Gaming pad & STO?

sirhenrysirhenry Member Posts: 31 Arc User
So can anyone say if they've ever been able to use a gaming pad with sto? I had asked support if they could say that it would work, but its not directly supported so I was directed to ask other players on the forums what their experiences was.

I've begun using a joystick for controling cruisers because the joystick is easyer on my hands than holding down w a s d but this has taken my hands farther away from the hotkeys I've been using for boff skills hence the gaming pad question.

The game doesn't support this, the gamepad supports the game. What people do not realize is these gamepads just emulate the regular keyboard, but in a much more convenient location. You simply tell the software for the gamepad which button on it you want to use, and ten what key press(es) you want that button to activate.

For a few years I used a Saitek Command Unit with much success, but it finally broke. Now I found one that I like even better, and is less expensive, so I am running a ACEPHA T9 Pro Gaming Keypad, and yes it works GREAT!

I was gonna use an Xbox pad but I read I’d have to set up a load of new keybinds so a just gave up. I was hoping there would be a pre written keybind somewhere online for it.

Ok I was wondering if I should have added a bit more info on what I ment after I noticed gaming controllers also getting named gaming pads. What I'm speaking of is like a smaller keyboard in a way dedicated for having more direct hotkeys for in game actions. I've heard of one for world of warcraft before and seen a few on amazon and youtube. I haven't seen anything exactly like what I'd want but what I'd really like something with 40 or 50 keys that I could have off to the side maybe to my right. The keyboard keys are spread out more in an elongated setup rather that a closer square position, it would be like a numberpad setup rather that being longer. I have my joystick on my left so the gaming keypad would be on the right near my mouse.

Only drawback of the joystick is the hat switch is hard coded to menu navigation when I'd much rather use it for camera angle (hard coded in sto not the joystick itself). The gaming controller can do it but needs both hands and there's not alot of space for ability/boff hotkeys. Trying to change the yaw thats used currently for making the camera angle go up and down to something else doesn't work out either no matter what I try asigning it to it will also still move the camera up and down.

razor orbweaver as an example of what I'm speaking of.

gaming keypad should work... it's just a mini keyboard with a built in wrist support. so long as you can map the keys to a regular keyboard. course they will probably need to implement software to support it.

perhaps download The FES STO keybind tool, https://sourceforge.net/projects/sto-keybind/ This has support for Xbox controllers, ie Right bumper for FireAll translates to Joy6 "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FireAll"

    I use a razer orbweaver
    26-153-116-14.jpg

it doesn't have the 40-50 keys you specified, but does have 20, along with a couple more above and below a joystick...all of which are mechanical...and it also has a good number of profile slots, along with a series of differently colored lights that'll light up in different sequences as a visual indication of what profile you're on...so you can set up a couple keys to change profiles on the fly, if you really need more keys than it offers on the hardware.

and yeah, it just emulates a small keyboard, so pushing a button on the orbweaver set to "w" will have the same effect as pushing "w" on your keyboard, and so forth. so there's no real need for sto to specifically support it.

My Six Axis works fine with MotionJoy and BetterDS3 emulating the keyboard. Just use the joystick function for pads that don't emulate Xbox, it's easier that way.

Actually just binding a shoulder or trigger to Fire all weapons in the Keybind menu causes less lag. The More You Know...

Good new that sto should work with a gaming keypad. :) I did find one that had near the number of keys I want and size so now it's a matter of getting the money together. I saw two ones that looked cool but one was alot bigger than I think I need guess I'll post a pic when I have it.

Cool, last time I saw a vid online about gaming keypads (not the one I posted as an example) the vid said not all games can propperly support the functions of a gaming keypad maybe it was an out of date vid.

I just had to chime in on this . This guy is dead wrong. I been using a Game controller https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/product/f310-gamepad ( this one ) since day one of sto . The game supports the game pad Just goto your option and you see it supports X input which is X-Box 360 controller and Direct input in which what Microsoft window use.

My controller support both inputs( switch on back of the controller). As for game pad emulating the keyboard that also not correct. As i can walk really slowly with just pushing my analog stick slightly forward , cant do that with W.

Well, neither you nor I are wrong. I said it doesn't support game pads (gaming keyboards), and it doesn't, they support the game.

What you are showing is a gaming comtroller, completely different animal, and YES there is native support for those in game.

As you can see by the quoted text from the original post they are also speaking of the un-supported type...

Well it also supports my https://www.logitechg.com/en-sg/product/g13-advanced-gameboard . Which is reason i talked about game pad in which is what a controller is official called. Gaming Board is what up in those pictures like my G13 not gaming pad. I don't know if it just Logitech products Sto supports as it also supports my G!9 keyboard, lCD screen .

Well here we are again 3 years later and with the latest season, 'House United' broke whatever support that was in the game that allowed the game pads like the Logitech F310 in direct mode to work for ground play, stopped working as soon as that season went live. I read a little farther down the game never supported these joy sticks, I have issue with that. This is like the third time I remember since I've been playing, 2013 that a updated season going live broke the support for these joysticks. Back then maybe they had more developers that knew the guts of the code in this games and had it 'fixed' within a couple of weeks.

Did cryptic fire to many developers and now the ones that are left are so far behind that they can't even repair minor glitches in the game now?
