Building Defiant

pryor#5476 pryor Member Posts: 567 Arc User
OK just made Captain Rank, got me a Defiant class ship, now I need some MKVIII Heavy Cannons, where can I get them? Do I need to buy them, do I need to take a certain mission and kill some ships to get them?
Please tell me what to do, also need to obtain Transwarp so I can start going to Dilithum mines in Beta quadrant

Honestly? Use whatever drops and mission rewards you find and don't worry about making a solid build until you reach 50 and finish your reputations. That's also when you get Transwarp. As for the dilithium mines, you should be able to access those now. You'll need an EV suit to do that activity, though.

    For now, enjoy the journey.

Honestly I'd say builds more complex then "what's avaible thru missions/drops" are for end game content there's few if any missions I couldn't do with random mission gear or drops and patience as long as that gear is semi-close to to my level.

When you reach higher level you will see all your drops of MKXII..... Thats the good stuff. I will also give ya a bit if info i wish i would of had

The game gets kinda stuck between mission sets sometimes. If you've finished the Installation 18 mission, you may need to hail the next mission giver manually. You can do that from the Episodes tab of the mission log. Just hit the bottom button on the left side of the minimap and scroll around a bit. It's been a while since I played that part of the storyline, but I think you'll be doing the Romulan Mysteries missions next.

As for weapons, I agree with the other posters: don't get too hung up on gear until you're higher level and settled in a tier 5 ship you'll be using for the long term. Players usually outfit endgame ships with mission rewards (later story missions give out some good sets), reputation rewards, or gear purchased through fleets. Whatever you pick up now is likely to be replaced with better gear relatively soon.

Well, Mk XIV is level 50 gear. There's a lot of places to get that, once you can equip it. To get a piece of gear to Mk XIV, you need to buy Mk XII gear and some tech upgrades and start upgrading them. Or you can buy the gear at the rank you want off the exchange, but it's likely to be costly.

the jorney is not being enjoyed as all my charactors are all stuck on Installation 18 now, no more missions coming in, dead in the water until that gets fixed or i get Transwarp

Installation 18 is a ground mission on Nimbus III. What's giving you problems there?

If you go to the Episodes tab where you pick up missions, there should be an option under Installation 18 to skip the mission, which should open up the next Arc.

As for the alarm consoles, sometimes you have to be standing in just the right spot. In my case, I usually have to stand practically on top of them.

You still need to be level 50 before you can use Transwarp.

All the coil does is gives you more transwarp destinations. And it's consumable, so each coil can only be used once. I also consider it a waste of dil as you get a ton of transwarp destinations once you reach level 50 and complete reputations.

As for Communications Shutdown, destroy satellites, destroy freighters, don't worry about the optional objective. He gets to die in battle like a good Klingon. You may have to manually click the satellites to target them.

Edit: I take that back. I was thinking of the ability that gives you a boost in Sector space. You already have one Transwarp to Sol. The coil might give you the ability to get to other places, but I still wouldn't waste dil on it. You can just travel to the Alpha Quadrant. If you bring up your map and look on the left side, you'll see arrows along the edge. Click on that and you will start traveling toward that edge. Once there, you'll be given the option to travel to the Alpha Quadrant. Once you're there, select Deep Space 9 or the Vulgata Mine Field on the map (depending on which one you want to go to) and your ship will travel there.

    1 - Open character screen.
2 - Swap out your armor for the EV suit.
    3 - Close character screen.
4 - Click the EV suit icon above the action bar to activate it.
    5 - Wait a few seconds.
6 - Click the "mining" button to transfer to the surface of the asteroid.

    Does that work for you?

As for gear, you can replay old missions to get both ground and space gear. Not sure how after you have progressed, but generally speaking, I believe that all missions prior to the Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc will only reward you with Mk XI gear; even if you are max level. The exception are the missions in the Yesterday's War story arc which are actually very recent missions. Beginning with the Solanaei Dyson Sphere story arc you should receive Mk XII gear. There are missions in the Delta Quadrant story arc that will reward Mk XIII, but only on the first playthrough; if you discard / sell that Mk XIII gear you can no longer get it again.

If your character is from the 23rd Century / a.k.a. AoY character (meaning you started the game in the TOS era), then the Battle of Caleb IV is a good source for ship gear and ground gear. Everything Old Is New is another mission that has good space gear; in fact the mods on those gear are better than the mods on the gear from the Battle of Caleb IV. However, Everything Old is New mission takes a bit longer to complete.

The Core of the Matter (from the Yesterday's War story arc) gives you an option to select the Neutronium-Laced Combat Armor or one of several pistols; you can only pick one of them each time you complete the mission. They should be free to upgrade to Mk XII if you have the armor or any of the weapon from a previous playthrough at a lower level. The armor is pretty decent and should be fine for a while.

Generally starting at around level 56 you really want to start understanding the upgrade process. When your character is above level 50 enemies start to become harder. It does not become apparent to me until level 56. Once your character is at level 60, then enemies will be at their full potential. You can get by with very rare Mk XII weapons when you are level 60, but you will find it to be very challenging which means it can take a long time before you win a space battle (ground is pretty easy). The general recommendation is to use very rare Mk XIV gear when you are max level. Weapons and tactical console should be pushed to Mk XIV first with all other gear next. Upgrading gear to ultra rare and especially epic quality can be extremely expensive and you need a lot of luck on your side.

for crying out loud, been flying around Galaxy for an hour looking for PVP to start........... nothing.......
there's 0 "world PvP" in STO as far as I know only queues and even those are more or less dead.

  • bonzodog01bonzodog01 Member Posts: 147 Arc User
Yeah, PvP is dead in STO. STO has become more or less about the doing the storylines, ranking up reputations, and getting the best ships and gear. After that, its onto another character.

As for me, I got myself a T6 defiant, with the T3 retrofit (part of the federation discount pack that also comes with Delta flyer, T1 NX, and jupiter uniforms). That also gave me the quantum torps console and the phaser quad cannons.
