How to disable STO's 'System Specs Check'

So for a while now there has been an annoying little message bugging me about my drivers at the character login screen. I know that the drivers I am using are old. There is a good reason for that. My Graphics cards are old, so newer drivers, which are optimized for newer cards actually give me worse performance, and in some case's stop games working at all (I'm looking at you ark survival evolved)

My 580's might be old, but you know what? STO is not demanding. They are perfectly capable of running STO on max settings with no trouble, in fact they can do so quite happily in nvidia surround mode as well, no issues at all at a 5760 by 1080 resolution.

So yeah, that little message has been irking me for a while. But its not a big deal, I only see it briefly when I log in any way. But today STO popped up a far more annoying 'Failed System Specs Check' box and wants to reset my game settings. This on its own would also be fine, but it proposes to challenge me with this every month until I update my drivers.

So if there are any devs out there, please adjust the damn thing. For any one else who knows, is there a file I can delete, a variable in a config file I can edit, or a command line I can add to turn this off? I don't want to be bothered with it every month.

Why was this moved to technical issues? It's not a bug. Its working as designed isn't it? As far as I can tell the system is designed to identify users with out of date drivers. It identified my out of date drivers and now, as designed, its trying to get me to update them.

I am experiencing zero technical issues hear. My problem is that I don't like being told to update my drivers once a month to newer ones which are not optimised for cards using the fermi architecture. The fact that newer drivers don't work so well for me is not the fault of cryptic, or nvidia, its just normal that optimisations for new generations of GPU would come at the expense of older ones.

The issue at hand hear is that I dislike an aspect of STO that is working as designed, not that I am having a technical issues. This topic is no different to saying, 'I think all andorians should be forced to have white hair' or 'I would like the game to be more federation focused' or 'I think the minimap is too small'.

I would like a way to tailor the game to my preferences. But rather then asking for bigger gravity wells, this time I am asking for less anoying monthly messages telling me to update my drivers.

No no, as in GeForce GTX 580's.

Thankfully the 3GB variant and not the more common 1.5GB. Have you seen how much VRAM Some games are using these days? Its obscene. Still 3GB is still sufficient, just a few games I have to bump the textures down to medium for. Clockspeed wise they are miles behind newer cards, but I've yet to feel like they aren't fast enough for anything.

The only disappointing thing about them is that nvidia aren't implementing driver support for vulkan on the 500 series and lower. But the only game requiring that so far for which I have any interest is X4 Foundations. So I am in no rush to upgrade for it yet.

Still point is, STO was released more or less the same year my graphics cards were, and they were top of the line back then. Despite STOs various engine updates it still doesn't cause them to brake a sweat. No reason for the game to harass me to update my drivers when everything is fine. If i did that I would not only see my performance drop in STO, a few games I own would turn into a crash happy mess.

Much as the industry likes to harp on about updating your drivers, my experience has been that you should probably stop three or four years after your cards generation. Because the hardware developers will have moved on to optimizing for newer systems, which means your old hardware is going to stop seeing improvements. Unless a new game you want to play actual needs a driver update to run, you may be better off staying with what you have.

Of course consumers mistake the relatively minor and incremental detriments to their machines performance as being their cards getting old. When actually its just the driver updates, reverting to older drivers will in many cases give you back the performance loss you attributed to hardware age. The industry is happy not to educate consumers about this, as it leads them to buy new hardware sooner rather than later.

Of course in the case of mid range and low end cards you really should be replacing a lot sooner. But that's not my case. I bought enthusiast level hardware precisely to see how long I could coast before upgrading. I have made it eight years and right now I am thinking I will make it to ten.
