How many strings of infractions does it take to start handing out bans?

I haven't seen a single episode of ST:D and thus have no opinion regarding that show. I'm just really not looking forward to making another character. I just made a Jem'Hadar. :|

sorry, but (for me and several others) when that was shown it indicated the entire series was a holodeck sim.

I'm more interested in seeing this land on the mimic server than live to be honest. As much as I love playing through the ToS starfleet, Jem'Hadar, I'm not so sure about an additional toon to add to the collection of unnecessary alts that'll only play the missions associated only with its creation - especially less so with rumours of T6 reputation, far to much grind for less than mediocre reward.

However, floating about as an insta lvl65 captain in a wells-class with my own discovery era captain killy on Mimic for a while does sound rather nice. - 100% fir bug testing purposes only... nothing else.
And you get a free max level captain! and YOU get a free max level captain! and YOU get a....
But I suppose cryptic can't exactly refuse to do this expansion, even if it is ill prepared (compared to other expansions) and initially lacking in content. Cause damn free advertising along with a live Star Trek show sure will reap in that newbie player micro-transaction money! Woooo!

just relax and see what they actually bring to the table. if it's got another resource pylon (subfaction character) you can still choose not to participate, or choose to make one, or choose to say 'sod it all'...just wait and see what they bring. In a way, you'll be at an advantage, since you won't have good or bad pre-impressions when you look at it, and can weigh and measure with a clean slate.

don't let me, and don't let Disco fans, tell you what to enjoy or not enjoy, go off your own impressions, when it comes out.

all the negative and all the positive press is meaningless for you, if YOU decide it's so. This is entertainment. consume the media, don't let the media consume you.

My ignorance of, and indifference toward Discovery is not really a factor. To me, as someone who has no frame of reference regarding the show, all the complaining is just noise.

My issue is exclusively with the possibility of yet another recruitment event within 6 months. As long as that doesn't happen, I can ignore the new content at my leisure. If however there is a recruitment event with lots of account wide dilithium and prizes where I would be foolish to not make Disco character, I will be less than pleased.

After Delta and Gamma within so short a time (and all the player data that goes with that) I'm honestly not expecting a major DSC recruitment drive, especially with the prospect of an AOY rerun which we were told not too long ago that they're considering. I think there is a limit on how many of those they can run without upending STO's economics (3x the rewards now for dilithium) to the point where simple leveling becomes one of the most lucrative activities. That should be easy enough for Cryptic to quantify.

That said, what you can always do in case there is another event (and what I did for the Delta re-run) is just bank a character to qualify as a recruit and hold off on leveling that one until you're in the mood. The rewards don't have to be earned within a set time, you just need to put your foot in the door with character creation and completing the tutorial.

I'm actually more surprised we don't see more recruitment events as they are low effort in terms of development, fairly high interest from the players, and involve having players replay all the content with a new character rather than creating new content for old characters.

I personally find them tedious, but acknowledge that they represent a very rewarding concept for the developers (high interest, low effort).

The economy adjusts to supply, and unlike EC, dil is not a currency that is moved from player to player, it is mostly consumed either through ZEN trading, or projects, etc. A shift in the dilithium economy would be temporary and absorbed in exchange rates.

Additionally, leveling being more lucrative than grinding is not a bad thing for Cryptic. Grinding is one of the least popular concepts in MMOs, but accepted as being a standard part of it. If they can get people to level alts instead.. that's a pretty big plus (for them.. I'm not going to do it).

What I'm referring to isn't basic economics but a shift in the reward structure to disproportionately favor leveling over end game. This can lead to an imbalance in gameplay structure where the perpetual creation and destruction of alts (cheaper than maintaining them all over time) is favored over long-term investment and character development (beyond the primary characters you're earning the dilithium for.) Result: bad, it upends the structure of the game. There is an upper limit to how many rewards can be metered out by recruitment events, set by effective income rate of an end-game character versus one leveling to qualify for recruitment claims.

1: A NEW SEASON of STO is a GOOD THING. Unless some of you actually prefer no new content for STO...
2: Creating a new Character for New Content; if you don't want to make a new character or play the new content, then don't. No-one is holding a weapon to your head, forcing you to do anything. Use the FREE CHARACTER SLOT or not, as you see fit. It's your account do what you want with it.
3: ALL Iterations of STAR TREK have two, unifying themes; Diversity. Tolerance. Best represented in IDIC; Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. The sheer magnitude of divisive malice being thrown around here isn't just illogical, it's appalling!

Some folks need to step back and take a breather and calm down a bit in here. Keep the discussions civil guys

This is not an Expansion!! It is a new Season. Expansions involve the release of a major Ship Pack. We are not getting that here.

I am a True fan of Trek ........

I think that you could benefit from taking a hit of our yown closing advice, so for Spock's sake - please do take a chill pill yourself.

Discovery looks pretty, but for many of the legal reasons that you point out that the series had to chart it's own course, I felt as if they should have just said that this was a Kelvin Timeline series; which could have potentially explained virtually any alterations (courtesy of Nero's rebooted universe). But Paramount did not want to do that, and thus hedged its bets; causing grief that it could have avoided.

For STO, I am open to any content and this Age of Discovery will be welcome - - as far as the exclusive TV app stuff; well, to each his own.

Paramount has nothing to do with Discovery. It's all CBS.

Then perhaps they should've shown some foresight and waited for the merger to go through before creating a new series and tying it to a streaming service.

The day the announced it they said on Twitch that the only reason it's not an expansion is because they don't want to stop everything to build one just after the previous one launched. Their goal is for Age of Discovery to have everything an expansion would have by the time they are finished with it.

Discovery looks pretty, but for many of the legal reasons that you point out that the series had to chart it's own course, I felt as if they should have just said that this was a Kelvin Timeline series; which could have potentially explained virtually any alterations (courtesy of Nero's rebooted universe). Consider that in writing a new series you generally want as much leeway as possible (at least in your original contribution to franchise lore) to write characters, factions, and settings calibrated to your vision for how that series should be in to avoid undue constraints which may force creative choices that directly undermine the quality of the show (as you've been tasked with making it.) If there had been a CBS-Paramount merger prior to Discovery then I don't think that any of the major bullet points would have changed. The details, sure. The series would have been written at a slightly different point in time and the exact creative and casting decisions probably slightly different to what they ultimately turned out to be.

CBS would have still rather promoted the prime universe for the direct knock-on effect that has for promoting the rest of their library (and equivalence with the KT, that's an alternate history and one that doesn't mark itself as being so exceptional that all derivative ST works must now follow its lore) as opposed to a subset of movies and avoid the above issue of inheriting an extra host of creative decisions apart from the needs of the show (ex. imploding Vulcan.) Plus, this point in Trek history is still wide open for interpretation (internet grief just being presumptive to a fan view that between ENT and TOS there was a long period of gradual change from NX class to Constitution, rather than punctuated equilibria marked by detours and complexity. Ie. authentic cultural evolution, in the realm of television sci-fi.)
