I remember the good old times playing STO Beta and it's initial release, now for your viewing pleasure, take a ride on the STO Tutorial;

https://youtube.com/watch?v=wrcWIMkfVcs

I really do miss the original tutorial, it was soo in depth. I wish there was a way to play old content in it's original vanilla form. I still love the new tutorials etc... but would love to see an option to play the old ones with the cheesy uniforms xD

Problem is that it was in depth enough to include things that you'd forget by the time you'd actually need them, like how to add rows to the tray... which it taught you when you had maybe 3 abilities.

I actually managed to get a screenshot from that old mission where it looked like Q was actually reaching for a ship like a toy.

Also have a few screenshots of Old ESD, and a few other things.

Aside from the actual "How do I setup my tool tray etc...," I loved running around killing the Borg. This was when the end game content was the Borg. However; the plot was good for what it was, and I forgot about Quinto's voice acting the EMH.

I wonder if there is a possibility of bringing back Quinto and reprising his role as the EMH. Maybe salvaging his holo emitter from a wreck Borg Cube or something. LoL

I really don't miss the original skill tree. That is definitely one thing I'm glad they changed. For you newbies, the original skill tree worked much the same as the current one, with different tiers opening up with points spent into skills coinciding with ranks.

The skill tree had ship types in it. Science, escort, cruiser. You had to specialize to get hull, speed, etc, in a particular class of ship. There was no general hull hp skill or impulse expertise.

Another thing it had were damage types in the skill tree. Phaser, disruptor, antiproton, and the rest of the standard flavors. Phaser and disruptor were low, maybe LTC skills, while antiproton and polaron were up at admiral level, so you sacrificed a lot to try and max out AP or polarons.

This is one of the reasons my characters have always been locked to a damage type and typically ship type, a consequence of the original skill tree. These days it still makes sense because of character bound items that get upgraded, its just cheaper to keep the same damage type whatever ship you use. Swapping to a different ship class can still demand use of a respec still due to the different powers a ship can use, primarily an issue with sciencey ships of course.

I miss a lot of the removed missions. and am sad that they destroyed rich cultural history, like that of the 3rd Borg Dynasty.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

I too miss all the missions that were removed and never replaced with better improved version of them. The folly of STO is that they went ahead and actually removed content from the game, which is a HUGE no no for any game. Even they removed the random exploration missions like Delta Volanis cluster etc...

There is also the issue where you will never again be able to collect certain accolades, such as the one called "Sharks in the water."

Let us not forget that to be able to fly to memory allpha was nice as well. I do wish they brought back memory alpha.

Now to be fair, I like the new content, though I do have mix feelings on the DISCO content, and that is mainly do to my own personal bias against DISCO, which I deem trash trek. That is not Cryptic's fault, but the now running TV series and the direction it took.

I really really do wish they revert many things back, like the patrol missions and many of the episodes that were removed - It just plain wrong to remove content from the game, no matter how dull some were. They should had improved upon them. I really enjoyed the old Cardy missions, especially the one with Thomas Riker.

I liked the Tribble with Klingons mission and it would be nice to have the State of Q mission back updated and with VO from Q's son.

It Was Q Jr in that mission, who was played by John's son on Voyager.

Did not know that. Would be nice to get him then.

the Q we see in STO is Q junior. the old State of Q mission reveals it when he speaks of "Aunt Kathy" - only ONE Q has had an Aunt Kathy.

I did not remember. It has been ages since I last played that now removed mission. So I got my Qs messed up. It happens. :)

Exploration missions were buggy as all get out, though. You could fall through terrain, have BOFFs randomly teleport away, and have all sorts of random bad things happen. They were an exercise in frustration for me.

STO is actually inconsistent in this regard. The old State of Q mission did imply it was Q Junior, however other parts of STO, and Cryptic themselves, have stated the Q we see in game is Q himself.

They have even said, in a hypothetical revamp of State of Q, that they would love to get John de Lancie to do VA for Q, which would OFC make Q the normal Q, and not Q Junior.

I always say it's just Q we see there.

So I haven't played this game in years and am still patching... should I just start over from scratch?

It sounds like a LOT has changed and I'm wondering if it's even worth looking at what I had built from before right now.

No harm in starting with a new toon and then revisiting the older ones once you have a firmer grasp on what's changed. There is a new starting experience for DSC toon and also Jem'hadar are in game now, but they start at level 60 and are considered end-game.

Also there will be hours of patching whether you are updating an old install or starting over.

Most likely all your skills and traits had been reset, so pretty much you have to re-tune your character. In regards to the episodes, well that is the sad part, most have been removed.

If you still have some that are active, you might be able to do them, as I had some ancient toons that had them queued long ago and I was able to complete them, apparently those old episodes are still in the game, but not accessible anymore. Some changes were for the better, but others... well you be the judge of that. It depends on how back you left off.

Check your Journal's Available tab. Most of the removed missions are there.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D
