What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

New laptop goes to sleep within first few minutes of launching STO.

New laptop: Windows 10, quad-core i7, 16gb RAM, 1TB HDD, etc etc.

Yeah, STO is pretty much unusable at the moment.

Let's just start off by saying, I don't have any funky power settings. I just can't play the game without the computer putting itself to sleep.

Anyone who can shed a little light on this (or they've figured out how to fix it) or any questions, please comment. It would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go into the power settings and change the profile to never go to sleep when plugged in.

    - Right click the battery icon in the right side of the taskbar. Then click Power Options.
    - Make sure the Balanced or Performance profile is selected. Click on Change Plan Settings.
    - Where it says "Put the computer to sleep", change whatever is listed to "Never".
    - Save changes.

(or go to the control panel and click Power Options - there are so many ways to do the same thing  )

I already disabled that two different ways ("put the computer to sleep: never" and "sleep after: never"). If it was as easy as that, I'd have fixed it ages ago. ;)
That was actually the first thing I thought of. I've googled around for similar issues already and I'm baffled.

Any full screen game and this happens.

To Enter Bios different keys Hold key Del or F2 or F10 or F11 after Power On
You can Watch in You Laptop Manual Which Key you must Hold to Enter the Bios or just google xD

The Problem ist You have a Added GFX Card So laptop Thinking he have nothing to do cos the onbaord gfx idle ...

(It's delete..first thing I did was check the BIOS...)

Power Off Energy Saving: Disabled (I made sure this was disabled a long time ago)

There are no other power options available to set.

You're right though. It does have switchable graphics. One is Intel and the other is NVIDIA.

Worst case, I could set STO to use the Intel graphics so this doesn't happen.

STO sucks bad on intel iGPU's..I am suffering with that till my replacment 1060 arrives..

Anyways whats the brand? cause I have noticed different features in the OEM software of laptops (Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Viao, HP) and most have a power configuration in there also..Have you checked within the NVIDIA control panel for power? Causse that MAY be causing so trouble..Also the 376.XX drivers were screwy..

Ok i have a little Read About
You Must First Install Intel Drivers Then the Nvidia Drivers
Then in Nvidia Control Panel Options Settings Check On High Load in percent or so use only NVIDA
you can too make a game profil for sto in nvida controll panel that say USE ONLY 100 % Nvida card for this game

You Problem is that on low GPU load he CHange to the intel Device (happen at load screen and smilar )
that dont like most of games :D

Sure, but it's not worth the time to go through the steps for all possible ways to access the Power Options.

Try uninstalling the nVidia drivers, then download current drivers from nVidia's site and install them.

jaguarskx: Yeah, I know, I'm just kidding, hence the wink emoticon (which, under closer examination doesn't even look like one).

All drivers are current already. One of the first things I do is update drivers. I don't keep factory-installed anything.

ekypyros: The only options in NVIDIA control panel are: "Adjust image settings with preview", "Manage 3D settings" and "Set PhysX Configuration". Nothing about load or anything like that.

You can indeed add game profiles under Manage 3D settings. There's a "Power Management Mode" and I just changed it to "Prefer Maximum Performance" (maybe that did something). Still nothing there about load though. (Well, I did have to change the location of the game since the profile thinks it's somewhere else)

salvation4: Game actually remains stable using the Intel GPU. Even ran a PvE with it and nothing choked. So that's something.

Nothing in the NVIDIA control panel about power. Using NVIDIA drivers 378.92. Laptop is an ASUS N550JX-IB71T.

Yes, I know you're all trying to help. I appreciate it. Especially maddening for me since I know what I'm doing and I know what should be set but can't find anywhere to set it. One would think it would be in BIOS, right? Nope. Let's make it as difficult as possible. Sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of exactly which setting but you didn't suggest what to change it to.

But I'll set it to single diplay, because of this.

This should probably be a FAQ question or something on multiple GPUs. Just a thought.

Edit: Rebooted (in case I needed to) and that didn't change anything. The problem persists.

Hello Some Laptops have a setting that allow you to choose which display adapter you want to use. This is found under personalization in widows 10. The other thing is to try to update the display drivers for the display adapters you have installed. My laptop did the same it's 3+ years old I updated the display adapter and it worked fine for me. Try it and see what the results are. Nvidia Display adapter driver are sorted by series there are 2 series the notebook and desktop series make sure you select the correct series. The model would either be a geforce or quadero the model number would be for example fx 5200 or later. Select the correct one and download and install. Before doing this make a backup of you documents just in case it makes it worse. this is called troubleshooting. Run dxdiag.exe to see if there's and directx issues as well if any follow all recommendations to resolve them.

What you're thinking of is the option to switch displays (which is not found in Personalization, it is found in Display Settings). This has nothing to do with my issue.

There is no option to force Windows to use a specific GPU (display adapter), if that's what you're thinking. There is no setting for this because it doesn't exist. Switchable graphics does not work this way. It makes no sense to use your dedicated graphics to use the Web for example and it would compromise battery life, nor would it make sense to change the default GPU when the issue is with one program.

As I mentioned before, all drivers have been updated already & please assume I've already done this. I don't use preinstalled drivers. I didn't just take the laptop out the box and hope for the best, trust me. Updating drivers (and removing junk) is one of the first things I do when I'm setting up a new machine. I know how to troubleshoot & I know what I'm doing (also said this before), no offense. It's kind of what I do. I've spent my whole life working on computers.

Please do assume I have some experience in using computers, I just lack the specific knowledge to fix this particular problem. If it were obvious, I would have fixed it. :/

If your new laptop is going to sleep when playing all games at full screen, and none of the other things you have fixes the problem, then I suggest RMA'ing the laptop for another one. A brand new laptop should not be having this type of problem.

The only other suggestion I can make is to do a complete reinstall of Windows 10 on the laptop. It is possible that something could have gone wrong with the installation from the factory that is causing the problem. If this does not fix the problem, then definitely RMA the laptop.

Ideally yes but I'd prefer not to do that.

Option two: Play the game using the Intel GPU since that option actually works.

I'm not a hardcore gamer. This is the only full-screen game I play. As long as it works somehow, that's enough for me. I'm not going to RMA the computer just because I can't play one game (then spend a whole day reinstalling and blah blah). That's kind of silly. If I played more than one game, then maybe. It works beautifully doing anything else.

It's not a critical issue. If I don't find a fix for it, it's not the end of the world

    Thanks everyone.

I've solved the issue in case anyone's curious.

My solution is to go to Device Manager and disable the NVIDIA video card, then the game runs perfectly.

I tried this, followed all the instructions and the laptop still went to sleep a couple of minutes after I logged into game.
I'll stick with disabling the NVIDIA card; at least I know that works. Thanks anyway.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but are you sure it's not overheating? Does it happen in fullscreen mode as well as window maximized?

If all the power settings have sleep disabled and it's still going to sleep I can only surmise that it's either overheating and shutting down to protect itself or the power adapter can't handle the power draw. Check to see if the power brick and all cables are extremely hot to the touch. A lot of time the cable that goes from the brick to the computer will go bad and needs to be replaced.

It might also be a good idea to contact the manufacturer and ask them about it. Tho you'll probably have a number of back and forth emails about adjusting power settings.

I'm going to have to go with "gaming makes it overheat" even though it should be perfectly good for gaming.
(Mind you, it's a relatively new laptop, in its second year, so it shouldn't be doing that at all.)
It doesn't mysteriously go to sleep any other time, otherwise I also would conclude it's the power.

I've adjusted the graphics down a bit and it seems to allow me to game for longer periods.
I've chalked this up as just something it does, a necessary evil if I want to play STO.

Laptop cooling pad does nothing, throwing the A/C on does nothing in trying to cool it down as I play...the inevitable still happens.
    I'll live.
