cost of upgrading via a Phoenix Upgrade is effectively lower than upgrading with Superior Upgrade Kits. (And if you use tech or quality boosters, you'd get more out of them with a Phoenix Upgrade too.)

I think I'll dump all the superior upgrade kits from my account bank now. JUst need to find one of my alts with some free bank space.

Making Phoenix Boxes always available is nice, but I think in the long term its only a temporary solution to the DL Exchange. Still... it is pretty good.

I thought suspended by definition meant "temporarily halted" or something similar? I wasn't reading it as Cryptic taking away any free Phoenix tokens altogether in the future.

I figured this is a band-aid tactic towards the inflating dilithium exchange rate.

I like Cryptic trying new things, being innovative, but that means there will be some winning & losing propositions.

I have the same question, why have you stopped the daily claim pack of the Phoenix Prize thing? I have not collected one for 2 days because it is not available to claim. I know it is once a day, but if you are going to suspend it, why leave it active, is that not rubbing things in our faces.

Oh look here is Grym the person you can claime the Phoenix Prize Pack from, but guess what we are leaving him there and suspending claiming the Pack for no good reason given.

    I am not happy

As to the Lockboxes, I want to echo anothe rusers question if we can claim them free on the Zen Store why are they in drops? It would be better to drop blue items and occasionally purple instead of these lockboxes as while claiming them free on the Zen store is okaym, you still have to pay to get the keys to open them, granted spending real money to get Zen is cheaper than paying over a Mil in EC in game just for one key and same for Dilithium spending to get zen.

Although Dilithiun exchange has been aorund for years, but the exchange rate has gone up to extortionate levels, there should be like a cap on it for say 200 Dilithium for 1 Zen as an example.

I know the Dilithium Exchange is user set, but still when the prices are to high for most to use it, what is the trouble of putting in a Dilithium cap? Just asking.

I have the same problem with the Daily Free Phoenix Prize Pack claim from Grym too, seems you can only claim a Prize Pack trhough the Dilithium Store> Special Items and Boxes > Special Items.

So while the ability to claim a Phoenix Prize pack is still there, why have you stopped the free daily one?

Also, the normal forms should get a boost to rarity to keep them a little relevant.

While I disagree with Cryptic suspending the free Phoenixes, who wouldn't like the free ones, I can also understand not to keep it active indefinitely even though I wish it was. I "think" Cryptic kept Phoenixes up & active though as a possible counter-measure to the escalating dilithium-zen exchange rate in hope that it lowers it.

Good luck on lowering the Dilithium Exchange rate, that is run by players who spend a lot of real money to get Zen to exchange for Dilithium, thoe who buy lotsa Zen are the ones that actually control the Dilithiun Exchange.

This is why I mentioned putting a CAP on how much a player can ask for 1 Zen, that will be the only way it will come down,

Doing what they have done with the Prize Pack will not affect the Dilithium Exchange sadly

So you never upgrade any gear, ever?

Phoenix tech upgrades use less dil than Superior tech upgrades, and do not need to be crafted (which costs credits + mats) or purchased for credits from the exchange.

Nope. Phoenix events have lowered the exchange rate over and over again because they reduce the supply of dil. Lowered supply makes the dil that remains more valuable.

That's because people spike buy during a limited time frame event. The pressure of a large amount of people suddenly after dill all at the same time causes a temporary lower exchange rate as people compete for limited resource. From an upgrade prospective the opposite is possibly going to happen with the event on 24/7 a large number of players spike buying within the same day will likely stop. Which will in turn mean less pressure on lowering the dill exchange rate as its spread over a wider time frame.

Combine that with players now need a lot less dill to upgrade gear there is less of a dill sink on upgrading, meaning less dill is leaving the game via upgrading which in turn means we might overflow with dill even more making it even less valuable. There is a real possibility this change will make the dill situation worse not better. I could be wrong but I will be surprised if the people spending extra dill after the Epic tokens will make up for the people upgrade gear for less dill.

It will be very interesting to watch the dill market after this has been going a fair few weeks. Perhaps I will be wrong and the tokens + extra people upgrading will makeup for the lower dill cost to upgrade.

I hope the ability to claim a free pack a day will come back. I admit I have bought some packs, few and far between, though... I like the upgrades that don't need dilithium, to use for characters that are kinda strapped for it to make their gear better.

I'll happily keep a character at Drozana Station to get a freebie pack each day.

Well I still think by Cryptic stating the free packs are "suspended" I don't think that is permanently gone forever & in the future the limited-run of free Phoenix pack days will return occasionally like it has in the past.

Since Cryptic has been mum about it all since the announcement though I'm beginning to worry a bit that Cryptic has other intentions & the free Phoenixes might very well be gone forever which would be a shame.
  • baddmoonrizinbaddmoonrizin Member Posts: 10,303 Community Moderator
Well, let's consider what was actually announced: The Phoenix Box will remain available indefinitely. Not permanently. Indefinitely. Which indicates that they could be removed again to return for Phoenix Box events during which the daily free ones would be available.

Another thing that could happen: Phoenix Boxes go away entirely and everything goes to Mudd's Market and made available as account unlocks instead of per character.

Don't quote me on any of that as gospel, though, because I haven't heard anything one way or another. It's pure speculation on my part.
