> But really, if you don't get the alphabet soup, just ask. We will gladly tell you what they stand for
Exactly! If I'm typing a quick response while I'm at work I'll use boff or doff or PEN or WTFBBQ instead of spelling things out, but I or someone else will be happy to explain those terms if you ask.
I'll also use jargon when answering a question or call for opinions from a veteran player, since it's faster and easier to read for them. CrtD x 3 is easier to read than "three of the critical damage modification" if you know the STO terms.
So, if you read someone's "how do I make a good science build" type thread and get confused by all the shorthand, again just ask for clarification.
Glad you found some help and found it of use for your gameplay.
Yes the lingo round here can be confusing at first (just wait until you go looking up the abbreviations for PVE maps, lol). Even i struggle sometimes and have to ask what the hell someone is on about, sometimes it's so obvious once you get told to feel foolish.
But if you ever find someone using terms you get lost with, just ask because we're more than willing to help out a new player understand things. I'll always explain any terminology i use to to any level requested where possible.
We all started out like you though, so don't ever be put off by the level of stuff to learn. Remember to just play the game, mess about, try things out to learn, and most importantly....have fun doing it all!

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
I have a question for you as a new player since right now the community manager is conducting a survey what the developers of the game could explain better.
Of the help you received from the community, what of it do you think you would have been able to figure out on your own just using the game itself as a base of imformation? Maybe participate in the "What could we explain better" topic
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Isn't there a listing of commonly used abbreviations in The Academy??? Or User Guide sections in the Forums. Maybe needs to be one stickied at the top of the General Discussions. Though not sure people read that other one for Frequently Created Threads.
"Spend your life doing strange things with weird people." -- UNK

Jargon is used because it's useful. It's an efficient way of providing accurate information quickly. Explaining all the terms in every post would defeat that purpose. And many people will feel insulted if others just assume they don't know anything.
You can always ask if you don't understand some terminology used. Someone will explain it and the next time you'll know.
this has always been a pet peeve of mine. i wish people that use abbreviations would post a key or description of them somewhere in the post, ie: FAW=fire at will. Or when they use the 1st abbreviation include both FAW(fire at will) blah blah blah FAW blah blah, then move on to the short hand.
I've spent a lot of time puzzling out some of the acronyms/abbreviations in forum posts myself.
The thing is, I'm quite grateful that someone is willing to take the time to respond and provide advice at all. I am not going to get upset or mad at them if they shorten the time taken by using acronyms and abbreviations. If they are willing to voluntarily take their time to try to help me out, I can darn sure use my own time finding out what those acronyms mean.
For example, I just pretended that I had no clue what FAW stood for, it took me @ 1.5 seconds to open a new tab, type "STO faw" into the search field and hit enter. Didn't even have to open any of the links that came up cause the answer was right there.
"STO Csv" just caused me to have to scroll down a tiny bit but there it was, and I also saw that "CRF" was provided.
What has always been a pet peeve of mine is that people are so ungrateful when someone else takes time out of their day to try and help them, just because the help requires a tiny bit of effort to understand.
