Will Boffs use set powers (reliably)?

djf021djf021 Member Posts: 1,382 Arc User
My newest character can't decide between the Maco ground set and the Temporal Defense ground set (I know, those are very different, but there's a method to my madness). I'm thinking about getting BOTH, and just trying them out. If I do, I'll just throw one set on one of my boffs. Would the boff use the set powers? For example, if Temporal set is equipped, would the boff use "Temporal Stasis"?

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Away team do use set powers reliably... it's just that it takes them alot longer to use abilities in general than a player. I routinely go camp Nimbus for lockbox farming and you can set your watch to how long it takes them to use abilities.

Boffs don't do anything reliably. But yes, they do use the clicky powers.

When it comes to Boffs, I use the 2 piece Na'kuhl Temporal Operative. Shield and body. They're a passive buff. Very reliable.

They are also quite good at wasting consumables. I lost a lot of Dosi Rotgut once because I forgot I had placed it on a Boff (to avoid Tribbles consuming it all).

I'm just happy if my Boffs can make it through doorways...

Yep, same here. I try to give 'em ultra rare weapons with the [CritD]x2 [CrtH]x2 modifiers most of the time with the intent of upgrading them to epic at a later date. All Boffs also gets a Kelvin Timeline Tribble except for Klingons since Tribbles don't like them.

They are also quite good at wasting consumables.

The only consumable I give my Boffs are Large Hypo since they do not use them like candy. A stack of 20 can last a while... though sometimes when I revive a downed Boff after combat, he / she would immediately use a hypo.

And now I'm tempted to get a new BOFF and name him Luis. "PILLS HERE! Grabbing pills..."

In my experience, they just randomly hit any devices you've given them.

Hilarios if you give them party poppers. :D

I know how to disable their use of BOff powers, and how to select their use when I want them. (It's made Cover Shield functional for me.) But I don't know how to control set powers. Can you equip an item then have the BOff hold ot until you want it active?

So true. I laughed out loud on that one. Occasionally I actually have to give a Boff waypoints to navigate around the edge of a door. :D

Not that I am aware of. I even tried to go to the Boff's character sheet, right click on a Tribble and click use... the Boff does nothing.

Asking an AI from a game to do something reliable... *chuckles* The only true reliable AI I've seen so far is the AI in Quake on highest difficulty. They're extremely reliable at finding and headshotting you, especially if you're on the other side of the map.

It's also quite fun to watch them run around spraying a fire extinguisher everywhere instead of shooting at the enemy, only to then spray the room with fire from their auto rifle after the last enemy is dead.
    LTS and loving it.

    Yeah.

Basically, if you want combat effectiveness, you give them a tribble, a horta and whatever spare long-cooldown or conditional nonconsumable combat devices you couldn't fit on your own person (ie, things they can't spam at nothing). A frequency remodulator only while they're fighting borg.

If you want laughs, you give them party poppers, fire extinguishers, bugspray, etc that they will proceed to make complete clowns of themselves with, every time an enemy comes in view.

Well, actually they use up the Large Shield Charges at a much faster rate than hypos.

You should try giving them power cells and watch them go through a stack of 20 in a single mission. My BOFF's use the shield charges a little slower, but you DO need to make sure they have rank appropriate shields, highest mark possible. The weaker the shield they have the faster they will use the charges. All my boffs have Very Rare quality shields, and Very Rare Polyweave Armor, both MkXII or higher. They also all have Valesquez rare quality tribbles that add 2.0% damage. Its now rare for one of them to fie in any given ground mission. Also make sure to equip them with a decent weapon, 150 DPS+.

On the subject of BOFF's I have found that people do not choose who they take on their away team carefully enough. Its best to balance the entire team (including yourself) so that the classes are spread.

For example, I am a Tac officer on my main, so I have just one other Tac BOFF with me, but two engineers and a science officer. As a fed, the first thing I did was get rid of the default BOFF's given by the game, and replaced them with custom BOFF's from the exchange. (I wanted an all Bajoran Away team, so went and bought 4 Bajoran BOFF's off the exchange).

I only give my boffs the small hypos and shield charges. Not paying big bucks for their overuse! ;)

And as for rezzing hologram boffs... sometimes it's hard to find their mobile emitter on the ground! :D At least real crew leave a corpse.

I did that in the past, and yes, i admit it's quite hilarious to witness your otherwise serious-looking BOFF suddenly litter Kobali Prime with balloons, firecrackers, and candy fishes... Completely immersion-breaking, naturally XD

I happened upon a purple Beta Zed science BOff and, needing a medic, I trained her up and brought her in...

She prefers to engage at melee range with psionics first before opening up with an overcharged plasma pulsewave rifle. Violent little Beta Zed. So I gave her the Bathlet from Collisseum and let her go.

It would be nice if you could choose an AI for your BOffs.Having the ability to choose between ranged attack and melee attack would go a long way, but it might also be nice to have Medic which focuses on healing your crew and Grenadier which uses items and powers first.

I've always found that Alien Female Engineer (normal rarity) does very well in that capacity, using items and powers first, then running round to revive anyone who passes out :sunglasses:

Don't EVER give them Bateret Incense Sedative. I once equipped a few on a Boff and they were literally gone in a few seconds. I could just see/hear the effect going off continuously on the Boff when we beamed down before I could react. Lol. Junkies!!!

the boff ais might use some/most devices as soon as they can and forgo any sort of planning.

I just love it when one of my Away Team uses the Ophidian Cane on a T-Rex in the Voth Ground Battlezone. :)

When it comes to Boffs I typically have 2 science, 1 engineer and 1 tactical. Though two of my characters have 2 engineers, 1 science and 1 tactical. When it comes to doing the Voth Ground Battlezone which only allows 2 Boffs, I always have 1 science and 1 engineer regardless of the character's career.

Science - Med Tricorder I & II, Cold Fusion Flash III, Hyperonic Radiation II
Engineer - Sabotage I, Minefield II, Explosive Drone III, Quantum Mortar II

    Standard gear are as follows:
    - Ultra Rare Na'khul Armor Mk XIV
    - Ultra Rare Na'khul Shield Mk XIV
    - Ultra Rare Plasma Wide Beam Rifle Mk XIV
    - 40 Large Hypos (Each Boff typically only use at most 3 of them by the time the V-Rex are dead.)
    - Kelvin Timeline Tribble; except for Klingons since tribbles do not like them.
