My engineer had leveled 3 times and the ship has only gone tier 1 to tier 2 and about 1/5 to tier 3.. and it's almost all been in space stuff.

That's because most of the content these days consist of timed waves of respawning enemies, which give 0 XP.

Your engineer can level easily with XP from DOff missions, Admiralty, episode mission rewards etc. Your ship only levels from the XP earned when you kill XP-earning target ships with it.

As Warpangel pointed out, Cryptic has been increasingly making missions and events have non-XP earning waves of enemies that you have to kill, and they can kill you, and they are as tough as regular NPCs... but they give 0 XP.

You may also be running content where the full XP granted to your captain is much higher than ship XP earned from space battles during the run.

Funny how patrols were removed for being subpar and yet Argala patrol, 4/5, rinse & repeat is the best option for levelling ships because they've gone out of their way to prevent the new content from giving ship XP.

Disco arc missions only give their XP from completion of the mission, zero from ground or space. Strange move in a genre that revolves around gaining XP and makes me wonder what they have planned for the store.

I have to agree... I was able to connect to the game again after serious effort to overcome blocks on Cryptic's side as well as the government side here and set about trying to get up to date on things in time for the 9th Anniversary event purchasing the Vanguard update and other things dropping several hundred dollars actually. So imagine my surprise after getting caught up on the missions to see my captain had not maxed out tiers. It was astonishing to say the least. Consequently it was off to Argala for a couple hours to level up several ships on different toons. For what it is worth, I fully expect it to be hit hard with the nerf bat soon. I'm amazed it has not done already frankly speaking.

Yup, and don't forget to set your difficulty to Medium, for a bit more XP.
Or run w/ a group, I believe more mobs spawn the more players there are. But not sure if the XP is divided or if everyone gets full XP for each ship.

The trouble with Starship Mastery is Cryptic don't seem to understand that Players want the trait immediately to supplement their build. All they have done since this mechanic was introduced is nerf nerf and nerf xp and the places we can go to level the ship.

    1. Romulan Patrols had XP cut
    2. Tholian Red Alert had XP cut to the point where playing it for anything other than the daily mark box was all it became good for. Before it was nerfed I could level a ship in 2 runs of that map.
    3. Borg Red Alerts had XP cut
    4. Red Alerts have become a weekend event cutting off access to any farming of XP there, not that it matters with the XP cut's
    5. Not enough TFO's offer XP to level a ship. You could not level a ship by playing Gre'thor/Procyon V/Tzenkethi Front/Gravity Kills ect without it taking weeks running anything outside of Borg or Starbase 1.
    6. Undine Battlezone is a joke if you try to level a ship there.
    7. Terran is slightly better but again will take a very long time.
    8. Having TFO's with lots of NPC's but awarding no XP for kills, an example is the middle part of Gre'thor where you escort transports to the surface lots of Hearld ships spawn but if you engage them which I tend not to because A. Don't want the aggro and be stuck in red alert and slow me down getting to portals B. They offer no XP thus no benefit to kill only for more to respawn.

TBH locking the trait behind a levelling process is in my opinion a dumb idea. Esp when they don't provide content with enough XP to level the ship and shoehorned you into a system patrol to get it.

Always they need to do what has been done with the Dominion/Cardassian C-Store ships and that is unlocking the trait for the account not the character.

Has put me off numerous times creating a new character knowing I have to farm the SSM trait again on that character and only viable place to get it done with the less pain is Argala on Advanced.

Hello rubber banding my old friend, time to bounce around the battlezone again, where are all my bug reports going?, out of love with this game I am falling, As Cryptic fail to acknowledge a problem exists, Shakes an angry fist, And from Support all I'm hearing are the sounds of silence.

The leveling process is an excellent idea that would be a great reason to play...if they hadn't arranged the XP situation such that the most effective way to do it is exploity spamgrinding of 4/5ths of one patrol mission.

They understand players want that, that's just completely counter to the whole point of the traits, so they don't give into it.

So they made a point against what players want there. ;)

    As for the OP:

I don’t think it takes longer than before it just remains highly dependent on what you do. Some PvE like SB1 or UAA pay out well, others almost nothing at all. Patrols work fine.

Mastery XP grind remains an annoying activity on a toon to toon basis and its natural that it pisses peeps off when they are forced to tend to ships they dislike just to get a trait out of em. The dude who came up with the concept was surely one bright guy.

One of the perks from the personal endeavour system could have been an XP boost, 1% per pip up to max of 10 would barely dent the spec point grind but would be a nice gesture in terms of the ship mastery grind.

They could even have split it into two, one for ground and the other for space, although given the farcical average of 2xp per head on ground any increase would be pretty worthless.

Consipracy theorists no doubt spotted that the changes to xp boosters in the store came along within a suspiciously close window to the xp reductions arrival.

I suspect that Cryptic is thinking that eventually all new ships would have a mandatory Level 6 Ship Mastery would be Account-Wide Unlock.
Meaning that when you buy the ship from C-Store, only your faction can use it.

eg: Jem'Hadar ships had Level 6 Ship Mastery would be Account-Wide Unlock.
Meaning that your Fed character cannot use it, until that particular Jem'Hadar ship reaches Level 6 Ship Master.
And this is just for one (1) Jem'Hadar type of ship! Pity those who bought that BIG Gamma Vanguard Pack!

That's why I refuse to buy any ship that has this restriction of Level 6 Ship Mastery would be Account-Wide Unlock.
Vote with your wallet, and hope Cryptic will listen.

On exotic/kinetic builds I see lots of players run with checkmate.

At the end of the day it always boils down to what alternatives one has access too but for those kinds of builds there aren’t that many so +30% dmg increase is often taken.

I run the mission "Ragnarok". From zero ship experience to full Tier 5 usually takes 3 - 4 runs. The ships leading up to getting to the Ent J don't give you much, but the mobs AFTER that (waiting for Scotty to deply the Thox Utat), are heavy for XP.

Just an FYI, after the Ent J fires the Thox thingi and 'The Expanse' is gone, just drop the mission and restart. Chasing down the few remaining ships and attacking Noye in the Annorax nets zero XP.

So not the quickest, but since I've done it so much, I can run the mission in ten minutes, so within 30-45 get full tier 5 on a new ship.
