Geko's comment that the next update would "change the face of the game", explained

thegrandnagus1thegrandnagus1 Member Posts: 5,166 Arc User
A little while back, Captain Geko did an interview on on Priority One in which he said the following:

Next year's story arc, its more then just a story arc, its going to change the face of the game.... I'm not going to play 100 questions with you on what is going to change, but we are changing something significant in the game as a result of the arc we are telling and how it will... I mean its not like hey we are on Nintendo now kind of changing the game kind of thing or now you have bridge commander gameplay, but there is a significant change to the game, and I think we are hoping to make a group of players that have been unhappy, happy.

This led to much speculation. However, today our CM Ambassador Kael posted this on reddit:

Soooooo there's some things you should know about that offhand comment Al dropped that's been blowing up the net:

1) He was talking about a story he's writing, not a mechanic.

2) Said story won't be starting until after the 10th anniversary, so we won't be talking about it at STLV. Unless Al decides he wants to, I guess. :)

3) We've been giving Al so much TRIBBLE for this. So much. It's a highlight, really.

https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/ck8ro0/stumbled_across_some_info_on_startrekcom/evkq0r1/

So apparently this comment was not about some major game changing event (like the factions being combined) like some have been speculating. Just FYI!

I'd probably take it as the same kind of hyperbole as describing Discovery captains as "An entirely new faction" in the 'Awakening' blog.

The problem is people kept locking onto mechanics changes. EVERY time it was pointed out that it was Story based... NOPE! Lets talk about mechanics!

I'm sure (given its Gekko doing the writing) it's a story of hhow long and hard Picard had to grind to get the ship and crew he'll use in Star Trek: Picard.

    Sample dialogue:
Picard: "It's the BEST SHIP EVER and the CREW LOVES IT!"

Thanks for the reddit-link, now I know that =c.r.a.p= is profanity here, and you can't quote our community moderator's reddit posts here without getting TRIBBLE...

So far it doesnt seem anything changing the face of the game, even from storyline/backstory side. I guess we got to wait but maybe it was something that wasnt 100% sure to be released and they finally cancelled it? We cant know but at this point, his comments sound...funny

Personally I think it's probably something like getting one of the captains (possibly Patrick Stewart since Picard will be the most recent thing) to do VO for the game. That would be story related, AND be huge. It would also, both literally and figuratively, change the face of the game; seeing as ol' Jean Luc's (or whoever's) face would be plastered on every ad for the game. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though on my part.

There's already a Captain (Lorca) in-game, so getting Patrick Stewart to do V.O. is not a first, nor what was being referred to. It's a story-arc that's going to 'change the face of the game', nothing more, nothing less.

I don't think Cryptic could afford Patrick Stewart to do VO for STO. To date the only show 'Captain' they've gotten was Jason Isaacs to do Captain Lorca; but remember Mr. Isaacs wasn't the series Lead, plus I have a feeling based on comments of how Cryptic thought it wasn't going to happen was probably because Mr. Isaacs might have thought the paycheck was too small but came around at some point and said, "What the hell..."

I think it's great the got Anthony Rapp, and I hope down the road they might even be able to talk Anson Mount and or Ethan Peck into doing something for STO - but Stewart, Shatner, Pine, Brooks (who has pretty much retired), De Lancie, Mulgrew and hell, Spiner are probably all out of Cryptic's price range.

Well, you never know. This is a bit of a new era for the Trek franchise. The powers that be are trying hard to create much more continuity and connection between products throughout. also, I did say that it was probably wishful thinking on my part.

If, however, next year they do announce Jean Luc Picard in STO, you all owe me a Coffee. :p

The funny thing is that it was crystal clear from the very beginning the line only concerned the story. Yet people flat-out ignored that and made-up the mechanics, faction and whatnot changes out of thin air. This wasn't really on Geko 😉

Or maybe when this release hits, they will just change everybody's face.

Yeah, people really always tend to see what they want. I guess it's safer when they are specific, or say nothing at all.

I am reminded a bit about some of the reddit "wishes what they tell on the Las Vegas Show"... I mean it's just wishes, but they are also very unrealistic in what stuff would be talked about on such a show. They'll of course talk about grand picture stuff that sounds exciting even to people that haven't played STO yet, so "We'll add a Tier 6 Nova and Norway and also we allow you to repack your Lobi and Lockbox ships so they can transfer to other chararacters" is not really going to be something they will announce, because it's way too specific. (I guess the Nova would have a chance if they say: "And Garret Wang will be leading the new mission arc, playing as the newly promoted Admiral aboard his flagship, the Rhode Island." But the Norway, or <obscure ship in the Borg graveyard top corner> ... nope.)

I agree people often speculate and it turns out wrong. However your statement is also wrong. The quote in question says:

"it is more than just a story arc" and "there is a significant change to the game"

Those are direct quotes, and neither of those quotes are "crystal clear from the beginning the line only concerned the story", like you said.

Now, I honestly don't care and therefore haven't been let down/disappointed by any of this. But don't say things that aren't true just to try to make people look silly about being wrong.

He still has to show a storyline that will change the face of the game. If someone wants to be taken serious he must know the "weight" of the words he picks. Now, of course, its possible we do get some great story that will do that, but its a wait and see case. Apparently its not the september expansion

That is according to our community manager's correction cause Al Rivera aka Geko had said

Sounds like hyperbole to me. Time will tell but I don't hold out much hope to be honest, not after talking to some of the vets in my fleet about similar statements in the past, some of them left after Delta rising came out and never bothered coming back, even though it was said it was the best expansion ever and all the players loved it, apparently.

DR was an awesome story till some folk complained about having to do patrols and that the enemy was too hard. Bear in mind that people are 10 times more likely to complain than compliment.

There were two problems with it.
    • The sudden jump in HP that the NPCs had
    • The amount of XP we got

There was not enough XP to get us to the next mission, so we had to grind like hell to even play the next story mission. And then we had to contend with NPCs that were HP Sponges. Builds that were top end pre DR were struggling when DR hit. Even on NORMAL some of the HP values were extremely high. I think I ended up fighting the space portion of the siege of Vaadwaur Prime for about an hour because the bigger ships had so much HP. ON NORMAL.
Mechanics you can figure out. But when you suddenly have HP sponges... yea that's a problem.

All true, but people continued to whine and moan for many months after that was fixed. Years later they're mocking the "best expansion ever" quote even though (once tweaked) it really was a very good expansion. Except for the episode helping Neelix bake cookies and fix the sink. That needed an option to join in with the slaughter of the Talaxians :)

Yeah, I can't wait for an ensign to assign my Fleet Admiral to the colony on Doom Bass V to punch frickin' marmosets with frickin' lazers of their fricken heads.

Seriously, though, I have my theories on what this "game changing" story might entail, but if I write about it here I'll get banned.

Honestly IMO the Delta Expansion was tied with the Gamma Quadrant Expansion (I include the Tzenenkthi Story arc in that expansion, if thought it was technically preceding it as they were tied together strongly plot wise and both tied to DS9).

Think it could be as simple as moving on from Discovery themed stuff (I include Awaken in that because it still draws its stuff from Discovery), which would make those players that don't like Discovery very happy. Moving onto the Mirror Leeta Finishing arc for now would achieve that. Actually if that is the last mirror leeta arc that would also make those who dislike her happy too, because we would move on from her (personally I like her). Maybe even Sela's story wraps up once and for all.
