There's nothing more annoying then when getting a new ship and then going to space to set abilities to the hotkey tray when all available abilities are already randomly set all over it.
Yeah, its the most time consuming thing; getting your trays the way you want them. They should just BE empty when you activate a new ship. Who programmed it to just toss random powers everywhere?
Tip: don't clear anything at all. I never do: I just pick the ones from the list, and dump them over whatever is already there. Since I use almost 3 full bars anyway (or sometimes even more), setting my slots is not an 'incredibly time consuming' endeavor.
Because when you have hundreds of abilities it gets confusing which one you have or haven't already added to the tray while the same ability may already be present. However a better solution to what I am saying is that the ability tray should be clear upon the first time usage of a ship.
And then, some players would complain that "GRAAAAAAAAH! All my carefully-slotted abilities are now fully gone because I pressed the wrong button before saving my loadout! Who would even want a "clear all" button that is too easily accessible?!".
How about give us the ability to set some default slots, which would cover the first chunk of abilities. We have so many abilities that are available to any ship we fly, and it would be nice to have a consistent preset.
ie, I can set Evasive Maneuvers to slot 2, and whenever I get a new ship, that's where it'll be.
Building your tray loadouts is indeed an art form. I eliminate a lot of my troubles with a keybind file, so a lot of my repeatedly used powers are called automatically from the 7th, 8th, and 9th rows. I drop the powers I want to use in there and then fill the visible portions of my trays with manual clickies. My science ship does require I use the vertical trays all the way on the right to get all of the clickys in.
