Do you have a naming scheme for your characters and/or ships?

azrael605azrael605 Member Posts: 11,135 Arc User
Like the title says. Do you set up the names of your characters, Boffs & ships according to a specidic scheme/theme?

For example my AoY character is named Eliott Spencer, his ship is the USS Nathan Ford, his Boffs include Cmdr. Alec Hardison, these names are all references to the TV series Leverage. Another character (my oldest, first creation) is named Charles Victor Strange, a reference to Professor X, Doctor Doom, & Dr. Strange. Yet another character (KDF) is named Gaheris Rhade & he flies the IKS Kodiac Pride, an Andromeda reference. Just curious what others come up with or if people just spam random :).

So far I've named my ships all after NPCs or zone from Final Fantasy XI and XIV (my character just being my XI/XIV character recreated as they were in those games), but clearly I'm fashioning them in a Star Wars theme. The ship in my banner is the V.S.D. Alisaie (V.S.D. standing for Victory Star Destroyer). My temporal captain also flies a S'ateth named V.S.D. Alphinaud. I also have a Bastion on my main account named I.S.D. Ascilia (the birth name of XIV's Minfilia). And if I can get ahold of the Vorgon carrier I'm so calling it S.S.D.... something. Likely A~.

I use the random name generator for when I haven't thought up a name for a character. Though I have done this. My first character is a Vulcan named Cheerwine, Fleet: Life of Leisure. But then...

how can you argue against it?

I generally name characters/toons after characters from my own universe, adapted to the Trek 'verse. I model my boffs after characters from assorted shows, as well as my original characters. As for ships, I largely name them after bands, songs, and Transformers. I sometimes also look to heroic figures from WW2 as well, such as Glenn Miller.

Then again, my own head-canon is a crossover of Transformers and G.I. Joe. with a hint of McHale's Navy, complete with temporal shenanigans! XD
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.

    Yes, but not just one.

For my science ships, I use the names of famous scientists - current ships in my roster include the USS Hawking, USS Turing and USS Feynman.

For my tactical ships, I use the names of military aircraft, with current examples including USS Vulcan, USS Valiant, USS Nighthawk, USS Blackbird, USS Victor and USS Valkyrie.

Each of my toons is just a general name but each toon has a convention for their ships. My main for example has all of her ships named for Sci Fi authors.

I don't have an established name list for a character that is connected to anyone famous on screen or about something on screen, not on STO with exception to one or two ships. I feel that it is somewhat lacking in imagination relying on using names of others to make up for it, i have always seen it like that.

These characters we create are special to us in our own way, they should stand out as such. I wouldn't go to the trouble by creating a human character called Tyr Anasazi and his companions are an alien gen character called Bortus and a Vulcan character called Selar. I like to see what people come up with in their own ways, own characters and their unique backstories.

My main has the USS Fearless, redesignated registry number due to a major overhaul of that ship that served during the mid-24th century, in effect it's a brand new ship.
Others have the IKS Kyrixix, USS Bajor, RRW Hakeev*, RRW Qo'nos, USS Esperence, USS Ferenginar, IKS Pirate, USS Moskva...

*Hakeev is a fictional character, techincally not apart of anyone famous.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.

Many of my ships are named after actual ships -Royal Navy (Swiftsure, Warspite, ..etc) and some famous ships like the ghost ship Mary Celeste. I also sometimes use mythical beast names (Wendigo, Manticore). My normal bridge officers (aside from away team members) no longer have actual names. I have a number to keep them in order on the roster and then the class (Tac, Eng, or Sci) along with a rank (Cmd, LtCmd, ...etc) the higher the rank the better the skills (like lockbox skills and such). So like this...

    01 Tac Cmd
    02 Tac LtCmd
    03 Eng Cmd
    04 Eng LtCmd
    05 Eng Lt
    06 Sci Cmd
    07 Sci LtCmd

My away team members all have names. I typically use Nelen Exil and left his name unchanged, I use the a female lifetime android and named her Android 19. I also have the Kelvin timeline Android and named him Android 18. I dressed up my photonic officer in a hearld uniform, made him as big as possible and named him Herald Defiler. My diplomatic tactical Orion chick is named Cleopatra. I have a few other named officers that I use on away teams, but I generally stick with the ones I named.

Well... I have a Romulan named Saria, and all of her ships are Zelda references, IE Farore (Mogai), Dodongo (D'Deridex), Volvagia (Breen Rezreth)...

My Orion has a few named after Kilrathi ships, although she does have a Kamarag Retrofit named after Prince Thrak'hath himself.

Generally I don't have any joke names or names that wouldn't actually fit a starship. Although... I do have a Pilot Escort on my main with as much cyan on the hull as possible and Chroniton Beams that I named USS Rainbow Dash. It was one of those "Had to do it" ships. Only other "joke" ship I have is a T5 Excelsior named USS Gaseous Anomaly, loaded with every possible gas venting ability I can put on her.

    Some yes, some no.

My main, named for me (he said modestly), flies ships named for famed scientists, mostly Human (except the T'planahath), and often in the field of neurology. About a year ago, he upgraded from the Tier 5 Prototype Odyssey USS Hans Asperger to the Tier 6 Yorktown-class science cruiser USS Lorna Wing.

I also have a Klingon Starfleet officer, K'tang, who (thanks to a randomly-generated first ship name) turns out to be a huge fan of old Earth prog rock, particularly Rush. That first ship was the USS Syrinx; every ship since has had a name derived from a Rush song (the Snowdog, the Tom Sawyer, and so forth). When he gets a T6 ship, it will be named USS Rocinante.

In a sense. There is a trend in my ship names across my account, though it's fairly broad; I tend to use names of people and places I like from other series such as Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z), Prim Fiori (Kuroinu), ect.

Individual characters often have names from a specific source, though.

For Feds I use historical ship names or ship names from Star Fleet Battles. Occasionally I pick a name for the politicall incorrectness of it, such as USS Manifest Destiny for a T6 Galaxy-X.

Characters are mostly either named after me or one of my WoW characters (the exception being my fed klink engineer, no idea where I got his name from).

Boffs are either named after my wife and kids or random NPCs that make a good impression on me.

For ships I'm all over the place. My AoY character is meant to be a proud military man, so his ship is the U.S.S. Tun Tavern, named after the birthplace of the USMC. My earlier mentioned fed Klingon is in a T6 Sovereign that I got not long after WoW launched Legion, him being a proud warrior I named his ship the U.S.S. Varian Wrynn after someone who was KIA in the launch event for Legion. My original main I can't remember what his ship is called, he's in a T6 Excalibur though. Have not figured out what I'm going to call my new TNG themed alt's ship, I just know it's going to be a Galaxy-X.

I have naming conventions for the ships, but not the Boff's.
My Fed Sci Officer usually has ships names based on the concept of researcher. Things like Scryer, Discovery, Explorer, Researcher and such. My Fed Engineer takes what ever name is randomly generated. My Fed Tactical officer has all the his ships named after the last names I have found in my Family Tree. My Klingon Engineer has weapons named translated to Klingon, usually. Lots of others have either historical ship names, or names based on the ship class name. None are joked based at all.
Federation: Fleet Admiral Zombee (Alien Tactical)::Fleet Admiral Danic (Vulcan Science)::Fleet Admiral Daniel Kochheiser (Human Engineer)
KDF: Dahar Master Kan (Borg Klingon Tactical)::Dahar Master Torc (Alien Science)::Dahar Master Sisteric (Gorn Engineer)
RR-Fed: Citizen Sirroc (Romulan Science)::Fleet Admiral Grell (Alien Engineer)
RR-KDF: Fleet Admiral Zemo (Reman Tactical)::Fleet Admiral Xinatek (Reman Science)::Fleet Admiral Bel (Alien Engineer)

I've had kind of a theme with my main ships. My Fed main has the Vindicator, my KDF character has the Devastator, my science character has the Judicator, and my Romulan has the Instigator.

This theme broke down when the best I could come up with for my temporal recruit was the Penetrator.

My character's aren't normally named after anything, and only somewhat have a consistent format style (All Caitians, for instance, are named with an apostrophe after a single syllable; M'rearr, Si'kar, Ka'ashi.)

My ships are usually named after whatever I happen to enjoy, usually referencing some media,
U.S.S. Kritzkrieg (Team Fortress 2), or named after whatever a friend will tell me, I.R.W. Trillium (Flower).

The ship name scheme is consistent on one character. The Trillium, for instance, is on the character whose ships are all named after flowers (Thinking of Bluebell next).

My main has ships named after the Warrior Cats series of fantasy books that I read a long time ago (Main is also a Caitian, so it fits) Ships like U.S.S. Cinderpelt, U.S.S. Whitestorm, C.D.S. Leafpool, C.D.S. Firepaw. Shuttles are always ended in the suffix -paw, because they're small.

      I like cats.

I've only named four of my 14 Characters. The rest were system generated. Same thing with Boffs, with two exceptions. If I create an Aliengen Vorta, they are named Loriss. Once I named the LTS Android Andrea.

KDF and Romulan ships I let the system generate names and I select. Federation ships I normally name after things 'Forbidden Planet' related:

      Bellerophon
      Krell
      Adamantine
      JJ Adams
      Ostro
      Farman
      Gorgon
