More and more states and countries are taxing digital goods as people stop buying physical goods like games, music and movies on shiny discs.
Taxes pay for roads, schools, fire, police, preserving nature including enforcing anti-pollution laws, and many other things you take for granted. I'm fine with this.
I bought LOTRO Points in Lord of the Rings Online in their In-game Store and they did not charge Sales Tax. Now when using their external Web Order Site (Expansions) through Digital River they always have charged Sales Tax. Through the In-game Store they have not and still do not charge Sales Tax on Point Purchases even though you buy with cash/credit/etc. If you buy that Expansion (without all the extra goodies) in the In-game Store you don't pay Sales Tax, obviously, since you buy with LOTRO Points.
It would look like the problem here is that they take you to an external Web Site to purchase Zen for cash. I would venture to guess that if they sold them directly in the C-Store for cash we would not have this problem.

Or they just haven't updated in-game purchases yet and are hoping they don't get caught and fined for it, or they currently tax but using a different list for who has to pay.
In the US the rules for who is taxed are complicated. My employer collects sales tax for some states but not others, and I've heard whether or not to tax some other states is still being debated by our accounting firm.
So tonight when I bought 20 dollars of Zen it came with a tax now. Is this something I missed. What are my fellow players thoughts?
We've been paying 20% VAT on Zen ever since the game launched the currency. It's not a new thing.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
While Amazon collects taxes for its sales, it does not charge it for digital Kindle Book purchases.
The lack of Sales Tax and other things is some of the reasons many Credit Card companies maintain addresses in Delaware and South Dakota.

They need to get rid of points altogether and switch to real world currency. being tax'd to convert real money into zen will put a damper in things... find a small island nation to set up shop and avoid this.

In a perfect world sure, but in reality all it does it go to further fuel wasteful spending. My State recently cracked down on this...billions upon billions in debt and to clean up their mess they continue to raise taxes on everything.
Since the turn of the century two Governors have been thrown in jail for corruption, it's nothing but corruption and wasteful spending here and the people have to pay for the government's ineptness.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
I know we're not discussing the politics of taxation.

Sadly, any discussion of taxes turns into a political debate about taxation. Including by me .
This is why we can't have nice things. Since the original question has been discussed, it's probably time to lock her up and make forums great again before someone calls the Ukraine.
Alllllrighty then. I think that's enough of that. /Thread
