for me the problem begins when the north american players begin to play; I don't blame them :p.

i'm in europe and i use an english server, because I can't play at a game in my own language. So maybe, there is a conflict between the north american servers and the european servers.?

Just another checking in with severe lag.

I have a top end gaming computer with a 300mbit/s internet connection. None, zero, zip, nada of my other games has any lag, none. Only STO.

Those claiming no lag, I just do not believe you.

One thing I noticed is when the lag hits it seems to be one giant spike followed immediately by a smaller spike. Anyone else seeing this?

Also I'm now seeing a delay in commands. For example, during SCM (Space Combat Maneuvering) I'll blip the Full Impulse (mapped to my t key so I press tt) to get to the next bad guy. The second t is not being detected about half the time, which results in me going plaid right past them :-) and I have to hit t a third time. Something has changed.

Another area that seems to be related to lag is I use 2 macros with "Target_Enemy_Near" and another "Target_Enemy_Near_Forarc 120". When I kill a bad guy, I hit one of the macros. There is a delay of about 4 seconds before they work. Usually on the first press it targets some pizza place in Cleveland (why Cryptic hates this place I have no idea :-) ) despite a bad guy being one inch away from me. Finally after 4 seconds it targets correctly.

Cryptic, more than happy to provide data to help out. I think it goes without saying we are all cheering for you. But the lag is making it hard to enjoy STO.

Yesterday, while the stream lasted, Kael said if we still have problems they will look at them - I guess its best we all should make tickets with details including our tracert to help

I noticed the more severe problems within people in my armada are from people from UK/US/CAN but it may be unrelated

I'm also having a lot of problems with lag and rubber banding. It's crazy bad and I'm not someone who usually has problems with my connection to the game.

I have zero proof of this, but if I had to guess, Cryptic just doesnt pay for good servers or connections. We desperately need them to just take a year and work on stabilizing the game and fixing bugs.

The way the devs talk about the game is also very disheartening. Them saying things like, "no one knows how to fix the foundry", or "Choose your pain" when talking about working on something really makes me question the longevity of the product. Which sucks. :/ I love STO and want to see it succeed.

You're right, you have zero proof of this. However, this lag issue has recently been discussed in another thread.

Take a look at that tracert. The name "Akamai Technologies" has come up a lot, both for STO and for a thread in the Elder Scrolls Online forums that started last year. It's an online platform intended to secure access to company websites (particularly banks and such) during DDoS attacks or after infrastructure damage. I strongly suspect that it sees the sort of high-bandwidth communications required by an MMO as some sort of DDoS attack, and attempts to throttle the traffic. And as Akamai is a third-party platform, who to blame is a bit hazier than one might hope (personally, I think they may have been contracted by Cryptic's ISP in Massachusetts, but I'm in Washington and thus ill-placed to investigate matters some three thousand miles from here).

Someone else posted this in another thread but players of Elder Scrolls are reporting latency and lag issues and that game is routed through akamai.com as well

    coincidence ?

I was starting to think lastnight that evasive maneuvers had been changed to only apply in certain circumstances. I used it across several characters with an engine battery and nada, nothing except it going on the proper cooldown.

Isn't lag/latency great. Its like the scene from Star Trek III where after hitting Kruge's BOP it turns to return fire and Kirk to Scotty "shields Mr Scott anytime now", "Ah Captain", oh dam the button jammed to raise them.

The initial 198.161 stuff is ubiquitous as it is internal private networks that just about everyone has if you have a Router/Lan setup.

I've been rubber banding alot too. I can go anywhere and it would rubber band me back a few steps every now and again. I wish they would stabilize the game a bit as far as this type of lag goes.

There are no "European" or "Asian" or "North American" servers. It is one shard, "Holodeck".

I've been having horrendous lag, multiple SNRs & DC's these last two nights. The game then behaves like the server is totally down for several minutes before letting me back in.

Connection stays up the entire time.

The info given via /netgraph 1 shows me a fairly constant 125-140ms which is fairly normal for transatlantic ping, although a minor miracle for STO's connection not to have more spikes that a german fetish club.

The rubber banding however has become more common and frequent to the point where I just consider it a feature to be worked around by assuming that abilities won't be fired off the first couple of times and mindless button mashing of one or two abilities while the rest are ignored is the way to go.

Well I've tried the US proxy for the past few days and no real difference. Lag/rubberbanding/Stalls/Freezing and power tray misfires.

Sign I guess the length of time this has been going on we'll have to acknowledge them as features

Yes it seems they dont really care for it

To their defence they play and test next to the server so most likely they dont see the problems

but they should send someone log from a internet cafe on another town within reasonable distance to let them know of results

I'm sorry, but when it's only the minority that apparently get this, it does not prove they don't care. I'm over in the UK, I don't use the proxies, and I don't get these issues, even on Risa. I'm not using a top-end computer, and I have a 37Mb connection btw.

As repeatedly said, there are dozens up on dozens of reasons why this happens, and it seems people just don't realise this. This simplest explanations are that the user is streaming, or other people in the house-hold are streaming, and it's taking up the bandwidth, or there is a localised line issue, or the router set to a busy band. One issue that isn't immediately apparent in the home is an IP conflict, which happens to me whenever I come home and my phone reconnects to the WiFi. Other reasons such as atmospheric weather events causing interference, net traffic manipulation (not really applicable to the EU or UK as net neutrality bans this practice) and interconnection issues have an effect.

Unless Cryptic acknowledges there is an issue, do not automatically assume the issue is server-side. Approach diagnosis of the issue from the user-end first and work backwards, not the other way around. A simple reset of your devices and/or router is often all that is needed to fix this issue.

    leemwatson wrote: »

But back to point, putting the blame on Cryptic for something that's not their fault or with-in their ability to fix is wrong. Akamai handle a considerable amount of net-traffic (up to 30% of it). My guess is they aren't playing fair with bandwidth or prioritization of traffic.

Cryptic HAS acknowledged the server issue. It has also even been acknowledged here by the forum admin that Cryptic is aware of the problem. Cryptic has even posted about the server problems and strategies they have applied in trying to minimize the lag/rubberbanding.

Players have been complaining about this for 5 months now. It is a MAJOR issue. There are plenty of threads here about it and there will be plenty more. Also there are complaints every day in Reditt.

I run 2 completed fleets an have hundreds of members from around the world. I deal with these complaints every day in game and on fleet discord. STO used to have 3 dedicated servers and you would see yourself connect to them through the launcher. You don't see that anymore because STO now shares 1 server with another of their games.

Just because you are not experiencing it doesn't mean it is not happening. Sorry but server issue is real.

I am surprised that the forum staff doesn't already have a PIN about the server lag/rubberbanding and continues to allow these arguments here when they (forum admin) have already posted a few times about it.

Any chance the STO lag is related to the traffic on Neverwinter's end? They DID just drop a new module yesterday.

No. Impossible since the lad/rubberbandding has been going on for 5 months now. But also because Cryptic has already admitted that they are aware of the problem in their dev update posts and also have reported to the community of strategies that they have implemented to try and help.

    Unfortunately those strategies have failed.

This LAG/rubberbanding in STO has existed in some Form for years, ive done trace rts , years before and its seems the culprit is the same as it was back then akami , this one of the reasons STO has become a once in a while game , instead of my main game i play , why Because every other game I play online doesn't have these issues those that have there servers westcost eastcoast, upnorth in NA , there all stable non rubber-banding experiences 99.9% of the time, So it is Cryptics responsibility to make sure that this doesnt happen , failure to fix means i just go elsewhere and spend my cash elsewhere , i come back frequently to check out the new stuff only to see some of the same issues still present which prompts me to move on again , this is the sad state of STO atm , some might ask why come back at all ? because i like the game and Star trek just not the rubber-banding

It is Cryptics problem. Other online games solve problems like this and I heard Cryptic are diverting traffic though the Akamai security server which is a services they pay for. If that's true then its not random and out of Cryptics hands.
