The Discovery Lockbox 2018

Short and to the point, I love Discovery, I love STO, would love to buy Discovery ships from the C-Store to fly in STO, but I do not enjoy loot box gambling. That's all, for what it's worth, would much rather just pay you folks the cash and get the ship straight up.

They had to introduce something for the next lock box. They already did Tzenkethi and they're not much else I can think of that they can do so what better than to do a Discovery lock box.

The Walker is in the Lobi store, but the big ship, unsurprisingly, is in the gamble box. I don't much like it anyway. Only if the RNG gods smile on me will I get one.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

Bro, you can do exactly that.

Buy master keys. Sell master keys for EC. Use EC to buy the lock box ship from the exchange/other players. No gambling involved for you, and you have a 100% chance of getting the ship every time.

I have a dozen or so lock box ships and have never opened a lock box myself.

I also have a pretty effective dilithium farm across my alts, so I don't have to spend my RL money either.

Following up on my last post, here is exactly how it works for people new to this:

    1) find out the EC price of the ship you want. For example we will use 500mil.

    2) find out how much master keys are selling for. For example we will use 5mil.

    3) take the price of the ship you want (500mil) and divide by the amount keys are selling for (5mil) = the number of keys you will need (100)

    4) purchase 100 keys, sell them for 5mil each, and suddenly you have the 500mil EC you need to buy the ship.

And like I said earlier, since you can trade dilithium for zen, you can actually purchase those keys you need without spending your own real money on zen.

STO truly does have a 100% free to play economy. You can get literally anything you want, including the rarest lock box ships, without spending your own real money.

Hell yeah. I don't care that much for the show, but those klingon ships rock the hell out of most of those disgustingly ugly old models. I wonder when we'll get the actual new klingon ground appearance options as well.

I just wish they would include the Discovery uniforms that they gave away last year (I was in the hospital when the giveaway was going on and couldn't get them as a result) in the Discovery box. Or at least I wish they had put the Discovery uniform in the 8 day giveaway for those who couldnt get it last year

Sell keys for EC, wait a couple of weeks for the price to drop, buy for EC. No gambling needed.

Remember the lock box ship odds are 1 in 250. Each key is a separate 1:250 dice roll. Even if you have a stack of 250 lock box keys, before you start opening boxes your odds of getting at least one ship are only about 2/3. ( chance of 1+ ships with N unused keys = 1.0 - ((.996) ^ N) )

It's Discovery...the one lockbox I'll throw away a Master Key on rather than open it. Sorry, just not a Discovery fan to say the least...

The Sarcophagus predates all other Klingon ships in the game. What are you talking about?

Additionally, the trait on it is weird. Klingon corpses are more efficient than actual armor plating? Like... what? If corpses are "just a shell", why they hell have they waited until now to armor up their ships with them?

    Wrong. STO has this ship:

And ENT comes before Discovery in the timeline.

Buy it (LMAO) This ship is going to go for 1.5 Bil, good luck buying it for a year at least.

Like the last person I quoted, you are also wrong. Only R&D promo ships sell for that much. Lock box ships don't because they get added to the infinity pack the very next cycle. Once that happens, these ships will sell the same as any other T6 infinity pack ship.

Time has already told. It happens every single time there is a new lock box, and then when that new ship gets added to the infinity box. I'm not speculating, I'm telling you how it works. And it's for that very reason I'm glad they decided to put this in a lock box rather than an R&D pack, since that will mean this ship will be much cheaper to buy after the initial rush.

The reason they are not in the C-Store, is because , for the most part, they are from 200 years in the past and because CBS probably said so. Not Cryptic's fault.

On another point, following others advice on selling key on the exchange....that's just folly! Why waste $300 on keys to 'guarantee' a ship that may or may not be sold on the exchange. Pick your limit and stick to it.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

It wouldn't cost $300. Not anything near it. Let's say for example you want the Kelvin timeline Connie. That costs about 350mil on the exchange. And master keys are selling for 4mil. So 300/4 = 88. That means for approx $88 you have a 100% chance to get the ship. And once the Discovery is added to the infinity box, it will be the same rarity as the Kelvin connie, which is a t6 infinity ship.

You say "pick your limit and stick to it", but what if someone's limit is higher than the number of keys it would take to do what I described above? If your limit is $100, then it would be cheaper to do what I just said than risk losing $100 and getting no ship at all.

And the last thing: you said it "may or may not be sold on the exchange". Every single ship that has ever been in a lock box is for sale on the exchange. There is no "if" about it. Lock box ship are less rare than r&d promotion ships, and even those ships are sold on the exchange. You are giving people bad advice.
  • davefenestratordavefenestrator Member Posts: 10,501 Arc User
... and there are usually a few posting here about spending $200+ on opening lock boxes but NOT getting a ship. That's the way random numbers work. If you spend $2,500 you'll get (on average) 10 ships but that's still just "on average" -- someone can spend $2,500 and fail that 1-in-250 roll all 2,500 times. Odds are low, but it's not impossible.

So: buy lock box ships with credits, be happy. Open lock boxes, usually be sad.

The only thing that makes me a sad Rattler is the lack of ground weapons. Yea I WILL get that lobi rifle... but where's the pistol? Hell... I'd even get a Discovery Bat'leth and Mek'leth for my KDF.

It does not matter if ENT comes before TRIBBLE.

" It is believed that this massive vessel dates back to the original founding of the Klingon Empire, thousands of years ago. "

The Sarcophagus was built long before that raptor was.
  • rattler2rattler2 Member Posts: 57,971 Community Moderator
I'll have to agree with red here. The Sarcophagus is an ancient design, wereas the Raptor was a modern design in the 2150s.

What they did to Klingons is a crime against Kahless.
Well, since TRIBBLE Klingons have no hair, Kahless cannot forge the first bat'leth from his hair. Maybe he had to forge it from something else which brought tears to his eyes?

I think that fits perfectly with the "just a shell" thing, however. Why not use the bodies of fallen warriors as ablative armor to protect their still-living comrades? It's not like they need them any more...

The ships are only Lobi and Lockbox? *sniggers* :D

The only thing on TRIBBLE that is on nodding terms is the name in the title and the door mechanisms. This botty-water should not even exist, not even in this game. But since they are going to command ridiculous prices on the exchange which will put it out of reach of the kiddies, it will make the millenials cry even more. So that makes me smile :)

Regarding the bodies on the hull Ablative Armor makes more sense to me. As I had speculated the sarcophagi were made from similar alloys as hull armor.

Not for nothing, but I just paid $260m for my Kelvin Connie (at the time there were at least 6 for between 260-290),... worth every EC of it too,...
