(Fleet) Admiral (or whatever awesomely great title) but no command... Playability issues???

Hi all,

Before anything, if you thought this post was about damage, survivability, or any "gamechanging effect" that would make someone OP, well go seek a different topic, as it is not.

I play this game primarily for RP reasons.
I do not craft, I do not do Reps (well actually, i did begin these a wee back, because my AWESOME FLEET suggested I should (read: kept hammering on me about it), though I do not really give a flying bat about it.
Ditto for duty officers and all that comes with it.
Ship cards?
Bah...

No, to me it is simply arcs.
The role play side, if you like.
I can have a jolly good time in arcs (and yes, the Fleet events, as i am after all a Fleet member (and Quartermaster (Fleet Bank Manager)), with the with-coming logical tasks a fleet has.

You gain finally a character with so many stars, medals, links and whatnot that the character became burried under that heap of stuff, that, frankly, is about as usable as a toilet plunger on the sun.

But you, as always, are send out.
Ofcourse, now the Klingons/Feds learned to behave, and we smacked the hell out the Romulans, showing them their place way below on the ladder, got our butt kicked by Iconians and Jam'Chedar, but incredibly overcame that by tying 3 warp-capacitators together and use that to fire an unmodified phaser that was likely to explode, but sent the whole back into some Zombie zone from Superman and thus won the war after all, there suddenly are large cockroaches that infiltrated the local kitchen, and we are called to exterminate that vermin.

So entire fleets -which actually died a few times before, but hey, who cares- are summoned to said kitchen and go beat up them alien pricks.

You, my "captain", are highest in rank, but you're still thrown around by the local chefs, and though you have a massive fleet at... well... almost... but not at all... command, you go fight the buggers off.

Question:
Why do we get these insane ranks, if we are not eligible to actually USE these?
On the ground we can command our men a bit, telling them to engage X or Y, stand ground or advance, but in space... we are just... well... not a clue what precisely.
We cannot send someone up, or tell them to stay back, or cover Z.

I find it a bit... well... discomforting, silly, unrealistic...

Would love to have just a BIT of command, equal to the super ranks I have earned with blood, sweat and sacrifice of others...

    You do have command, it's called the Admiralty System, and just like an Admiral would do, you send out task forces to deal with situations. Whilst, like an Admiral, you don't get to see these task forces in action, you do get rewarded. It is realistic and you do get to use this rank.

    An awfully long-winded and incoherent way of saying "boff ships plz."

    Which, of course, would be awesome, but nothing that hasn't been discussed a million times.

    Id love the admrility system to have more depth. So its not just a click system. Kinda like what Birth of the federation was

    It's not impossible; the Jem Hadar characters now have wingmen. I could see Fleet Admirals being able to at least command a pair of their own fully outfitted ships as wingmen, or if that's too complex for Cryptic's ancient game engine, at least "stock" versions of owned ships, and limited to standard ships (ie: No Lockbox/Lobi/Promotional/Event Ships accompanying your Fleet Admiral into battle; only standard C-Store/Fleet/T1-T6 ships).

    Why does the Admiral get sent on the away team, and have to flip all the switches even when she's got her Chief Engineer and her Chief Scientist standing over her shoulder, watching? (Rather than "realistically" ordering an away team down, and telling them to flip the switches)


    Because it's a game.

    edit: just like in WoW/etc, your 100th+ level physical god, covered in flaming skulls & glowing auras, renowned as the slayer of multiple cosmic forces of evil.... will still be asked to go fetch some water, and catch a fish for dinner, at the next random town the get to.

    This horse left the barn long ago.

    They should have divorced Rank from Level (simply 'unlocking' rank titles as you progressed). They should have capped rank titles at Captain or Fleet Captain, with Admiral unlocked only by Fleet leaders.

    But someone somewhere at Cryptic was bound and determined to force Fleet Admiral down our throats. With NPCs hardwired to address you as such regardless of the rank title you choose or the rank insignia you wore.

    The 'Admiralty' system was the patchwork they did as a response to many, Many, MANY threads just like this one. (Which would still work fine for Fleet Captains BTW).

    Kinda surprised they came to their senses with the latest rank increase and didn't start calling us 'President of the Federation' or 'Chancelor of the Empire'... but who knows, maybe that's next when we gain another 5 levels. Ugh.

    I still play BOTF even on my brand new machine but let's be serious. That isn't going to happen.

    Exactly. Should if been capped at Fleet Captain or as high as the honorary title of Commodore for the Federation. KDF still can get Dahar Master. Romulans, well that's a bit problematic. Maybe Legate.

    But yes to get admiral ranks, actually have to be in and run or help run a fleet.

    OK, some if not all missed the whole idea.
    I do not want BOff ships, I do not want automatization, I do not want [X or Y].

    I am asking however, for the space version of Attack my Target, Defend my Target, Stand Ground, so I can somewhat send the fleet where I want them, or on who I want them.

    Example:
    Klingon Arc - The House Always Wins.
    You have to eradicate the House of Dork... err, Torg.
    The I.K.S. Mudj, having the House of Martok lady on board, needs to survive (optional).

    But what do you know... the I.K.S. Mudj is piloted by the house cat, gets in trouble before you can even think of her as you are tearing through enemy forces, trying to stay alive.
    Garfield managed somehow to get seperated, more, to fly into an enemy heap of Dork... err, Torgs, and is being pounded upon with a massive sausage.
    The I.K.S. Mudj dies of heart attack due to a ton of grease...

    Now, in all seriousness, why can't I select a friendly ship, and till it to guard the I.K.S. Mudj?
    As player, you cannot always check whether the one that needs protection is in good shape, or tell the to protected ship to not wander of, but to stick on your TRIBBLE, as you mow a path through the enemy.

    It would be oh so logical?

    In the okd starfleet command games they had fleet commands. Think even st legacy did

    Without boff ships, you don't have a fleet to send anywhere.

    Those ships, such as the group flying with you in Delta Flight, are not under your command. The group in Delta Flight is under the command of Tom Paris, as are you.

    Point is to have a fancy title.

    In the main gameplay the player does the job of a lieutenant at the highest. Admiralty/doffs are the command role.

    Captain is a hell of a lot more fancy in Star Trek than "fleet admiral".
    You get that along the way, too. To each his own.

    OK, what we have here is gamers that elude the whole of Star Trek, seems.
    Give them a ship, and off they go kill whatever is red with no interest in the deeper layer of the game.
    Klingons don't get drunk.

    Or, we just understand that the various high-end titles they throw at us for being high level are just that - cosmetic level titles, and that the actual gameplay (leading a ground away team; flying our ship) isn't based on rank titles but on "this is a game". Specifically an action/MMO, not a grand strategy game... so even though we have a title that suggests we should sit in an office moving markers around on a sector map, we're going to keep grabbing a phaser & tricorder, and running into that Jeffries Tube to tighten a edit: valve. (seriously, that first one was censored?)


    Would it be nice for them to give us a drop-down menu where we could pick which of the "ranks" we're actually addressed by? Sure. Because, again - they're cosmetic. They don't mean anything in the grand scheme of the game.

    The point that really hammered in the message for me was New Romulus. Where everyone thinks it makes sense to say "Hello, Admiral! Thanks for offering to come down here, personally & alone, to help our colony by fixing broken appliances, gathering plant samples, and painting the fence," rather than doing what any rational Captain or 2iC would do & ordering 100 guys from Damage Control, Engineering, and Science down there to do it instead.

    It's an action game, not a simulation of Starfleet operations.

    We already have a drop-down menu where we can pick our title...it's just completely ignored and the game calls us "Admiral" anyway.
