Its coming up on that time of year again everyone,
Winter Event is coming, and with it
The Fastest Game on Ice! This year the DS9 Lock Box provided the game with an exciting new trait,
[Genetic Resequencer - Ground Trait: Maquis Guile], to help us complete the race and other run-centric tasks even Fastester with its passive +10% Run Speed boost!
Everyone is encouraged to selflessly share their Winter Wonderland experience and wisdom with others, in the spirit of community, for the betterment of your fellow players! There is much more to Winter Wonderland than just the ship race, feel free to share tips for other aspects of Winter Wonderland as well!
My contribution to the topic of Winter Wonderland Tips and Tricks is my personal route for
Fastest Game on Ice:
Personally, I prefer to slide/drift, since it can be done entirely with the mouse! How cool is that?! I have marked the entire route and highlighted the areas of sliding or drifting, though hopping or rolling will work just fine at those spots.
There are a lot of ways to manage the key mechanic of
Fastest Game on Ice, the
inertia mechanic. You can initiate a slide by substantially changing your heading (the slide duration and distance is based on the ground slope and your angle of attack). You can also bunny hop during slides to reduce its duration, or even stop the inertia completely by doing a full running jump and letting go of the movement keys during the jump, or by rolling. There is no single "best way" to manage this mechanic, try them all, find out which works best for you and most importantly have
FUN!
On the matter of accumulating large amounts of winter commodities, I'd recommend simply buying them off of the exchange after Winter Event has been going for a little while. They tend to be incredibly cheap after Winter Event begins, less than 1k per winter thingy. It just seems more sensible to pay someone else a tiny amount of EC to expend a large amount of their time farming them, rather than consuming your own valuable time.
Merry Christmas, and
happy holidays -- I'll see you out in Q's Winter Wonderland!

Also... you're REAL early. We still got at least 2 weeks before the Winter Event.
Also, good point on cost of winter commodities - I'm not sure it makes sense to grind them out if the price on exchange gets so low, probably is best to just buy direct
Called usurping. And he/she is doing it 2 weeks in advance to beat you to the punch. LOL!
Basically, any thread you start now, will just be a mergeable event. You don't remember this from last year?
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -- Benjamin Franklin
But yeah - I used to do the "dive-roll at corners" thing, but the last year or two I figured I could just sprint/drift through them.
As for commodities... if you have a bunch of alts, it's easy to just farm the heck out of them with DOFF missions. I barely touched the events for ornaments the last few times, and I ended up tossing extras & just keeping ~ 3 stacks of each type (1500?). Of course, some of that's likely carryover from earlier years.
THIS early... intent is pretty clear.
By the end of my runs I can almost lap the person ahead of me. And back before it was an account unlock, I had to run it on all 7 toons. Which sucked alot. After so many runs it felt like I could run it blindfolded.
And if you get in trouble. Point the right direction, double tap W and do a roll. It stops the sliding for a bit so you can readjust.
I've always treated the race as a Rally course as I love Rally Driving and other racing games. I never saw the point in 'rolling'.
Yeah, with two weeks out this thread (as helpful as the resources may be, though for a demonstration vid you should really have your chat box minimized OP) may well wind up on page 2 or 3 by the time of the event. Thus, it has the potential to set up another drama with a miscellaneous user posting winter event tips of their own (not seeing an extant thread that hasn't yet graduated to necro territory) and being reported and merged with this (glad Rattler saw it) and simply because this thread was posted so early this year (which isn't terribly productive, with this kind of practical material and no immediate context to apply it the retention rate is likely to be low. For context, I work in education. 1 week is the earliest I'd recommend folks start reviewing for a single exercise in STO, though night before would work just fine.)
Just...try to play it cool people. "Everyone is encouraged to selflessly share their Winter Wonderland experience and wisdom with others," isn't helped when there's a component of self-interest in how that wisdom was posted. As should have been the lesson from last year, it really doesn't matter who gets the headlining spot on a PSA.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the power slide method on principle for newbies. It can be effective but more as a "next step" after you've learned the jump-to-cancel-momentum technique (an easy save for newbies learning the track for the first time. Also opens up the straights Rattler shows in their annual thread.)
Notable missions: Apex [AEI], Gemini [SSF], Trident [AEI], Evolution's Smile [SSF], Transcendence
Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
Almost certainly will not. Hasn't been since 2015.
