Why aren't you allowed to give new starships, a 'shakedown' cruise?

When you are assigned a new Starship upon promotion, or you 'buy', a new ship that catches your eye, in the "C-STORE". For some reason, it is assumed that the ship is "good to go". And if things don't work out, with the ship. Wellll, that's the fault of the user, isn't it?

The UNITED(?) STATES NAVY, as has pretty much EVERY SEAFARING NATION on this planet, that has built, and deployed ships to sea, be they 'MERCHANT', or 'NAVAL', gives a ship that they've built, a SHAKEDOWN.

A shakedown crruise, isn't just about finding 'flaws'. It's also a "get aquainted" period for the new 'master' of that ship. It's supposed to let that Captain know just what his(her), new ship will do, when (s)he, needs it to. For Captain and ship, to become one, as it were.

Why does it seem that Star Trek ONLINE, has this presumption that everyone that come into the program, is just a 'natural' Starship commander, no matter WHAT SHIP they're assigned?

    There used to be something like a shakedown mission when getting a new ship on KDF side, don't remember anymore if Fed had the same. But that's a veeery long time ago, I reckon it wasn't too popular hence the removal perhaps.

    I remember what you are referring. That was not a shakedown cruise per se for the KDF. It was, I believe, a sly attempt to provide content for the KDF, since they had little compared to the FED side. When non-faction specific missions became a thing those throw away missions were removed. Also, I would not have called those shakedown cruises, because you were never able to return the ship if you did not like it. All you could do was return to the ship vendor and purchase a new ship, for EC, or Zen.

    we still have it copy the ships to tribble and use them with best gear !! (this is a option for single char unlock ships)

    Players were not buying them on Holodeck. Continue to play on Tribble...forever. So, that is why it is gone.

    The other game made in literally the same engine is Champions Online. In Champions every major social hub has a portal to "The Armory" - an area where you can change your characters build at no cost and engage in combat against combat dummies.

    Once you were sure you had picked the right skills, gear etc. you would exit the Armor and pay the cost for the reset / anything you purchased. The STO shipyard just needs the same thing: The ability for players to go to an area, reset their build, try out things, and only pay the costs on exit if they confirm the purchase(s) made.

    lol, the 'shakedown' cruise of C-store ships used to be the ability to buy C-store ships on Tribble server with a copy of your Zen. Cryptic didn't like that cause it let people try a ship, then decide it wasn't worth the price and not buy it for real.

    It doesn't matter if you were able to Test Drive. If it seems OP now, give it a few weeks to a couple of months and that Console and/or Trait will be 're-educated' to perform less so.

    Champions doesn't work like that. Not in any meaningful way.

    You go into the powerhouse, not the armory, but if you want to change powers you have to pay up front to remove what you have already.

    Once you do that then you can keep on rearranging things, buying and removing powers for free, but once you leave the powerhouse, once you re-enter the proper game where you can get on with missions and such, those powers are locked in and if you want to change them then you have to go back to the powerhouse and pay again.

    Now, regarding shakedown cruises... Those are for new ships and ships that have just come from having major work done in the yards.
    It's not for the benefit of the captain or crew. It's to make sure that the work was done properly.

    So first you have to assume that the ship that you are getting is either brand new or that it has just come off of having extensive work done on it.

    If an officer is just given command of an existing ship there is no shakedown cruise, and it's more than a little conceited to think that Starfleet is making brand new ships just for your captain.

    As far as testing ships goes? During the leveling experience it's not that big a deal. It really isn't.

    Oh, sure, it's possible that you thought that you would test out a cruiser and think it akin to flying a brick, or you try out an escort and feel like you have no armor or shields to protect you, but in a few levels you will be getting a new ship so just ride it out.

    Those are the times that players should be experimenting, anyway. I would recommend that every new captain pick at least one cruiser, one escort, and one science ship to fly around in while leveling so that they are better prepared to make an informed decision at the end, and especially when it comes to buying ships from the C-store, as to what type of ship(s) they prefer.

    The actual ship specs aren't secret. You can see what they are and how each of the ships you can get stack up against one another.
    If you are worried about "getting stuck" with a "bad" ship then do a little research beforehand.
