Chasing Wild 'Torgs'
@Tony: Both Memory Alpha and Beta assume that the Torg in The Search for Spock was killed on the bridge of the Enterprise when the Klingon boarding party he led just discovered that Kirk and his crew had left and set the ship to auto-destruct. So it's more likely that the Torg in STO is just another Klingon with the same name, which has happened in Trek before. Example: there are two different Worfs, the "not a merry man" son of Mogh we all love from TNG and DS9, as well as the one from The Undiscovered Country who served as Kirk and McCoy's defense lawyer before those two were sent to Klingon prison on Rura Penthe. The Star Trek VI Worf is even supposedly the grandfather of the TNG one, which makes sense, since they're both played by Michael Dorn. So maybe the Star Trek III Torg is the grandpappy of STO's Torg?
Strangely enough, there are also two Rodeks currently in STO: the-General-formerly-known-as-Kurn one played by Tony Todd, as well as one that's a prison guard at Rura Penthe, who fought against KDF players in one of those early missions in support of a conspiracy plot we later learn is headed up by none other than...Torg.
What are your thoughts on the new Star Trek Online featured episode “Brushfire”?
MARTOK!!!!! My blade stands ready to fight at your side!
The mission is exactly as advertised: we go to a Son'a prison, meet Martok, and break him out while fighting Torg and his cronies; it works! J.G. Hertzler's voice in particular brought back all those DS9 memories and put a smile on my face.
I can't help but feel though like "Brushfire" was more of a setup to something else (*cough* Dominion expansion *cough*) than a full story in of itself. 'Rodek's' personal stuff was dealt with waaaay too quickly, as well as Martok's current status in the Klingon Empire; both were treated as an afterthought despite being the focus of weeks of story blogs. Kinda disappointing.
While I haven't played "Brushfire" yet (oh, Summer Event now past, how well did we enjoy thee....), and my thoughts on Torg have already been posted by tylermaxwell above, I do want to comment on another topic touched on during the episode that seems to come up quite a bit.
In regards to the Star Trek/Star Wars rivalry that has been going on since the two franchises came into existence, I would note that all too often, fans forget that both helped shape the era of science fiction we enjoy today. We dream bigger dreams, we think more about our sci-fi, and we care about the possibilities out there more than we ever have, thanks to both of these. We are all much better off because we've had both of these than we would have been with either alone. There is no reason we can't enjoy both for what they are, and the different concepts brought up by each.
Thanks again for all your hard work on keeping us up to date on everything Star Trek!
