I had to look up the episode, then watched it (again). I recalled how much i enjoyed it!
And here I thought my limited experience with EVE Online made a cool story :P
I was also thinking of a short story set in Warhammer 40,000, where an Imperial unit responded to a distress signal, came under attack themselves, and then sent their own distress signal... which because of the way the Warp distorts spacetime, turned out to be the one they'd responded to to begin with.
"Great War! / And I cannot take more! / Great tour! / I keep on marching on / I play the great score / There will be no encore / Great War! / The War to End All Wars"
— Sabaton, "Great War"
I misspoke, I meant to say "reminded of": It's an existing story. (I don't know the title, I just read about it on TV Tropes.)
