My Take on Age of Disco

blargskullblargskull Member Posts: 98 Arc User
I just got around to updating my STO account and gave the Age of Disco mod a try. The very first thing I noticed was the one sided, no option to join KDF, must be Starfleet. This brings the score to Federation 5 and Klingons 3. I am only guessing PvP as Klingon must suck, if it is being done at all.

I made a stupid little alien with a ginormous forehead and started to play The Age of Discovery. The tutorial was very stale and felt much like that old Foundry "Water the Bush". Tilly got on my nerves rather quickly, I prayed to God and my prayer was answered that she did not join my team.

I gave the class the motivational toast, that soon we will all die in honor of serving the Federation. They strapped me in as the Executive Officer aboard my ship, which meant Captain Red Shirt had very little chance of retirement. There was only 3 parts to this new mod, which smelled a lot like the The Original Series mod. Sadly the first part all tutorial and rather slow.

The most action was defending the mining colony, but it felt slow. The ending was predictable and after an hour of play, I was done, and back in the 25th and ½ century. I then exited and deleted my character... because we all know the rest.

But you don't know the rest, and this is NOT an expansion, but a Season, meaning, as they have already said numerous times, more missions to come over the next year.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Which to be fair he can do on another character Disco Toons have nothing special for old or returning players they are targeted at new players who have watched Discovery and come here for that reason... I still think they should of done some sort of special thing like the recruitement events or temporal event to make it who rolling as an alt I'm still surprised they didn't just re-use the temporal agent event thing its basically the same story.

I was considering this weekend to roll a DSC character but when I weighed up what differences it really offers me over my existing Federation characters the idea got shot down. Other than a unique starting experience and a few visual effects like beam down/up and tricorder scan once you're out the tutorial basically you're running the same Feature Episodes as any other Federation character. There's no incentive like previous factions with a recruitment event to grind through those FE and proceed with the levelling experience.
Other than the Walker Class leveller ship which becomes obsolete as it only scales to T4 and the Europa class the other 2 ships the T6 Walker and Crossfield are lobi and lockbox respectfully so not wildly available. So other than the Europa at this moment in time there's not even a nice selection of Discovery Era ships to immerse yourself in at end game to purchase from the C-Store

Hello rubber banding my old friend, time to bounce around the battlezone again, where are all my bug reports going?, out of love with this game I am falling, As Cryptic fail to acknowledge a problem exists, Shakes an angry fist, And from Support all I'm hearing are the sounds of silence.

I do get it. I am just stating they repeat this agenda with the time agent. Then on my other Star Fleet toon, they ask me to learn about it on the holodeck. I am not a lover/hater of the series, I just find this as another non content, false faction, season based around a CBS fan fiction. Me Star Trek Federation, me go kill Klingon now, me so smart, I go kill all ugly Klingons. If you cannot capture the players attention in the first 20 minutes, then it is poorly written.

The history of the game (I have been here for a while) they made us rank up Feds just to get a Klingon, which made the PvP 50 Federation to 1 Klingon warrior. I don't PvP all that much, but there is no real KDF love in this game. I am still offered a 5 to 3 ratio for joining SF over KDF. At least, with The Original Series season, you get original uniforms and the classy classic starship. This one gave me a uniform that came off the rack from the moldy oldie Enterprise TV series. I really didn't see any "perk" to making a DISCO toon. This season is a much ado about nothing.

"no real KDF love in this game".....then explain why KDF has more unique missions than 2409/DSC Feds and Jemmy's? Even more so now Fed missions have been removed. Explain the new FED/KDF ships that have been released.

This game was not made with KDF in mind. I too have been around an awful long time. When the KDF was rejigged to add levelling from 1, they received a great storyline, which still is BIGGER then the Fed's story, including updates to those missions. Only Romulans have significantly more stories than anyone.

Saying that, if you watched the Live-streams, then you'd know that KDF DSC is possible (as other races have also been touted), but they'd need the metrics to back it up.

All this new season is doing is adding a new starting route for DSC fans, on top of missions for everyone else to play. Other than starting in the DSC, there are no other perks. Just because you deem it poorly written, like others who just don't like the source material, doesn't mean it actually is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone must remember that.

"Faction" = origin story. Accept it and move on, you'll be happier.

Wow, such a "hot take." Fractions apparently are being created to help make sure that there are more FED PVPers instead of KDF. Mind = blown!
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

I do wonder how many of those 0 are feds and KDF. :pensive:

As someone who doesn't want another ____ Recruit, I'm glad that I can just play the tutorial and then delete the DSC toon.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Everyone got a free slot as normal with a new faction so most Vets will level an alt for the admiralty system/dil farming.

Agreed, we need another recruiting event about as much as we need another reputation or more server lag.

I played through all of the Age of Discovery content yesterday and then sped through most of the Klingon War chapter in order to see the changes wrought in that older content. It seems clear to me that at whatever point during the creation of Victory is Life that the decision was made to also do Age of Discovery, that Cryptics focus was unfortunately split. VIL came out the better of the two, with a better degree of cohesion overall. AoD is a bit of a hot mess, rushed to the finish line and it does not serve Star Trek Online well at all ..... at this point. When the additional content ... eventually ... gets here, perhaps that perception might change, but even saying that Age of Discovery is primarily intended for new fans of Star Trek Discovery as an entry point to Star Trek Online can't diminish the rushed quality of this content. I suppose that other changes made to the reputation system or the mission journal or updating old game content was a necessary thing that needed to be done, but it also feels as if this effort was hopefully going to gloss over the ridiculous time shift that occurred in Downfall with current veteran players? The mycelial event should have booted us over to the Mirror Universe, not into a familiar ["redacted"] observatory. What happened felt more to me like I suddenly lost my internet connection and simply missed out on the latter third of what went on at the conclusion of Downfall? The Battle of Caleb IV had an ending, Downfall jerked the player away .... before the content should have concluded. I will not be creating an additional AoD toon, as what happened was like getting intentionally screwed by this developer.

I enjoyed Victory Is Life and my new Gamma alt had a purpose as there were nice account incentives to play him. AOD had no such incentives and since it's launch missions have bugged out, lag has increased, and the game is getting more frustrating to play. Since I can't even complete the Breen or Iconian Arcs now because the missions have maps that haven't patched and keep kicking me out, I'll just go back to my Gamma and Delta alts and finish their progression.

100 % of the players in the queue are Fed, and 100 % of them are KDF.
100 % are also from the mercenary faction.

as time passes I value the new graphics more and more - the different transporter, tricorder, warp, and weapons. Also maybe even more than this the congratulatory voice upon promotions and points. Killy's cheerful encouragement. Odo's slight melancholy. Helps me through the day.
