Promo Ship Compromise Thread

sentinel64sentinel64 Member Posts: 900 Arc User
I think most players recognize that this game, like many others, will not give up on the cash grab of lottery boxes. Since they are now a part of the gamers reality then there is this possible compromise with the players.

Each box, or whatever device, that could reward a premium reward item will reward a premium token if it does not have the actually prize. The idea is that if a player purchases enough boxes or packets to get a specific amount of tokens then they can trade those tokens for a premium reward item. For example, if a players spends $250 on boxes and gets no premium reward items but the number of tokens associated with that many boxes or packets then the player can just trade the tokens in and get the premium reward.

Of course, you say that this sounds like the Lobi but the difference will be that the tokens will only buy an player-account locked premium reward item (not for trade), so if the player's goal is to win an item for trade then they have to continue doing the lotto. The goal is to avoid excessive spending for an item that is not worth the amounts being wasted in real money. A player is guaranteed to get the final reward if the person spend the designated amount in lotto purchases. Of course, if they win a ship before hitting the magic number then the player walks away happier.

The game gets its infusion of cash from diehards that will have a target amount and players will not be so upset about spending 250 dollars and getting nothing but filler rewards.

Ok OP, for some reason you know about lobi and even mentioned it and somehow managed to come up with this bizarre idea. How about instead of this idea of yours, you simply augment existing lobi? Say you have your 900 lobi and say you use it to buy a ship. That purchase gives you an account bound box. When opening, it gives you two choices, a full account unlock or a new box that is not bound and can be sold but is a character unlock only? I admit that this is still a bizarre idea on my part but it adds value to lobi ships for players that actually earned lobi while retaining the ability to F2P buy lobi ships on the exchange and mostly preserves the value of lobi for the in-game economy from a macro stand point.

Alternatively, there could be 2 versions of the same lobi ship in the lobi store. 1 version that is account bound and unlocks an account wide unlock on the ship. And a second version that is not bound in any way and is only a single character version. Much simpler and more realistic to implement than your idea. Though I agree with Az that even this will never happen.

    there is already several pretty big compromises in place. 16m.ec x 70 boxes ( 14k zen ) = 1.1 B ec , dil-zen store , exc. ...

You can already buy 100% guaranteed lock box, lobi and pack ships from the exchange, I've done it many times.

What you're asking for is improving the odds to get a ship.

Right now on average 250 lock boxes gets you a lock box ship. But with the RNG that means some people get multiple ships while others get none. With a guaranteed ship per 250 in addition to the RNG ship per 250 average, you are doubling the payout per 250 boxes.

If Cryptic does that it cuts their loot box income in half at the start, though it's possible that the doubled chance will get them some of it back from increased loot box sales.

I'm not against the idea of a 2,000(?) lobi character-bound version of lock box and pack ships, you just have to realize that Cryptic loses money offering them.

You just better off finding a new game that doesn't require gambling.

Since people love to compare games... Avengers Alliance had a system where it'd track the number of boxes you'd opened and it'd give you the big prize once you'd gotten enough. BUT.... There was literally no item trading in the game at all. So once you got a character unlock you couldn't get a second one.

This meant that effectively there was no in-game economy though and that made the purpose of collecting lockbox items different. This is true of a lot of games though. In Overwatch you can't give your lootboxes to other players.

The game already has a massive compromise, which benefits the players - the game, in it's entirety, is provided for free - even T6 ships are offered for free during various events. There is NOTHING inside a lockbox that a player needs - they are pure vanity items.

I see nothing wrong with the system as it is - if you cannot afford to pay for lockboxes as they stand - then simply don't use them, because as I said, nobody 'needs' a single item that they provide.

If however you feel you 'must' have a vanity item in order to enjoy the game, then I see no reason why Cryptic should change the way it generates its funds.

I agree with the others. There's already guaranteed ways of getting a ship without opening the Lockboxes.

The whole game is free to play and lockboxes are one way they keep it running. By people buying keys to open them up with.

I myself have felt no desire to acquire the rare-box drop ships. A friend once bought me a Paradox for my AoY, and a Wells and I'm happy with both, but most of the time I acquire the free event ships and I'm satisfied with them even when others are vehement in their criticisms.

I see no reason that the OP's idea is a good one. Besides, there are no gamble boxes in this game.

Took the words right out of my mouth. This game is around 30GB in size and has 150k+ files to maintain as well as the new content that's added on. When I buy anything, it's me rewarding Cryptic for their work. If I open a box, I understand that as well as getting some lobi, I will receive an extra item guaranteed. I am buying a product, not risking real world assets for a chance to win nothing. That's the legal difference between what some people consider gambling and what the legal stance is. To put this into context; I also play with numerous toons, so the keys I acquire are with the effort I put into the game, and I have never considered Cryptic's lockbox model as gambling nor exploitative.

If people want to get up in arms at a P2W lockbox oriented Trek game, go play ST: Alien Domain (Browser) or ST: Star Fleet Command. Now those do exploit people with their meager lockbox 'rewards', that are only any use when you've bought X blueprints etc. You can spend $100's and hundreds of hours just trying to get competitive with other players, but in STO you can get on par, for free, with TFO requirements within 28 hours of gameplay, and the best bit about this game, beyond any other reasoning is the fact you can't be forced into PvP and you can't lose months of well earned stuff to other players. Some people just want everything for as little as effort as possible, but I for one enjoy putting in the effort as I appreciate what I earn, and some cases, buy in this game.

    I agree with leem.

I don't want things handed to me for no effort, I at least want to work for what I do get. Which is why I'm not all that fussed about the so-called 'grind' it requires to get T6 ships or consoles/weapons/pets.

I've seen a lot of anger over the decision to make the Discovery Constitution class a R&D box only item. I'd like to make a constructive suggestion to alleviate the situation. Currently NONE of the updated TOS era T6 Enterprises are available from the C-store. Couldn't we TOS fans have SOMETHING we can buy with Zen? Some ideas: Move the Abramsverse Enterprise to the Zen Store. Hasn't it been around long enough? What about the Abramsverse 1701A? Ideally with some extra parts so you could customize it for more of a classic look. Finally what about an original design that keeps more to the classic TOS proportions? Something along the Excalibur Vesper class but maybe scaled up to a more modern size. Might make you a some money and take a little heat off of the game. Next Gen fans can get a T6 E or D easily. Seems a bit of a raw deal for the TOS fanclub.

At this point the only extremely slim chance of a connie appearing in the C-Store is if they take a page out of SWTOR's book and throw one of the existing ones on there for a limited time (a day or maybe a week) at a higher than usual price with the single-character part still intact.

I do not think this will ever happen, however it IS an option that they have and Cryptic has basically confirmed at this point that a standard C-Store offering will never happen for any variation of the Constitution class.

I think the only compromise we will ever get is them putting it in the Lobi store... that way they can still get us spending zen to open a lock box to get 5 Lobi crystal

    Probably.

And OP... there are currently no plans for anything from Beyond. That includes the survival gear (An outfit I would love to have in game) and the Enterprise-A.

Cryptic/Perfect World want you to spend hard earned money to get the ship and guarantee you will spend too much for what its really worth. I would buy it if it was $30 in zen store I refuse to spend $50-$100 and possibly never getting one. They need to make it so the chance is a bit easier. All i see is more and more Money grabs and its a shame too.

This 100% makes no sense. JJ Trek is not the same as TOS. TOS fans have stuff in the c-store to buy already anyway. All the way up to T6 ships if they buy all the requisite stuff. Now if you want to say that JJ Trek fans have nothing in the c-store, I think you're correct but I have to ask you? What does that have to do with the Discoprise? That's not even a compromise in any way as those ships all have nothing to do with one another. If I REALLY wanted a TMP T6 Constitution, that's what I'd want. I wouldn't care of the Jjprise was in the c-store because it isn't the TMP Consitution. The same is true for the reverse situation.

Let me ask - would you prefer getting your years salary all at once or spread out over time? Which would allow you to have more money in the long term?

That's a terrible analogy, you're comparing a single person's income to that of a business. I, personally, would rather have it spread out through the year in the form of bi-weekly pay checks as my pay has always been. The reason is that giving it to me all at once has much more potential for me to irresponsibly waste money needed for bills. If I won the lottery my feelings on the matter would be different, but you said salary.

But speaking of Sechs, here is another compromise idea: Cryptic please release the Sech Battlecruiser as C-Store ship, then you can keep selling D7 and Disconnie as promo box in the form they are. (Plus minus any bugfixes, enhancements and balances changes you feel necessary to make.)
