Thank you for taking the time to read this. My situation is this: I have phasers and other ship components in my inventory that are not equipped on any ship. At the exchange, I am unable to sell them. When hovering over the item within the inventory panel, the pop up window says they are bound to account or character. I do not understand how they are bound. More importantly I do not understand how to un-bound them so I may sell them, which will free up valuable inventory space. Can someone please help?

With that said, unless you put the item in protected mode, they can be sold to any vendor, or just get rid of them in the replicator. There are a few items in the game that you can't sell as they don't show up in the list when selling stuff, if you definitely don't want those, just fight-click and discard.
Be aware that there are items which are bind on pick up which means as soon as you accept the item it is bound to your character or your account. An example would be mission story rewards where unique items are bound to characters on pick up.
Bound items can never be unbounded.
Almost every other MMO I've ever played functioned the same exact way.
Yeah, SOP for MMOs. Now I can understand it in worlds with magic, items binding to a user; but makes no sense in a technology one. And even less sense that some of our doffs are bound to our captains till they die!
