Whats with the Overflow Bag Change?

thevampinatorthevampinator Member Posts: 637 Arc User
This is a ridiculous change, there is no need for it at all. Please revert it. I sometimes have a lot of items in overflow, from queues saving it all up. So I can sell it later. There is no need to restrict people from buying when they have items in overflow not one. If this is an attempt to force players to buy more inventory slots its not going to work. I see no point in buying inventory slots for the same reason I won't buy bridge officer slots or ship slots because I won't buy them period unless its some part of an account wide unlock. So If this was the reason why this change was added it really should be reverted. Sometimes there is this bug that prevents the ui for overflow bag from opening forcing one to relaunch the game in order to get all the items from the overflow bag so this is another inconvenience. What are your thoughts? Do you think it was a misguided move and should it be reverted?

Yeah... you're not supposed to store things in overflow.... Personally I think they should have fixed this by making the overflow bag automatically spit things into your inventory.

They did a overflow bag change before and reverted it. I am hoping they will revert it again.

What you're doing with the overflow bag is exactly why they changed it. We're limited in inventory for reasons - some commercial and some logistical.

So you've been using your bag as free inventory slots instead of supporting the game?

No sympathy from me. Pay up or live without.

Well basically not as free inventory as I do move stuff over when inventory is cleared out a lot of the time. Don't always have a merchant to sell too so I leave all the stuff in the overflow till inventory is cleared out then take that stuff out and sell the items to one of the merchants that give half the ec value of the items being sold. You are also talking to someone who has spent hundreds possibly over four hundred or more in the game already. On Ships, Outfits, Keys, character slots, Outfit Slots and other things not to mention the hundreds I've spent in Neverwinter and also the hundred or so or more I spent in Champions Online. Over the many years I've played Cryptic Mmos. So I think they should keep it the same with the overflow bag and revert it because they get millions or even billions from gambling mechanics and by how much money they get for all the other things. So yeah not supporting the inventory slots bridge officer slots and ship slots by buying them is a personal choice as its a waste of money. The only way I am willing to do so is if they are account wide. I will buy non account wide outfits and ships though if I want them for a character. As those are worth the money. Even if they removed the overflow bag itself I won't spend money on the inventory slots Unless all my characters benefit and not just one. This is just how I feel about it and I'm sure other players might feel the same.

The overflow bag punishments seem weird to me. Lots of games have a temporary storage like that, and the standard way to prevent players from keeping stuff there permanently is to have the system simply delete items left to rot in there after a set time.

The overflow bag is there to protect you. It's there so if you receive a critical item like a mission reward and you don't have room in your inventory, you don't lose it. It's there so you have a chance to go and clear your inventory and retrieve the items.

It is not designed to be free storage and that is exactly why it was changed. If you're out of inventory space and away from a merchant, salvage some items, discard some junk, use the Azura Comm, there are plenty of options available.

The change makes perfect sense to me. You simply need to do a better job managing your inventory, if you make a habit of carrying many things around.. then maybe those things are better off in your bank. If your problem is buying bank space that isn't 'per account,' I share that objection but I doubt it will be changed. I have one character that have maxed out bank space on and I transfer account bound items to him for storage. That is how I got my 'account wide' increase.

It's not perfect, but it's your only option. Since Cryptic decided to bait and switch the Elite Starter Pack, it's the only option you have.

No it should not be reverted. The Overflow is a temporary storage area so you don't lose items DURING A SINGLE MISSION. Go visit a Ferengi Bartender to sell things, either on Drozana or your Fleet Starbase. All you are doing is exploiting this temporary measure. Database space is a premium, and it's cheap as chips to buy slots!!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Ostensibly, yes. However, there are very few mission rewards that are spontaneously given to you, as opposed to being in a mission reward contact where it would happily stay until you had room to pick it up. In fact, it wasn't that long ago it was impossible to put those rewards in the overflow, you had to make room in inventory to claim them. The only mission rewards that are given directly are from queues, which wouldn't even go into the inventory if not for the frivolous clickybox packaging.

Before they made it possible to intentionally claim mission rewards, rep projects, and, oh would'ya look at that, open boxes into the overflow, there wasn't much chance to store things in there at all. All you got there were the occasional mark/R&D material box to open, and N&G vendor trash to discard, that was it.

So yeah, I say the overflow is there to let you open more lockboxes faster. :D

I can see the frustration from the point of view of someone who has been using their Overflow space as "convenient bottomless storage space until I really need something out of it".

However from a game and business point of view, that is simply not a sensible way to run things. It opens up a fair number of potential abuses/exploits/problems, as well as creating a need for unusually variable memory requirements. We've had reports from people in the past who stored literally thousands of items in their overflow bag.

Cryptic actually gives you quite a bit of storage space, and frequently has sales and specials and giveaways where you can acquire more. Making the Overflow bag limited is not a way to 'force you to buy more space', it's a way to make an overflow bag work in a reasonable manner. To protect the player from the occasional "whoops my inv filled up just as that juicy item dropped", not to give them infinite free storage space.

Another issue is, if a player finds it difficult or bothersome to clean out his inventory and make room on a semi-regular basis, and starts using Overflow as a way to 'just stuff things in there til I feel like cleaning it out'... they are just compounding the issue to make an even bigger problem later.

If you don't want to pay for more inventory space, or grind dil to trade for Zen to buy more, or purchase items like the Elite Starter pack (when it was available) to increase storage space, well that's your choice. If you don't buy space, you are choosing to keep fewer items and less junk in your inventory. That's what vendors, the Exchange, Salvage Item, and Recycle are for.

As an aside, very few games give you the option to discard your excess items on the fly for either credit or upgrade materials. Cryptic gives both. There's not really a lot of room here for a valid complaint.

I would be happy with them removing the overflow bag entirely. I wanted to claim a ship the other day but it wouldn't let me because I had something in overflow. I didn't even know what the overflow bag was, and had to ask for help in chat to find it.

Come to find out, there was a piece of garbage in there I didn't want, have no clue how it got in there, and I had to throw some garbage away before I could claim my ship.

Why??? Just get rid of it. If you need more inventory slots - buy more inventory slots!

I was pissed off at the new episode I played yesterday. After beating up Tilly on the psionic planet it makes you pick up a crate full of useless garbage to finish the mission. So I picked up the garbage, threw it away, and beamed up.

Completing daily rep assignments also gives you a box of ground equipment garbage. I notice you can re-engineer the useless garbage with salvage, but you can't turn the useless garbage into salvage. Why???

So every day, I do my daily reps, get the boxes of garbage I don't want, and throw the garbage away.

Especially since they were giving out free Inventory and Bank Slots for a Character.

Because they gave you the Rep stuff for 'free'.

Another point: the inventory limit is also a protection measure for Cryptic to restrict the amount of data they have to handle per character. Using the overflow bag as free inventory circumvents that. Ergo: nerf. Players side, it might be a convenience tool for which one can say "But where's the harm?!" but behind the scenes there could be more going on with significant costs. For example. further constraining how much more Cryptic can do with expanded inventory capacity (see. requests for pet tabs. That's harder to build in and manage, data side, if players are already pushing beyond design limits.)

I get WHY they made this change: BUY MORE SLOTS!

It is just irritating to have to deal with all of those pets I had stashed in there. Give us a pet tab or turn the pets into clickable abilities once unlocked, I want my pets, but not at the expense of them taking up inventory/bank slots. That's why, previously, I only pulled out the pets I like to use.

I am not sure why they haven't turned pets into abilities by now. Other games I play do this and even a few started off as having to be kept in your inventory (SWTOR).

I can't imagine it would be that difficult to implement (since it's been done) and it is a simple QoL improvement that would probably only make people happy and not upset anyone.

I think that would be a more detrimental change than this. If items in overflow deleted after a time, players would likely lose things rather than just not being able to buy from a store.

What they need to do now is make it clearer to the player that a) there are items in overflow to be retrieved and b) this is the reason you can't buy from the store. Oh, and fixing the issue where you can't open overflow without using /lootcancel wouldn't be a bad thing either.
