lockbox need a makeover due to legal reasons

chrdragon1chrdragon1 Member Posts: 35 Arc User
as one read the legal system mattering lockboxes
you will either need to get liences for gambling in all countries to be allowed to use your current lockbox system
or remove the function from the lockbox that the content could be traded for it with real money.
its these 2 choices you have.

since if lockboxes have content that can be exchange with real money it counts as gambling and falls under the same rules as any physical Casino

for this you will have to remake the lockbox system or get gambling lience in most countries

either remove the zen lock form the lockboxes or get proper gambling liences

your choice on how you solve it

the longer you wait the bigger this matter will only get,
so decide to prevent this from getting out of hand.

ps same thing with all ARC games not just STO

the lockbox and items after law can not have a monetary (real money currency) vaule after some legal systems from a few contries
if they do, it counts as gambling.

remove lockbox system and put the content seperatly upo for sale and can also be put in discount packages.

this would still make the items payed and you will also not need a gambling liences

what is allow with lockbox is when they and there content is not aviable for any monetary (real money currency) vaule
because as long no real money is used it does not count as gambling legal wise at least.
strictly speaking concept wise its still gambling if any content is given random luck based.

just to clarify a few things

The lockbox in STO does not contain any items with any real world value, and the box itself is not sold directly for real money. The means to open a box has a choice to be acquired using a currency which is bought directly with real money or traded for using another in game currency. I dont think any of your argument held up other than the final bit about it being luck based RNG, which some regions wanted those odds to be made public. Lockboxes are an optional part of play so if you dont like them just ignore them like most of us do.

a lockbox has still a monetary vaule

Zen and dilitum can be excchnaged for real monet which give the lockboxes a real monetary vaule

Zen can be echange for like 1100 Zen is round 10 Euro
dilitium is exchanged round 160-500 is 1 Zen

Lootbox keys go for 100 Zen

20 lootbox go for 200 dilitium

all this gives you real money vaule to the lockboxes nomatter what

just saying threw law it has a monetary vaule
what can in few countries cause for cryptic and perfect world need to own a gambling liences

all i wnat to point out thats this can cause the need for gambling liencens, that they need to own in a few coutnries

the reason i say this is because i do want the company perfect world and cryptic to still make nice games and it would be sad if they get fiend by coutnries for a stupid reason like not owning a proper liencens

Your logic is flawed. They don't sell you a box- They sell you a key worth a dollar. And you always get one key for one dollar.
What you choose to do with that key- Is no one elses business!
This logic has allowed many games to do this for a lot longer before 'Hating the box' became cool.
Legally, I don't think STO will change.

But I suggest you consult with a lawyer if you want further info regarding.

Disclaimer- I am not a lawyer, just a gamer.

I love it. A random player knows more about the legality of this game than the entire team of legal experts at Cryptic.

So if I offered you $500 in real cash to give me the newest lockbox ship you just won from a lockbox you'd just decline? :D
Unless EVERYTHING that comes out of a lockbox is BoA, then yes they have cash value.
(I'll ignore the whole 'just sell the account' argument for the moment.) ;)

Yes I would, only an idiot would go for that. What makes you think they will keep their end of the deal?

Can just make fraudulent claim on card or cancel the transaction, ebay is full of it nowadays.

Maybe Blizzard should drop the WoW Token ingame because I can add bnet balance to my account and then buy stuff for other people once they give me money despite the fact that people rely on them to add game time as they cannot afford it themselves due to monetary circumstances.

If you want the ship you dont have to pay real money for it, buy keys > put keys on exchange > buy ship.

EVERYTHING tradeable has a monetary value, simple as that, maybe we should shut down all online games eh.

It is not the money value that is the primary reason for lootbox getting illegal, it is the randomness of the prize added to the monetary deal around them, making them a gamble, therefore subject to laws about gambling and hazard games, due their predatory nature... In almost every country gambling is forbidden in products aimed at minors and people having gambling problems, the fact that the game industry did not self regulate to avoid those kind of troubles makes governments having to act for it. The Sterling said it, nobody listened, guess what's happening.
