Gorkon - A bad word ?

Good Afternoon Star Trek: Online Developers,

Question, why is the starship name Gorkon prohibited ? I have for several months attempted to name my Excelsior Class Starship USS Gorkon (NCC-40512), and the name Gorkon will not be accepted. A message appears: "The field contains restricted words". Is this an error ? Would you all correct this ? I would like to name my starship the Gorkon.

I understand why the starship name Enterprise is being restricted, to some degree. I have also noticed that the starship name Defiant is also restricted.

Thank You !

Could be the reason why. It's already the class name of a Klingon Science ship.

I am very aware of who Chancellor Gorkon was and his contribution to Federation History. However, a Klingon Gorkon class ship does not seem to be enough to warrant a restricted word. I do see Excelsior is also a restricted word. However, the words (and ship class names) Galaxy, Ambassador, Constitution, Oberth, Cheyenne, and Akira for example are not restricted, so I tend to think that restricted class names is not the standard and this may be a long time error of some kind.

Could also be that it's the name of a ship in the TNG book series. I.K.S. Gorkon: A Good Day To Die.

You likely won't get an answer on this from anyone official.
It's verboten, evident by you not being able to choose it. A bunch of guesses why, but none of that matters. That's it.

Yeah, I'm just guessing. I'd go with the ship name from the book series or science ship one as best guesses on it.

Flipping through a translator, Gorkon translates as Gorkon in every language for it.

The only translation I can find is with it broken down into certain components. Go r kon which translates from japanese as you r crowded.

So best guess is because of the ship name in both the TNG book series and/or the ship class name, like Enterprise or Defiant, it's locked out due to lore usage.

There's a list of character/ship names you can't use. this list is the same for both characters and ships.

There's an I.K.S. Gorkon mentioned in the Path to 2409, so they probably put it on the list to reserve it in case they wanted to use it in a story. It probably won't happen now, as we've moved on to the Bortasqu' as the prominent flagship, and have several other named ships for Klingons to keep up the variety.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

Maybe there isn't any logic behind which names are off-limits?

I don't know if Gorkon isn't allowed because it's a canon character name because Kahless was allowed when I last tried (I've had both an IKS & a USS Kahless before).

Gorkon was the name of the klingon cruiser in ST5. I think the names of all movie ships is restricted.

Most names that are ised in ST movies ar eprotected by copyright. Try using the name "Reliant" for your ship, or "Chang" for a name for your Klingon, You will see the same problem.

I myself have spent a considerable amount of money making an accurate Chang, but i was slightly dissapointed when I had to modify the name a little, in order for it to be acceptable.

My 'Chang' alt also has familiar Boffs, But instead of Gorkon, It's Gorkan, and Azetbur, has become Aze'bur.

I also Have a Khan flying a Reliant, again with a slight twist of the names.

The only starship named Gorkon in canon was a Federation Excelsior Class from TNG, the Gorkon from the movies was the Klingon Chancellor (from movie 6). The ship was Kronos One.

It's not movie-based, I tried Martok and was not allowed. curiously, Kahless worked just fine.

If you're an LTS with the Android BOFF, you can't call it Data but you can call it Lore.

USS Fearless NCC 14598. Used to ferry Kosinski and his assistant to the Enterprise to sort out ineffiencies in the Enterprise's warp core.

I have the ships name and the registry as well as the excelsior class ship.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

In real life many people and ships have the same name, the restrictions to already used names is pretty pointless.

There was a USS Gorkon in canon (that witch Admiral Necheyev's ship). You could spell it in the Klingon way and get around the restriction that way, i.e. USS ghorqon.

I think that's unlikely (as far as being a reason why we can't use a select few names from the IP). The issue with restricted names probably comes from Cryptic and/or CBS wanting to preserve several key names that have prominence in canon (if only to encourage players to think more creatively about their choice in ships and crews.) Take for example Voyager, Excelsior, and Enterprise (but not Saratoga, Intrepid, and Columbia.)

Gorkon apparently was included in that list. Okay, we can't use it, so move on.

You can't use it for the same reason I couldn't name my Dominion Dreadnought the "Weyoun". Certain names are just off limits.

You can’t name ships after certain characters or starships from canon for instance you can’t name your ship Enterprise.

Tried naming a ship USS Monitor, wouldn't let me do that either....yet I saw someone with a USS Heinrich Himmler out in sector space once.

Debating the objective qualities of the name filter is not productive. If you feel that someone has abused their ship name, report them to GM (right click, select appropriate option, provide info, submit.) Cryptic has not populated the restricted list with all offensive figures, personalities, words, idioms, or saucy references from the English language. Nor have they apparently restricted names for copyright reasons. Here are the following that I just tested:

    U.S.S. Galactica
    U.S.S. Long Shot
    U.S.S. Hull Zero Three
    U.S.S. Heart of Gold
    U.S.S. Elmo
    U.S.S. X-Wing
    U.S.S. Farscape
    U.S.S. Pillar of Autumn
    U.S.S. Yoda
    U.S.S. Frodo
    U.S.S. Harlan Ellison
    U.S.S. Sailor Moon
U.S.S. Yamato (also a Space Battleship)
    U.S.S. Duncan Idaho

It's worth at this point citing the Terms of Use:
16.4 You agree not to post, upload to, transmit, distribute, store, create or otherwise publish any of the following:

    c. User Content that may infringe any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other intellectual or proprietary right of any party. By posting any User Content, you represent and warrant that you have the lawful right to distribute and reproduce such User Content;

Cryptic is not responsible for ensuring that players don't use the names of other IP's (inside and out of the Star Trek Franchise) for ships, boffs, and for that matter character handles (see. me) in the main game. We certify that ourselves by agreeing to the TOU. If there's a problem, then we are wholly responsible for content abuse, not them.

So, the devs' restrictions are for the obvious expletives (although that returns a different error message than restricted names) and obvious names from intra-IP content that Cryptic didn't want players to use for their own reasons. What could they be? Well, maybe it's as simple as "they want us to be more creative." If approached honestly, that helps support the STO narrative and provides more space for personal investment (what we make is more our own).

(BTW, lock in Discovery now if you want to make a 25c equivalent, you never know when Cryptic might update the restricted list  )
