No love for Luna class after all this time?

thenoobthenoob Member Posts: 7 Arc User
Would anyone else like to see the Luna class Reconnaissance Science Vessel revisited in a tier 6 refit?
It seems that the Aventine kinda stole its thunder as the sexiest science vessel in the fandom, but maybe if that hype has died down we could see an updated variant of the Luna?

The original Tier 5 non-canon ships did not really have a good standing in STO. The original Star Cruiser, Deep Space Science Vessel, Patrol Escort and Recon Science Vessel still have no Tier 6 variant. Theoretically, the Recon Science Vessel should have a bit more popularity since it's at least a ship from licensed work - I guess the Titan novels were never as influential as the Destiny novels? (I've read neither.)

Or it's really the ship, because I definitely prefer the Vesta over the Luna. The Luna has an extremely ugly engineering/deflector section.

I think most of the ships in the game are eventually going to get the T6 treatment as time goes on. But it will take significant time. Tier 6 came out in 2014. The Ambassador-class, a canon starship that was once an Enterprise, was only upgraded to T6 at the end of last year, a full four years later.

That said, I tend to agree with above. Most of the non-canon ships are probably going to fall off the radar. The Vesta is likely a special case because (I think) it was pretty well received by the players. Plus it's an incredibly detailed design that's much more up to Cryptic's modern standards.

Cryptic does often retouch the original models when moving a class to T6 (Galaxy, Defiant, even the Centaur just got a paint job in the last weeks!), but I don't expect they'd be willing to spend that much effort on a non-canon ship that wasn't even end-game when it was released.

Actually I think the Luna is a special case as well. Like the Vesta, the Luna has only been seen in books, however I believe that its canon status is unique, like the Vesta. I think it was so well designed that it was accepted into canon. But again, we have the issue of it being from the books.

It was a nightmare for the devs to get permission to use the Vesta. They had already secured the Luna, as it was in game at launch. But it might be a while for the Luna, which I think is a bit of a favorite as well due to its more tactical lean and actually LOOKED like a Fed ship, unlike the DSSV Flying Shoe. I know I enjoyed flying her before I got a Vesta. Hell... I had plans to get a Fleet variant before getting a Vesta.

And the reason the Vesta was well recieved was because at the time she was the BEST science ship in the game. The variant I picked to fly had a layout similar to the Luna, which made the switch pretty easy. I still wouldn't say no to a T6 Luna though.

Oh I wouldn't say no to a T6 Luna either. I think they have a lot of neat possibilities for a 2410-era update to its look. It's just that, as you say, there are definitely hurdles when it comes to a non-canon ship, but by no means would I write off the possibility entirely.

Again, to the OP and anyone else worried about their favourite ship not coming to T6, the fact that an Enterprise class took 4 years to show up at T6 shows how slow the release schedule is. In fact, a slow release schedule was what players were demanding in 2014, iirc. People were deathly afraid that their current ships would be rendered useless when T6 was announced.

But Cryptic made two moves that worked in the long-term. First, they gave the existing end-game T5s the ability to upgrade to T6, meaning that no ships that were previously end-game capable were rendered obsolete. Second, making the aforementioned release schedule slow enough that players weren't bombarded with the temptation to replace all of their ships immediately.

Also, it needs to be pointed out that ships aren't just popped into T6 as-is. I believe most, if not all, T6 ships that replaced their lower-tier variants were given a 2410-era design option, and a lot of these are pretty detailed efforts. Take the Defiant, Ambassador, and Voyager for example - those are all based heavily on the original drafts for the ships for the shows and movies.

So it'll all take time. And I'm speaking as someone who counts their favourite ships as the Ambassador and the BoBW graveyard ships - and those are the ones that just appeared at T6 four years later

All that said, it's not that there's "no love" for the Luna. It just hasn't happened yet.

It's a little rough around the edges I admit. I haven't seen another ship from the artist who originally created her that I've really liked.

That being said, I like the overall saucer shape and the nacelle placement. She almost looks like a sister ship to the Akira in some ways, but with just a little bit of the Sovereign and Intrepid too.
I like a lot of the work the STO art team has been doing lately, if they can make versions of the Discovery ships that look good, I'm sure they can improve the Luna's flaws.

While I'd say the Nova and Oberth would be first. As I support both of those. I've also supported the luna as well. Here is where you can find ideas for all three.

I am okay with the nova...but other than ship, I have a hard stance of no fed ship until they start to at least bring some parity to other factions. And that is because the nova won a GD poll for the most wanted ship and they ignored it. Not that what I think or say matters mind you.

They're working on Rom and I think Dominion ships. Think they're aiming to get them out this year, it was in one of the live streams.

So...more than HALF A BLOODY YEAR...for what, ONE release of ships THIS YEAR? At this point, unless they have equal parity of ALL faction for at least 3 batches of ship release (or the rom and dom gets like 12 ships in one go)...yeah I am not gonna get ANY ships. Hell at this point I refuse to get ANYTHING PERIOD. Not even converting my stipend to dil or getting zen with dil. I am basically out. They went from wow they are doing well for a small dev team to try and keep all their fans happy to yeah a Korean grinder MMO can do a better job than they can for listening to their player base. Conversely, them putting foundry back will make me break the embargo on spending nothing...but not the getting new ships. Hell, I even stopped recommending this game. So they can do what they want or need to do...but whatever that is...I can no longer support. And some stupid token gesture of one ship release in a YEAR is not gonna do the job. Especially if they go the route of the copy and past bundles they normally do for their mega packs.

Pretty sure that it's been over a year since the last warbird came out(with the Miracle Worker warbirds). And the last Romulan faction ships came out...last year with the toilet scrubby brush ships?

I agree the Luna should get some love. I had previously proposed releasing it WITH a T6 Oberth and Nova. Nova would get pilot skill, Oberth would be miracle worker, and Luna would be Intel or Command.

I STILL fly a fleet Luna on one of my Alts. GREAT ship with the Tact console loadouts.

    Updated Luna, oh yes please.
I'd call a T6 Luna the Titan class after Will Riker's ship

Upgrade its lieutenant tactical seat to lieutenant commander and give it command spec on one of it's lieutenant commander seats.

Right...because dual command seating ships are the norm for T6 ships....

I think avoozuul is meaning to say that it should have to Lt.Cmdr seats, and one of them should have the Command Spec.

I think it probably also needs a Universal slot somewhere. Maybe the Lt.Cmdr. Science seat becomes Universal, the Lt. Tactical a Lt.Cmdr Tactical|Command. Of course, that would kinda be the best possible case. If they just turn one of the ENsign or Lt. seats into Universal seats, I think the Science seat must become a Specialization Hybrid seat, because otherwise all those science slots can easily feel redundant (as you have to work against all the shared cooldowns).

"Recon" Science Vessel kinda sounds like Intel, but we already have a few Intel seated Science ships in the C-Store, so I am in favor of something different. Command might do fine.

Oh yes, I love the Luna, but would like to see the Nova get some love first.

      Then Oberth, Luna.

Unless they give all three some love at the same time in a ship pack.
Now a LTS and loving it.

When I first started with the game the Luna was one of the ships that made it most feel like post-Nemesis. The Oddy and other unique designs had the big punch for the STO setting but the Luna gave subtle connection between works and time periods. I would dig a T6 version with model update.

Some of them are not even ON the list.

All of the canon ones are. And from last week's livestream, it sounds like the non-canon ones that are already in the game are likely on there too.

The Vesta trio (special case as they may be) got their T6 variants, so that does bode pretty well for the non-canon stuff. Especially the ones that Cryptic created themselves.
