Cryptic was working on a deal with a company to do this. The company went out of buisness or something and the deal fell through. No word yet of anything to replace that. Oh and since the art assets used in STO are copyrighted to Cryptic/CBS Doing this on your own could get you into a lot of problems.

Well, if you make it just for yourself, then it would be okay. Like painting your own Enterprise-E picture and hanging it on your wall. One the other hand if you were to mass produce the starship model / painting... and either selling them or distributing them for free... then you may find yourself with several "hot dates" with CBS / Paramount lawyers.
Yeah i've no interest in profiting from the venture. And I remember there being company that did them. I'm just wondering if anyone had done it and could give me pointers before I start blindly emailing 3d printing companies.
the 3dprint for pay companies often keep the models...which CBS/paramount also would not like so even asking an a public company could get them and you in trouble. not only with CBS and friends but also with cryptic and pwe. since oyu would need access to the game assets...or the company you hired would OR have to completely create a duplicate from existing models...yeah, you run into some issues using a public company.
duplicating their assets, even at the higher resolutions required (for a good 3d print a one to one duplication would be pretty jagged, you'd want to up the resolution ) could still allow a few lawsuits aimed at the company you hired. best option would be to buy your own 3d printer and do it entirely yourself. even a small bed printer would allow you to make pieces if you wanted a large model you could put together after all the parts are printed.
you'd have to learn some basics of 3d modeling though...it is a shame their plan fell through...so much easier to have someone else do all the work and you just buy the finished product without any worry.

replicating even once from copyrighted sources is enough to get you into trouble since you went to the trouble of replicating such material and could be seen as a prelude to mass production, to "test the waters" as it were. Doesn't matter if it's the first time or the 300th time, without approval before hand, making your own copy is risky enough as it is.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
