I'm thinking about re-installing the game. I have the original game discs from launch. Is it worth installing the old game and then just updating via the launcher? If I grab the game via the site do you I have to install the arc launcher or can I just have the STO launcher?

The disc is the only way to have Star Trek Online Launcher by itself.
Any other sites, such as Arc requires you to have the Arc Client. I got the game via Steam, which requires me to use the Steam Client.
I also have the original disc, you can install using the disc then just patch. No 3rd programs required.
Also the old Beta screenshots during the install setup are really fun to watch!
Just FYI, this isn't true.
Both Steam and Arc both are just overlays for Star Trek Online. There is nothing from either program that is installed with Star Trek Online. You can use Steam or Arc to download the game and then keep the install folder, completely remove Arc/Steam and the game will function as a stand alone launcher.
You can also install with Steam or Arc, and just run the game out of the folder without launching Steam/Arc. You can use this method if you ever lose the disks or just want to download the game without having to use physical media.
[Edit:] You can also download the standalone launcher by clicking here.
