BreakingForce's suggestions, 9/11/2019

Hi! It's been a while since I've made one of these threads, but it seems like a good time for one, so here goes.

I want STO to be around for as long as possible, making money, and constantly improving. To that end, the ground combat/character engines should be looked at for replacement. The sooner, the better. When STO came out, in 2010, ground combat/character creation was a heavily skinned port of City of Heroes combat/character creation. Understandable, since Cryptic made that as well. In 2004. It was a great system then, and it was still ok for STO launch. The system has also evolved in the intervening time period. Since then, however, Cryptic has also developed Neverwinter. It has brand new (and, truthfully, really nice-looking) ground combat engines. My suggestion, then: skin up the Neverwinter engines and put them in STO. Keep old players around, attract new ones who don't like janky 15 year old gameplay. Sure, it'll cost devtime, maybe new assets will be needed, maybe some licenses will have to be acquired. I dunno. I think it'd be worth it in retaining/improving player numbers, keeping existing customers spending (and spending more). The vast majority of people in STO that I've spoken to about it GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO AVOID PLAYING ON THE GROUND! That's HALF OF YOUR GAME!

Further suggestions are in no particular order.
- Make an NX Bridge. I see no reason why that ship, alone among show ships, does not have one.
-Remove the restrictions on where beachwear can be worn. I can put my winter jacket on anywhere. Why not my bathing suit?
-Please, for the love of God, give us a mission reward plasma omni-beam. It's the only energy weapon damage type that doesn't have one.
-Add Dominion and Discovery (and, why not, Lukari too) Admiralty factions.
While I'm talking about Admiralty...
- When setting up Duty Officer missions, optimal doff selections from your available doff roster automatically populate into the doff selection fields. Why not do this with Admiralty ships as well? It'd make it a much more user-friendly system.
-Separate Body Armor and EV suit slots. I've heard there was talk of doing this. Yes pls.
-Include selected trait setup in ship loadouts. I'd love to set up a beam cruiser and a cannon escort on the same character, but don't want to have to fiddle with my trait setup every time i switch between the two. So I just don't bother. Give me a reason to bother :).
-Now that Fed/KDF characters can fly Rom ships, allow us to reclaim the Bajor Defense Singularity Core. There are probably also others that were overlooked, but I can't think of any offhand.
-Upgrading equipment probably needs to be less dilithium-intensive. It just looks like a cash-grab right now. Maybe make it take GPL instead? Give people a reason to have this currency other than personal endeavors and ship-board trophies.

Might add more later if I think of more. Or if I get replies that have good ones.

I like some of your ideas OP. Especially separate slots for armor/EV suits. I can tell this is going to be a fun thread :)

Hmmmm....The game engine is constantly upgraded and is not the same engine that it was launched, so this suggestion is a bit moot to be honest.

Bridges take a long time to create and the subject is covered in the FCTs.

I don't agree on removing restrictions like that.

They are working on the omni. It will come at some point.

I think it's obvious that Dominion Admiralty will come, but one could say there is no need for a DSC one as there is a Fed Admiralty. Point in case, they did not make one for TOS.

Auto-populate for Admiralty is being looked at, but it's nothing like the Doffing system. A Dev pointed out that currently the system would only choose the highest values not taking into account modifiers that people would prefer, such as cooldown reductions etc. It was pointed out this is a mammoth task.

I was under the impression this was already the case and they added a UI element to do this.

Loadouts take up valuable database space. Considering the number of possible variants, that's a ton of space, however you can already do this of sorts by having two different ships with seperate loadouts.

Upgrading is not a cash-grab. Phoenix upgrades, Omega Upgrades and Ultimate Upgrades actually make it quite cheap to do. They did say they are working on new things for GPL, but it's just in the works.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

yes, there's a lobi plasma omni-beam. but the way omni-beams work, you can have one crafted and one mission reward omni-beam (and one kinetic cutting beam) fit on your ship. lobi/lockbox both count as crafted. so the lobi omni-beam does nothing for this discussion.

as far as the bajor defense singularity core, i'm speaking from the point of view of someone who has the bajoran interceptor account-unlocked from the event. it comes with either the warp core or the singularity core, and if you claim one, you are then unable to claim the other to that character.

yeah, phoenix events are nice. i do have most of my stuff upgraded, but seeing the perspective of a newer player who just wants to improve his ships, should it really be tied into a premium currency? (since zen and refined dil are interchangeable).

as far as the rules of communicating with devs go: you're right. i've rephrased it as a strong suggestion

-Add Dominion and Discovery (and, why not, Lukari too) Admiralty factions.
Adding a new admiralty track would require there be a unqiue prize for completing it. As is stands
-Fed Admiralty gives you spec points
    -KDF Admiralty gives you dil
-Rom Admiralty gives you tech upgrades
-Ferengi Admiralty gives you dil also, but is mainly about getting GPL

What would a Dominion, or Discovery, or Lukari, or Cardassians, or w/e admiralty give you that is worthwhile at end game, not already covered by the above, and not something absurd like "give us Zen or Lobi!"

Yep, this seems like an "I wanna farm more dil" request which won't really benefit casual players. 7 reputations would be an excessive amount of work.

It won't even help the dil farmers since they'll hit their refinement cap and inflation will make all of their dill be worth less zen.

Yep, that sounds even more like dil farming.
