What “level” DOFF are you?!

Hi everyone. I just made Captain and as such came to the realization that a Captain works hard to recruit the best crew. So, I set out to revamp my Duty Officers. I got to the exchange to purchase new crew members; however, I couldn’t tell the difference between a common doff and a rare one. What’s the trick? I must be missing something. Also, it seems like you can get new bridge officers that are better than the crew you began the game with. That’s true, right? I clearly did not fuss over my crew until now. If I can replace them, I probably will feel sad. We’ve been through so much together. Anyway, is replacing them worth it if possible? I’ve also heard there’s a difference in performance between genders. Is that true? I want to be the same strong, authorative yet gentle woman of Captain Janeway so of course I’m a female avatar. I certainly wouldn’t mind be surrounded by men in uniform but is that the best strategy? Thanks guys!

Doffs on the exchange are sorted by rarity. Common to very rare with a few ultra rare and such. Anything above rare or blue level and you will be paying a lot of ec. Doffs slotted to your active roster become bound and cannot be traded again. But each diff can boost skills and effects of powers in space and ground.
Boffs can also be bought and most are pretty cheap. There is no real difference for most boffs between male and female. There are a few boffs that have special abilities. If you get Romulan boffs it can add to crit chance. Kremin boffs reduce the cool down on powers. Those boffs have to be bought at fleet holdings and cost lots of fleet credits and dilithium.

Also, if you don't want to get rid of your crew, you can always 'upgrade them.'

Say you have a Human Male Bridge Officer that's been in your crew from the beginning and you want to keep him, but he's a common (white) quality officer and you want to upgrade him to a Very Rare (Purple) variant. We'll call this guy.. Ted.

First go to the Uniform Officer on Earth Space dock, where you go to change what you're wearing. Click on the Bridge Officer tab, select Ted and save his outfit. This will be used to copy his appearance.

Next, go to the Exchange, and look for a replacement. On the left side, select Bridge Officer and change the Rarity filter to Very Rare. Lets say Ted is a Tactical Officer, just type in the search 'Human Tactical Bridge Officer' or you could actually even just type 'Tactical' if you wanted. Make sure you're set on Bridge Officer and Very Rare and search. All the results will be Very Rare bridge officers. Scroll through until you find a human male and purchase that officer. At this point, you can remove all gear from 'Ted' and discharge him. Remember to remove gear first, anything on him when you discharge him is gone for good.

Find your new Officer, and rename him 'Ted.' Now go over to the Uniform guy, select Ted under Bridge Officers and select 'Load Outfit.' Load the saved look and apply it to your new guy and bam.. Ted is now a Very Rare officer.

You can make sure you're buying Rare or Very Rare duty officers simply by setting the filter on the exchange. Hope this helps you.
    Insert witty signature line here.

I grind "A Fistful of Gorn" on Nimbus III to get personnel boxes that typically rewards blue or very rare random Doffs from my experience. The first time you complete the mission you get "Law"; a very rare projectile weapons officer. With practice, the mission can be completed within 15 minutes.
First go to the Uniform Officer on Earth Space dock, where you go to change what you're wearing. Click on the Bridge Officer tab, select Ted and save his outfit. This will be used to copy his appearance.

There is currently a bug in the tailor, outfits are not actually save when the "Save Outfit" button is clicked.

The difference between otherwise identical doffs of different rarity is that higher ranks have a more powerful version of the skill. They'll have the same description, but if you look at the mechanics it will say "10% chance" instead of 5%, or whatever.

Also they make a difference for the engineering/research types that you use to build and upgrade gear getting a higher crit chance based on their tier.

Wow! Thank you all so much for the tips and tricks! I really appreciate it. You all have helped make navigating around my crew much easier. This game is so much fun, right? I remember watching reruns of TOS, TNG, and DS9 with one of my foster fathers. He loved Star Trek so much and I assimilated that love. See what I did there?

Often the purple is only marginally better than the blue but costs way more.
