French & other langages

Hello everyone, I would like to propose an idea to the developers of the game about French and German translations! You have created the Foundry which is a very good tool for creating missions for the game! Why not use this same Foundry as a second tool to translate missions already existing in the game? We could propose this suggested tool to all French & German translators who would like to participate to help to develop the game! It is unfortunate to see that many players cancel their subscriptions due to lack of translated content.

Outsourcing localization to community volunteers for main game content does have a significant risk involved. Ie. that you're giving players direct access to what others see in the main game. That could lead to problems (either players taking it upon themselves to re-write story points as they see fit or outright abusing their power of translation for inappropriate shenanigans) forcing Cryptic to provide direct oversight to all translation work in order to take some responsibility for what goes into their game.

That's still a lot of work for them and on top of that it would have to be work on content that's already shipped because otherwise the chance for leaks is maximal. So, the benefit is marginal (compared to more internal localization work.)

Furthermore, the Foundry is not directly comparable to Cryptic's missions. They're built on separate platforms, such that no Foundry mission could be exported to the main game and vica versa. The toolset simply doesn't exist to give players any kind of access to main mission dialog and any effort spent to create that toolset could be much better spent on the Foundry itself. The only work around to this would be for vetted and managed players to work off of scripts sent by Cryptic (for mutual intelligibility and a consistent work process.)

Still, similar results could be achieved with more hires in the localization team (while avoiding all the issues in working remotely with community volunteers for main game content, only being able to localize old content, and running that process to a consistent schedule sufficient to provide timely translations.) If you want to help personally, you might still try reaching out to Cryptic directly or simply encourage people in the community to produce more French/German foundry content to compensate for what Cryptic isn't able to provide (due in large part to the fact that they're a small studio with limited resources). ;)

For some reason I thought this post was going to be about something else entirely from the title. My brain went to a bad place and imagined a captain that was a terribly offensive french stereotype complete with waxed thin black villain mustache, an elongated cigarette in one hand, and a wine glass in the other hand. Can you imagine?
