It's a prepatch for the one coming in next week. They do that so you don't have to spend all day watching the one huge download.

And by Major Update, that is those on PC that occur on a Tuesday rather than a Thursday. It gives them additional days to correct egregious errors before a Weekend.

It's a coin toss whether or not the preload actually works and you're not made to do the entire thing all over again come patch day.

I usually cancel the preload until the sunday before as it has in the past redone the entire preload multiple times and tends to hog my connection as it does so.

    Really?

I have always done the pre-loads and found that it dramatically reduced my wait times on patch day. I did this one on both my PC and my Laptop.. I pretty much always do them. I don't think I have ever had to re-do the update on patch day.

Well you usually have to patch at least something on patch day, but dramatically less.

Absolutely, I still have to patch.. it's just usually about the size of a normal patch if I do the pre-load.

Yeah and it's not like STO is the only game that does it, WoW used to do that (I don't play anymore so I can't for sure for the current state) and IIRC FF14 does as well for major patches.

It's simply practical for both the developers (less patch to download at launch so less risk for server to get overloaded) and players (less time watching the game patch and more time playing).
