Explanation Needed...

Everyday many notifications scroll across the screen that someone just won a free ship from a lock box. This always makes me think about buying some keys when there is something in the box I like. I never got anything out of a lock box that made me feel I got my moneys worth. But I chalked it up as just plain bad luck. ( I understand the odds) Last week while cruising the galactic highway, I saw a notification that my ALT account won a ship. (Had not played it in a couple years) I quickly logged into the other account and there was no changes. So I thought that maybe I read it wrong. Today I saw my son's account scroll across that he had won one of the Discovery ships. I called him to congratulate him, he said he hasn't played since Legacy of Romulus. Hmmm... are we being scammed? Using dead accounts to make us think a lot of people are winning?

You probably just misread denolonewolff or denol0newolf or denalonewolf etc. as it zipped past.

we can shut those notifications off. from the social menu, i believe.

No, I have seen my name scroll across there a couple of times before. I was not given a ship even though they used me to advertise it.

I'd put people misreading names higher on a probability scale than Cryptic actively putting in false messages just to "advertise" their boxes.
I do believe anybody who says he/she read their name on the screen...that's what "misreading" is...you thought you saw your name.

On my game it shows in chat so you can see clearly who has won it. If this is happening then explanation is definitely needed.

in that case, taking a screenshot should not be a difficult thing to do...yet...no evidence anywhere to be seen

Human brains are hardwired to see familiar patterns even where none exist. Screenshots or it didn't happen.

This would be my suggestion. If anyone sees this happen, definitely take a screenshot and have timestamps turned on. There are probably so many similar names out there, I'd go with the misreading explanation, too.

You can always find the notifications (and correct spelling) in chat history and anyone who thinks there's something fishy going on can start sending 'congratulatory messages' to lots of the 'winners' and see if any of the reply stating that they're not.

I have never seen any of my alts or myself winning something, unless I actually win something.. And that was the case with my latest ship, and my son called to congratulate me.., so, from my experience.. I think they are not fake, so, it must be a misread..

OP, even your current tag is familiar to me. You do understand with over 3 million accounts for the PC, you will see tags that are similar, and you are basically claiming an Urban Legend, a Myth. Someone else used to claim Cryptic were spamming names to encourage spend on keys. When the Konnie came out I won 2 in 70 boxes and someone claimed it was Cryptic, until I said no, I actually won. Another well known player buys tons, and admits in chat he does win alot, yet people claim he is Cryptic.

That's more likely to be someone else misreading veteguy904 or vettegoy904 or evetteguy etc. as you.

Before they made email default to showingf your own characters, when I was mailing myself something like doffs I'd often see very similar names to mine.

The idea that Cryptic just uses random names from time to time as fly-ins to promote the boxes is just an old urban legend like the Polybius video game. Or my personal favorite being the one saying the reason The Breach was originally removed was because the Vonph couldn't fit through the door. While they might make for an interesting conspiracy theory they're not based in fact.

With that said there are over 5 million people who play this game. From time to time there are people who will have similar names or @handles in game. In fact I saw a guy not too awful long ago using the name darkblade similar to my darkbladejk. In fact one of the original Bug Hunter crew used to get hit with mail from a guy with a similar @handle to his own that would have ships, boxes, weapons, keys, or you name it. Apparently the guy would try to send himself something in the mail to pull on another toon and would type in his own @handle wrong and send it to the wrong guy instead. If you think something is up and your name is actually being used, then I would advise getting a screenshot and/or video the next time it happens and put in a ticket with customer support.
