why do people hate on this game?

i started playing like 3 months ago maybe more not sure its freaking fun and i get spok voice over for real and some other cool stuff sorry just was curiose and started watching some shows when i heard spok i was like whattttttt!!!!!!!!! when i was visiting planets i got chills game is awesome i might hate that console gets extra late but extra but im still like whatttttt!!!!!! game is awesome need to advertise more is all

    Multiple reasons. I will list some of them. And not in order of importance. I don't presume to speak for everyone though.
    1. Lack of PvP support. The game is really only balanced to around level 40ish.
    2. Tailor having goofy limits, such as certain races not being allowed some of the hairstyles, or one faction having an extremely limited color palette compared to the other factions.
    3. One faction having such a massive gaggle of ships and favoritism/support compared to the other factions. Likewise that same faction gaining access to great things that were at one point set for another faction, without giving equivalent value.
    4. The game is shutting down the ability to access user generated content(The Foundry) in just over a month.
    5. The lack of player agency when it comes to missions. You are led by the nose along rails for the stories. With removal of the Foundry, the universe is going to get even smaller.
    6. Many people don't like the writing or path of the stories for the game, others don't like a lot of the ships, or how Romulans haven't had a warbird released in over a year, for example. ST:D has been extremely polarizing.
    7. Ground combat is wonky and clunky. For example, using a bat'leth inflicts a self-imposed root on the person using it.
    8. Some players didn't appreciate when one of the high ranking devs was vocal about his disdain for one of the factions(KDF), and also his attitude regarding a group of players(PvPers).
    9. Various bugs with the game that continue to get neglected, swept under the rug, or kicked down the road.
    10. Lots of focus on selling gambleboxes, powercreep, and ships.
    11. I, as well as at least one other person, would have preferred if they monetized mission packs/mission arcs, and/or not retired the subscription options. Perhaps the studio might have a better stream of money coming in then.
    12. People also don't like how this is one of the few MMORPGs that is now unable to do day/night cycles.
    13. Lack of any meaningful endgame. It's all grind for resources and reputation marks, playing TFOs repeatedly, since there's no real meaningful gear drops in the game.
    14. The only real PvP in this game is "exchange PvP," "forum PvP," "politics PvP(in zone chat or some of the channels)," or "Space Barbie PvP."
    15. Equality of outcome in a lot of the game. No real failure conditions. For the most part, it's participation rewards handed out(I've heard people remark on Admiral participation pips, for example). Not much promotes competition or conflict between players. Competitive Wargames TFOs were stillborns on arrival pretty much. For the most part, it's pretty much just...A couple of TFOs at most, where getting first place really gives something(Crystal Catastrophe TFO offers bridge trophy and a couple of Very Rare quality items. I believe there's a ground one as well, perhaps? Or another space one...)?
    16. The game has become "Monty Haul" with resource generation.
    17. Power creep.
    18. Voice acting is okay. It's not like SWTOR's from when I played SWTOR(First six or so months, don't know what it's like now).
    19. Every time something new is introduced, there are 5+ things that break.
    20. The roleplaying/gaming community in game isn't always as nice, close, or helpful as the forum community.
    21. Old coding with nobody around from the past who can work with it, and it's a mess.


    Others are free to agree, disagree, or voice their issues with the game.

    Would I recommend the game nowadays to people? Not as fervently as I used to. But that's because I've come across many things that continue to deteriorate, or that I don't like, over the years I've played.

    Also, it may be a pet peeve of mine, but it would behoove you to try working on your post there. It was painfully aggravating to read. From the grammar and sentence structure, to punctuation.

    If people truly hated this game, they'd not play it and thus not care to comment about it. They hate on it because they like it and want the deficiencies corrected. People see what STOs potential could be, and are disappointed when that potential is unrealized year after year.

    I am one who sees a big potential not fully used.
    I am a romulan player that wants to see more warbirds!
    (I have federation characters because i am forced by the game to have them, otherwise i woul be a 100% romulan. I don't like federation, sorry. I am a huge fan of star trek evil guys romulans, cardassians...).

    I also agree a lot on these 2 points.
    I love this game, i just would like to see it in a better shape.

    ALSO: i still think that endgame open world map areas with random rewards, would be a great thing to add variety to the game.

    To be honest STO gave me the same chills (immersion) when I started playing so you're not alone. Pretty cool, eh? It still does.

    They hate because they care. They have or had hopes for the game, but the game does not accomplish what they want, for whatever reason. And some get resentful about it. Some takes things personal.

    I remember something that my co-worker once said about the process of finding a new car for his family together with his wife:
    "My wife knows there is no perfect car. But she takes it personal."

    I absolutely concur. Nearly all the issues listed are legitimate in my opinion but these particular ones vex me the most as well.

    The former IS the revenue stream and cheaper for ALOT of players. The latter DIDN'T work.....and you want to lock out content behind a limited income!? The current game is open to everyone Free and Paying customers. This encourages more sales than a subscription method does.

    I wouldn't say people hate this game, what I would say is some people take issue with how the game is run and developed and are more frustrated by Cryptic's and PWE's management of it and attitude towards its customers which ofc ends up getting returned.

    So much this. Games don't run on hopes and dreams. Whether aa player likes it or not the Cryptic devs needed a way to get people to give them money, and the old sub model wasn't profitable enough.

    The Romulan and Klingon factions deserve more attention from those who work for Cryptic, about that there can be little doubt. I actually prefer the story content when playing those factions far more than the Federation, with the exception of the TOS characters (even admittedly with a more truncated amount of content).

    Star Trek Online has all of the "bones" available to spread development resources between all of the factions thus far introduced, but the top heavy load of ships and stuff showered upon Starfleet in this game by the studio is ridiculous to say the least. Trolls will trot out the overly tired "well, players prefer Feds over everything else" argument, but how can they not ...... when that is predominantly what they are fed. I mean seriously Cryptic, are you gonna let your wee little toddlers always eat applesauce or at some point try to expand their palate with a more balanced diet?

    Do people dislike the game or do they dislike the development processes that ignores or bypasses QA when revamping or adding new things into the game?

    Do they dislike the rather singular approach to monetisation in the form of ships and gamble boxes?

    Or do they complain about the shoddy production values because they hope that doing so might get the folk responsible to up their game and put out something more than mediocre.

    Speaking personally, I typically have a short attention span for games.

    I tend to buy a game, usually on a steam sale, play it for anywhere from .5 to 20 hours and then toss it aside and look for the next game on sale. Most games fail to hold my attention and there are simply too many other options to keep wasting my gaming time playing something that I don't fully enjoy.

    That being the case, I have been playing STO pretty consistently since 2013. Obviously, they are doing something right. I won't sit here and tell anyone that STO is a 'perfect game,' it's absolutely not. Some things are done very well, others leave a lot to be desired but overall, I can't say that it's not a pretty good game.

    It's kept me playing for 6 years and still going strong, so they must be doing something right. It's not just the IP either, I am a bigger Star Wars fan then Star Trek (though Discovery is causing that to change) and I played SWTOR for about 6 weeks before I quit and never looked back.

    First of: Enjoy it. STO has a lot to enjoy. After a while you might notice a loose thread; and when you pull it it falls apart.

    Mostly this. Its not that big one thing; its a death of a thousand paper cuts thing which each of those have a different weighting depending on whom you ask.

    My biggest would be that they are faaaaaaar to eager to keep, re-introduce and completely ignore lots of annoying (but not game breaking of course) bugs. Doubles down if they affect premium stuff you bought and now stops doing what it supposed to do.

    Oh and all this timegating which creeped itself into the game on all fronts *shudders*

    And then there is the removal instead of fixing/expanding of exploration *sigh*

    Hate? No. I wouldn't play a game that I hated, anyway.

    It's just that there are many issues with STO, some of them having been in existence since years and never getting fixed. Some people are just more sensitive to it than others, with various degrees of legitimacy.

    Of course, the fact that Cryptic now wants to remove the Foundry from the game isn't going to improve things, far from it ! But, that's another story...

    As Katt Williams observed (before he went completely batTRIBBLE), haters are indeed gonna hate, and the number and quality of haters you have is an indicator of just how well you're doing. Nobody's hating on Everquest any more; it still exists, but it's utterly insignificant in terms of modern gaming. OTOH, go into the forums for, say, WoW, and you'll see a level of hatred for the game that makes one wonder sometimes how it's still the behemoth that it is.

    (DISCLAIMER: Don't actually go into the WoW forums. If you do, prepare a mental hazmat suit, because those folks make the DSC haters here look rational and calm.)

    So, people hate on this game because while it's not perfect (nothing is, and no two people's version of the "perfect game" will be the same), it is good, and it's doing well, which drives some people bugfrak insane for no reason I can clearly understand.

    One problem right off the bat is "hate" depends on the perspective of the person seeing it. To a delusional white knight, ANY criticism of the game is "hate". Of course, there is also "real" hate, which is equally delusional and dismisses the good things about a game.

    Rational people understand that criticism does not = hate, although criticism needs to be constructive. You shouldn't just criticize something, you should suggest how to fix the problem. And you should also realize that just because YOU think something is a problem doesn't mean other people do, so your personal pet peeve may never get fixed.

    Me personally? I've played the game since closed beta and enjoyed it the whole time. There are certain things I don't love, and there are certain decisions I haven't always agreed with, but STO is my "main" game because it's my favorite.

    People often have a vision of what makes a perfect game, even if they have no ability to make such a game themselves. And then those expectations get placed at the door of the game they're playing.

    I enjoy the game. It has problems, and I understand that, but they're not enough to cause me to stop playing the game. I do, often, find the monetization process of the game to be a bit of a hindrance (and a distraction), but I also understand they need money to make the game run. I wish, sometimes, they'd focus on a fun factor in conjunction with the money aspects so that some of the things we like (that don't make money) were a focus as well, instead of only focusing on the things that make them money. The foundry is a good example. It should have been something they supported with dedicated staff (even if it was one person) instead of being a function of whomever was available at the time (which was normally no one) so that the process continued. We still give them lots of money (I know I do), so having those fun features maintained might be enough to keep us playing the game (and spending money on the things that we're okay with, but not overly thrilled with).

    But, like I said, we all have our reasons for liking and complaining about the game. We all hope that our concerns are the ones addressed, but common sense says that it's not always going to be the case. When we're bothered enough, we leave. I've left a couple of times in the past, and recently returned ONLY because there's really nothing else on the horizon right now, and I love Star Trek. The less the game continues being Star Trek (no exploration whatsoever), the easier it becomes for me to jump ship on the next MMO that comes along.

    I think a lot of people are in that boat, and this comes from someone who is actually a fan of the game.

    A lot of the time people rant about stuff as if they hate it when in reality they don't. They simply wish certain things were improved.

    People preferring Fed has nothing to do with how much stuff Cryptic gives Federation players.

    People prefer Federation because every Star Trek show has been about the Federation, so it the thing the vast majority of people who play the game are used too, and are what they feel like defines Star Trek.

    Exactly. This isn't a "chicken or egg" scenario here. Trek is about the Federation, so that is what most people are going to play even if every faction had equal content.

    I like the game. However, there are issues I have with this game:
    1. Lack of focus on PVP balancing.
    Since the beginning of this game, PVP is an afterthought. Skewed heavily towards the Klingon faction and premade groups.
    Abilities are not balanced for both PVE and PVP based actions.
    2. Pay to win mechanic.
    Dilithium Ore should either have no limit or the limit raised for how much you can refine based on the type of sub you have.
    If you're monthly or lifetime you should have the ability to refine more than a FTP player. It would give more of an incentive
    to sub the game instead of a heavy focus on micro transactions. I wonder how much this game makes on micro transactions
    and if the numbers of subs. Unfortunately, Perfect World does not publish sub numbers or income on micro transactions.
    3. Faction specific favoritism.
    Even though T6 ships have the same traits, the ships are NOT balanced for each faction and lock box ships are even worse.
    Goes to my pay to win mechanic complaint. T6 ships you have to buy with Zen. Lock boxes can only be opened with keys
    you have to buy with Zen and the ship drop rate is EXTREMELY rare. I'm talking you're lucky if you get one ship if you spend
    $100 in keys.
    4. Ship design is screwed up.
    When you look at Federation ships, specifically their so called dreadnaughts and battlecruisers, they are dreadnaughts and
    battlecruisers in name only. They have the completely wrong weapon, console, and bridge officer configurations for ships
    that are supposed to be offensive in nature. Dreadnaughts should be bulkier versions of the battlecruisers. For a while, DPS
    was heavily favored towards the Romulan faction and there aren't too many Federation battlecruisers that have the 5/3
    weapon configuration that Romulan Scimitars have. Don't get me started with carrier design. Also, most of the ships that
    have optimal DPS design are lockbox ships. Thus, more focus on the pay to win mechanic. There should be C Store ships
    that you can buy that have similar configurations than the OP lockbox ships.

    That's just a few of the major issues with the game. Overall, I have fun and love the game. It is heavily skewed towards the pay to win gear and ships. Any player should be able to grind for gear that is comparable to the pay to win gear.

    This makes no sense.

    You call it 'pay to win' and then you give a big rant about how paying gets you nothing over Free 2 Play.

    Not a very consistent argument. And for the record, this game is in no way Pay2Win, the reason I have played as long as I have is because this is about the only game I have played where I can get top of the line everything without spending a dime.

    STO is the polar opposite of P2W.
