Ships.... performance or preference??

saber68saber68 Member Posts: 28 Arc User
Just wondered which people would choose? One of my favourite ships to fly is the fleet Galaxy dread, I know it's pretty dated now and has terrible Boff Seating but I love using It and the Galaxy bridge pack. I am usually a tank and I parse around 55-60k DPS (ISA) while holding most of the agro.

However, using as close to the same build as possible in my vengeance or Gagarin, I parse around 90K DPS and much higher damage in. Would you always go for the better performing ship or the ship you prefer?

I only use ships I like flying. I never choose 'performance' over preference as I do not chase DPS (as my paltry DPS parses would show). Still, I kill things and survive, so that's all I care about.

Now, which ship do I prefer? It depends on which captain I'm playing. My main loves his Eternal. Other captains like the Chronos and my AoY flies a Paradox.
Now a LTS and loving it.

Space Barbie is the real endgame.

My captains fly a ship that fits their theme. With good gear they all do enough DPS for Advanced content and I'm too lazy for Elite.

I agree and I enjoy the game much more in the ship I prefer, it just bothers me when I'm playing that I know I could be doing better in another ship. I'm my own worse enemy!

Keep remembering this, as it's all that should matter.

Just because you could 'perform' better in another ship doesn't mean that better performing ship will make you happy.

Climbing the DPS charts is a different kind of game play than just doing "good enough" DPS and enjoying the story episodes, battle zones and TFOs with other random players.

If you want to give that a try you could create a new captain dedicated solely to DPS chasing and make that their theme. It will probably be very expensive if you want to climb too high on the leader board though: special lock box traits, gear with "perfect" mods, buying ships just for their mastery traits, and so on.

Ever since DR, I've almost always flown whatever needs a trait unlocked. It would, after all, be a waste of ship XP to fly a ship that's already maxed.

Dont view ships as anything static. They are nothing more in STO than a pair of shoes are in RL. Just pick a fitting pair to do what you like to do next and change back whenever you done.

The Gagarin has the upper performance hand but if u like the Galaxy better there is no reason not to fly it all the time except for the next DPS record of yours. ;)

I was delighted when the scaling T6 thing came out, because it meant my merc Romulan (he started working for the Republic because the pay, while less than most contracts, was at least steady - then Hakeev messed with his mind, and now he's out for revenge) can fly an appropriate ship. He started off with the T'liss that was in orbit around Virinat, but as soon as he'd amassed enough credits (game terms: once he finished the tutorial), he bought himself a third-hand Bajoran Interceptor, and outfitted it with a fourth-hand warp drive and whatever weapons he could scrounge up, mostly cannons. (He even has a quad phaser cannon he picked up from a contact in the Federation!)

In short, I fly for preference, and let performance worry about itself. The Nei'rrh seems perfectly capable of vaporizing all of Rekhet tr'Sevel's enemies just fine.

I try to fly something that fits the particular captain's theme but like a lot of players on a tight budget usually end up flying something else more often. Sometimes I like the substitute better, sometimes I go back to the preference, but most often so far I end up grinding event ships for the traits on various alts.

That said, one of the ships I like that most people I talk to think is junk is the Star Cruiser. Another one like that I have taken a liking to is the Ytjara and happily it fits one of my captain's themes exactly (though it would be better if I could turn off the Tempral rep shield visuals without it killing the engine and deflector visuals at the same time).

I have characters who nominally fly the Atrox and the Orion "peanut" for rp/style reasons, but who are currently on other ships grinding for the traits and will hopefully be more viable returning to them afterwards. Realistically, all but one of my KDF captains should be flying Orion ships but only the one actually does.

Some of them (especially characters that started out in paper-and-dice Trek games that I recreated in STO) I cannot get the right ships for because they either do not exist in the game at all or they are inaccessible at my budget level on the exchange or behind a randomization wall. Some examples:

    * I have a kind of "drow" themed captain who would be best flying a Tholian carrier.

    * A Kobali one I have the ground costume for but at the time I did not realize just how low the odds were of getting a gold phoenix token so the Samsar remains out of my reach.

    * A whole bunch of Romulans who flew ships like the FASA Winged Defender, Bright One, and others from that game that of course do not exist in STO (though I am seriously thinking of using the T6 token to pick up one of the Scimitar variants as a Winged Defender analog since they look like a cross between a Scimitar and the Kara variant of the Ha'apax).

*At least two who should be flying one of the TOS-style ships, and one that should be flying an NX (those I will probably eventually get, though it could take quite a while, and the "ENT" captain did fly the T1 NX for the short period of time it was practical to do so).

Conversely, I have a mixed Orion/Romulan captain from a very crazy (FASA again) Tal Shiar campaign that was part of the crew of a captured Federation civilian Immaculata-class they used to poke around in the Federation with. I was able to kitbash a Tactical Escort into something (very) vaguely similar only to find out I did not like the ship (I may try again sometime with an Aquarius destroyer, it is a closer match visually (still not saying much) though I am not sure if it has a different enough feel from the TE). Right now that captain is flying a S'torr which is about as thematically opposite as possible visually while still sticking to escorts but the ship itself is nice to fly. The Immaculata looks like this btw:

Any t6 ship, any t5, and several t4s even can be made into tanks. There is no set in stone "best" tank build despite what some people may tell you. Personally I tend to stick to the larger beefier ships because they typically lend more tools to the way I fly. Galaxy X is still a great ship to tank with. Ships in this game are basically turtle shells with varying base properties such as their boff seating. What you load them with and how you fly them determines how effective they will be. In this game it's about 20% gear and setup, the other 80% is how you fly it. You can give 2 people the exact same build and the numbers can fluctuate wildly due to how the equipment is used. If you like the Gal X then use it. From the damage you're saying you're pulling that's well more than enough to clear 99% of the content in game. You're good to go.

I play what I prefer the character to have, and performance of each ship has little to do with the choice. Any ship can be made 'good'. I don't let another's opinion influence anything I play.

"What I want, when I want, for as long as I want".

There's a reason my very first character made all the way back in ancient times (2012) is a Tactical Officer who got a Galaxy as soon as he became Captain and is still in a Galaxy today.

TRIBBLE, he was in that Galaxy Class for years before I was able to buy the Galaxy Class Retrofit as a suitable upgrade.

    Combination of both.

I want something that it is cool to look at yes.. but if it's a dud on stats, I won't buy it (Buran.)

It doesn't have to be super powerful, but yeah.. it does have to at least be able to support a descent build or I'm not interested. If it's powerful but ugly.. I usually skip it too.

    There is a middle ground.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Absolutely convinced I will be flying my Galaxy X for a long time to come. :) (Quietly hoping for a new version when Picard is back on screen though)

Preference. I've never parsed, and I don't group, so it doesn't really matter much what I fly. /shrug

The Yamato (T6 Galaxy 6) is a pretty powerful ship. It makes a great Aux2Bat beam boat for DPS and it makes a solid beam tank as well.

Maybe it's not the top ship in the game, but there is absolutely nothing that a T6 Galaxy X can't handle. There is nothing at all wrong with the Yamato, it's solid.

Sadly the turn rate of the Gal X turned me off from using it any further, my torpedo build certainly wont benefit from it.

I can only concur with the general consensus of the other respondents of this thread: Literally any T6 ship that you prefer for whatever reason is more than enough to curb-stomp Player-versus-environment content in this game. If you like the Galaxy or Galaxy-X, rock it with pride sir.

    Resolute-class Advanced Heavy Cruiser

Except for my lone Klingon Captain, all my other COs Command a Resolute.

    My Klingon Commands a Samsar.

So, I guess the answer is - The ship I prefer. I get a performance that works for PVE/Episodes. I'm here for the story - The Adventure, not the DPS. :)

I'm always in a tug of war between performance and looks and end up settling somewhere in the middle. Maybe a slight compromise towards looks. I also love the Galaxy but FEDs just have way too many great options to settle for that ship's boff seating. As a result I end up using other ships on all my FEDs outside of the typical canon options.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Preference. Definitely. Shoot...my engineer is flying around in a T-4 Vor'cha, my Rom is flying around in the T-5 Jem'Hadar Attack Ship (the one from the Phoenix Box) and several are in BoP.

And I hate upgrading. So, there you have it. Performance is out the window here.

The Galaxy X is a great ship. I got the T5U Galaxy when the free ship token came out for lvl 65 captains and I love it too. And the Yamato, as @darkbladejk talked about is also good. My son has one on his account.

My captains all fly different ships until they find one they like. It could be z-store, lobi or Exchange (my luck with promo ships is abysmal). I have a very good friend who's bought me some lockbox/promo ships for captains who wanted them.

My AoY flies a Paradox thanks to her and my Rom flies the Iconian flight deck cruiser as their main ships. My main Fed flies an Eternal. My main F2P flies the Y'tijara.

So fly what you like. If you want to do DPS on someone, do as dave recommended and start a new character just for that.

I play pretty casually in less than ideal postures having the laptop on my lap on the sofa so I generally prefer the pet ships as they make missions so much more manageable for me. I never aim for dps league levels but can easily do most missions like that. So my preference is functionality and looks trumps performance.

I pretty much choose my ships based on what looks interesting. Each toon usually winds up with a specific ship or two that they spend most of their time in. I've been playing on and off since shortly after the LoR launch, so I've acquired a fair stable of ships to pick from. Giveaways and event ships helped me explore different playstyles and get characters settled into something that fits.

My first character's pretty much always been a Sovereign pilot since I love First Contact, and I think the Assault Cruiser Refit was the first ship I bought from the C-Store. A Romulan toon primarily runs a Dyson variant since I love the look of that line and they were the only science warbirds for a very long time; still the best looking in my opinion. Another toon mostly flies a Heavy Escort Carrier, but also picked up a Voth Bastion because I've always liked the lines of that hull, though the boff seating isn't quite to my liking. There are a lot of ships in this game, and just going for the "best" might mean missing out on something really fun.

Similar to what seaofsorrows said, I think the ability to get some performance out of the ship is a part of the preference, but in the end I just "like" some ships more than others even if they're statistically worse and will use those I like.

Though actually right now I am on a completionist trip for starship masteries across all toons which will probably mean I won't use my go to ships for a long time to come ...

Saying that, as things stand I am absolutely smitten with my DSC Constitution and have actually found something of a balance here. I LOVE the design and do respectable DPS in it. So this one is a win-win really.

    Same with me.

For Beam Builds, the Discovery Constitution has found the sweet spot between performance and aesthetics. It can dish out the damage and look really good doing it. To me, right now.. it's the closest to a 'perfect' ship that I have flown in this game.

For Cannons, it's still the Gagarin for me. I like the looks of it in both the the Discovery and 25c skins. It's nice that it also happens to be a really good ship for damage.

I have an Engineer that flies the Andorian Kuthar just for performance.. I didn't hate the look of the ship or anything I just didn't love it either. After kit bashing it with the Thoyzn though I actually started to like it's looks as well and now it's one of my favorite ships in STO.

So far, I have always been able to find a balance between looks and performance. Usually the better DPS ships either already look good in my opinion, or can be kit bashed to look good. I'm not a big fan of the Miracle Worker Juggernaut's looks which is why I don't own one despite it being the current DPS king. Well, that and it's lousy 20 Inertia rating. I'm perfectly happy in the Gagarin which is only very slightly worse while still being something I enjoy flying.
