Priority One Podcast STO dev Interview information

vegeta50024vegeta50024 Member Posts: 2,335 Arc User
As some of you are probably aware, Cryptic Studios hosted last week Priority One at their office. The podcast was made available yesterday, and I took down as many notes from listening it as I possibly could. It was a 3 hour+ set of information that was delivered, so I wanted to break it up into a few posts. In this first post, I'll be posting the stuff that P1 discussed with Ambassador Kael, Al Rivera and the Art Director, Bill Yeatts.

In my opinion, this was probably the best possible info dump that we could get from Cryptic, outside of weekly tidbits of information. I am interested to see what you guys think of the information here.
----

- The big issue surrounding Windows Server, as I understand it, it's just a mess. There are many different versions and it's obviously hard to maintain compatibility since some versions have directX and some don't. They do plan to monitor the number of users who do log in via Windows Server and it's likely going to be a temporary restoration as they feel like Windows XP, Windows Server is just too unstable.

- The Foundry is unfortunately a low priority portion of the game for the time being. The reason is because the programmers whom work on it are usually the same ones whom are working on fixing other issues. It may take weeks for them to fix an issue plaguing the Foundry. Both Mike and Al usually try to push for the Foundry to get some higher priority, but there are just some things that need higher priority.

- On the subject of future playable factions/third allegiance, Cardassian and Borg remain possible factions to add. However, since there's a lot that goes into making a faction, there's likely not going to be another starting experience for a while. Adding a third distinct faction on the level of what we have with Federation and Klingons essentially isn't going to work because they don't want to further cause any more division of the playerbase. Starting experiences though are more likely to be done, but still very much time consuming.

- Romulan and Jem'hadar ships are coming sometime this year as they're on the schedule. As far as specific story content for them, they'd rather focus in on stories that everyone can play as a whole, rather than creating content for a small portion of the playerbase.

- Don't expect them to ever drop the 2 faction system as far as teaming goes. Since the game was designed over a 2 faction system to emulate World of Warcraft, the game's coding would have to be ripped out just to allow teaming and its just not something they will do anytime soon. They want to make it happen though.

- STO 2/2.0 is a bigger discussion than doing something like a Reputation revamp, the latter which they want to try and accomplish at some point. When they did get to talk about STO 2, they honestly just don't want to shut the game down and start over. They feel that STO, 9 years now into its life, is going just too strong to shut down. That's why they try to incorporate as many quality of life features as time allows them to.

- There was an episode remaster planned for this month, but got put off because they didn't have all of the writers available (Ryon had another baby born in his family).

- UI is something that they want to overhaul in order to improve the ease of use as well as fix performance issues.

- When it comes to the recent Discovery story shift, we saw that they changed the way they do their episode arcs. With a currently running Star Trek series, they have an idea of where they want to take the current 2 arcs they have. Season 17 (which I believe is Age of Discovery Part 3), they are gonna bring 2 more episodes that will be the episodes that get inserted into Age of Discovery and become part of the Discovery character's leveling experience. Other series may also tie in like Section 31.

- The goal is to eventually get to a point that if you see something in the TV series, it'll come to STO in the not too distance future.

- Challenge player feature, which has been broken for quite some time, is planned to be fixed, but no ETA on it.

- Bridge officer Promotion to Captain apparently almost made it into VIL. They say that the ability to start a character at level 60 is a step in that direction.

- Inventory slot increases beyond what we currently have is mainly a database issue and not mainly because the devs do not want to do it. This is why they charge for inventory slots.

- Making GPL more useful is something they do want to do.

- No current solutions for TFO leaver penalties. Hard to design a system that won't be exploited by leavers.

- No current plans for Temporal Recruitment or any other Recruitment events on the schedule.

- They have plans on converting all T6 ships eventually to be scaling ships. There is no timetable on this.

Know you have more info coming but I did want to comment on this one (well all of them) but this one the most.

Server 2003 and WinXP have been out of support for 3 years by Microsoft. Win7 falls out of support next Jan, and will not be extended like they had done with WinXP for it's end of life. Suffice it to say, for the Dev's, they should not be supporting end of life OS's for client side, and i hope like hell they aren't using it as part of their internal infrastructure. There are too many security holes in them that have not, and will not be fixed. It's a security risk no one should be taking in this day and age. To put a bit of perspective on it, Server 2019 has already been released and is no longer in beta but as a full product. Hopefully their DB isn't running on something antiquated either.

The short of it, people need to upgrade their systems if they are that old. I hold out as long as I can, but there's a time you got to move your systems up to keep playing the games you love. Sadly there's just no way around it if you want to ensure things are secure like they need to be.

I don't see them upping the system requirements again for STO anytime soon. Frankly... the current requirements are fine. And not everyone CAN afford to upgrade immediately anyways.
    - Making GPL more useful is something they do want to do.

Would be nice to finally have something to do with our mountains of GPL.

    don't think any one will be interested in this but this year it's the 10th anniversary of the star trek 2009 movie so there could be a possible kelvin timeline faction coming soon just saying ^^;

it's possible but more likely is a special giveaway of some sort.

This is probably not very important for most long-term players, but it might be of particular interest for newbies - and "starting tips" as well.

Currently, I would always recommend new players against spending any money on the C-Store - they don't know if they'll actually like the game, and they don't know what they really need or enjoy later until they actually played some time, the level-up ships are all temporary fun that you throw away, and the Tier 6 ships are only relevant at endgame.
But maybe one could instead recomend them some of the "staple" suggestions then - like the Arbiter bundle. They would be able to use the ship from the start and grow with it.

They stated that they have no plans for another starting experience anytime in the near future. Discovery is their current focus at least through May.

I can see potentially a rerelease of the Kelvin Admiral uniform for the aniversary, or maybe either the dress or cadet uniforms. While I wouldn't mind a playable USS Kelvin and the Kelvin D-7, those are more likely to be in a lockbox. And if this merger between CBS and Paramount goes through... all of Star Trek will be under one roof again. Which means... we just might get more Kelvin stuff in STO.

So here's the last of what I have that I took notes on regarding the Ship design and the Content design portion of the Priority One Podcast.

    Ship Design

    - On the topic of Fewer canon ships left, the ship artists mentioned that they like having design cues to go off of, whether it's something seen in the Kelvin Timeline movies, or if its a Discovery ship.

    - Donny mentions that compared to Environment design where they can spend 6 weeks doing many different things there, in ship design, you spend 2-3 weeks focused in on just the ship.

    - Each person on the team gets one ship to work on, unless someone happens to be called on for anothr project or goes on leave, then someone else will pick up that ship. Of particular note is that they do not do any special effects with the ships, just model of it.

    - The T'Pau Scout Ship was Donny's first ship since joining the team 5 months ago.

    - When it comes to the closer partnership when it comes to designing the Discovery content for the game, the STO devs did not get any input as far as ship deisgns, but they would love to talk to them about collaboration.

    - Going back to the topic of ship design, while they do like working on the new Discovery ships and bringing them out, they also remember that they still have other ship designs that they still would like to see go to endgame. It's just a matter of them finding the time to do them (like for example, many touch ups to canon ships were done in spare time).

    - Klingon ships in general are harder to design because they have a general feel to them and they cannot deviate too much before they start looking either like Romulan ships or other IP ships.

    Content Design and TFO Discussion

    - John Hegner while new to Star Trek Online, isn't new to the studio as he used to work on City of Heroes.

    - When doing the writing, Memory Alpha is one of their biggest sources to recalling episodes names so that they can watch an episode that they want to draw inspiration from.

    - They try to respect canon as much as possible, since every series has a slightly different take on aliens such as Discovery vs. TOS with the Klingons. Since they are 31 years after Nemesis, they also want to introduce their own species such as the Lukari into the game in order to make their mark on the Star Trek universe.

-John notes that writing for Star Trek Online is probably the closest one could get to writing for the actual series.

    - When comes to Age of Discovery, as we've already seen, they are in communication with the Discovery writers, but they also communicate with CBS too. They took ideas of what they wanted to do in the game and what they were able to do, and they got the feedback of what they could focus on. This collaboration goes two ways as the STO writers might bring something interesting that the Discovery writers didn't think of before.

    - There is going to be more stuff to come with J'Ula, as they don't just add characters for the sake of being able to add them.

    - While Discovery is currently the focus of the STO, there will be a point that they will end it and move onto something else. All the new Star Trek shows in the works like the Picard series will potentially make their way into STO if they see it's doing well and there's stuff they can use from it.

    - They spent some time talking about the next Featured TFO, Pahvo Dissension. It's going to be similar in nature to the 2nd episode with Captain Killy, can be done if you do a 2-2-1 split.

That's a strange statement, because it applies just as much to Fed ships as Klingon ships. With very few exceptions like the Defiant, all Fed ships have a very similar "feel". Not sure how that is more of an obstacle for Klingons than for Feds.

Thanks for all of the great notes though!

It sounds like they were only talking about client support, not their own servers. Some people use Windows Server as a deskop client because they could get it free or cheap.

It's possible their server CPUs and DBs use Windows, but most companies use Linux servers for customer-facing applications. Most Microsoft server use is for intranet / corporate in-house use. Compare pricing for Windows vs. Linux servers at hosting companies and Amazon Web Services for one reason why.

To clarify further, they ware talking about how most Klingon designs are designed to resemble the shape of a T. Look at everything we have in this game that is strictly Klingon, and not Discovery or alien. Every Klingon ship Cryptic has made has more or less stuck to the same canon design choices.

Starfleet ships have so many different designs, but usually have some sort of Saucer and Nacelle pattern to them, with some exceptions (Pilot Escorts, Jupiter come to mind). Starfleet ships just have more flexibility.

I'm aware of the cost differences, i work for a hosting provider (MSP).

My point still stands though, they should not be trying to support clients using an OS that has not been supported for an extended period of time. It's just bad juju to do so. I mean this isnt talking about replacing something just a few years old, this is talking about OS's that are almost 2 decades old. The time and effort could be spent else where, is all i am saying.

As to the Klingon designs, they have expanded beyond just those, so hopefully there is more for them to look at as well. Gorn, Orion, & Ferasan have only been lightly touched on so far. So while not necessarily Klingon, the Klingon faction still has plenty left in it i think.

I agree. It's a waste of developer resources to do QA before release and support after release for dead OSs that should no longer be connecting to the internet.

At work we finally dropped support for XP and Vista in mid-2017, and it was a relief to not have to deal with support tickets on some difference in behavior with them compared to 7 and 10. Having to fire up an XP VM just to try replicating or fixing a bug report that affected only a tiny number of customers was an annoying waste of time.

While the Lukari are a new species. The idea behind them however is not. The use of protomatter for terraforming actually comes from Project Genesis. Which was in The Wrath of Khan and carried over to The Search for Spock.

    https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Project_Genesis

So while they did make a new species for it, they also tied it to something from two movies from the TOS era. Which means that in the future, any new species they introduce will be the same.

It's one of the things I ran into when actually taking the time to create an alien species. When you're actually looking to make it fit withing the Star Trek universe, it's a very daunting task. Especially for STO, where you also have to consider game mechanics. However, without the game mechanics, it is still daunting. It's easy to create an alien Mary Sue/God mode character, especially if it's taken from a different game universe. But to create a Star Trek only species there are many things one has to keep in mind.

Species - How the Species came about, societal structure, history, language, language structure, etc.
Planet - What type of planet do they live on? How many moons does it have, and of what type? Can include named flora and fauna.
System - What type of system is the planet in? How many planets? What type of Star? Any other astrological bodies?
Location - Where in the sectors would it fit best?

As I mentioned, you can take a species from other game universe, I've personally seen Halo, Warhammer, D&D, Yugi'oh, Anime, and a few others I can't recall. Where they just lifted a species from that game universe and dropped it in STO. The next to eaisest path to creating an alien. Everything is there, you just have to make it fit within the confines of the universe, which, some just don't try to.

The easiest path to making an alien in STO, is to make it for appearance only, and nothing more.

For Star Trek though, history and language are the two biggest problems. With the Lukari, Cryptic didn't even think of the language barrier, they just assumed the Universal Translator already knew how to translate the language, which is a time saver on their part. Though, they didn't include a whole lot of history with them in game either.

But just the creation as they did it, still takes weeks of research. I'm in the process of doing this for one of my alien species. I just have to remember to write more of it down, so it's all not just beating around in my head.

So while I like the fact they're trying to introduce new aliens. I don't foresee it as something that's going to happen that often. Especially, since they do try to tie it to something from ingame or in the lore to tie it to, and have it make sense.

You're right, we do not see them do it often.

The last time they created another species specific to the game, they introduced the Deferi. However, the Deferi in my opinion were not the most interesting aliens we've seen in the game. The Lukari were introduced to us first as a species that we thought were just on the brink of warp travel, but we later find out that they did have some kind of space travel before.

Also the Lukari were better developed than the Deferi.

Agreed. I don't know of very many players who would cry if the Deferi were wiped out.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

The Deferi were just... bland. The concept is interesting, but the execution is where it falls off.
A species that believes in Balance in all things... interesting concept. But to believe in it SO hard that they're willing to get wiped out by the Borg if it means maintaining The Balance... that's almost self destructive. And most of the Deferi seem to have kinda monotone voices. Only one I can think of that actually HAS a personality is the one we meet on the Liesset in the Delta Arc.

If every ship seen will find its way ingame sometime I might rekindle my hope of getting the NV or NC classes from ENT, the Newton type from 09, and the Norway from FC. Other than the Cardenas (which I know is coming) they're the only canon ships I particularly want.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Not every ship will find its way into the game that you might want.

    - NV and NC, are there alternate names for these two ship classes, because I can't find them in Memory Alpha. I do find a ship called Intrepid type though.

    - Newtwon and anything from Kelvin Timeline would have to be licensed out to use, and would likely be restricted a Lobi or lock box ship.

    - Cardenas class WILL find its way into the game.
    - Norway class might come into the game if they want to include it and have time in the schedule.

NV is the Intrepid type and NC is the Sarajevo type (NC comes from the concept art and I'm not sure where NV comes from but most references to it I've found call it that) and I don't care if the Newton is Lobi because it'll end up on the exchange.
