Oh dear :( Thanks for the update, though :) If only there was trading graphs and charts available which could be followed like the real stock exchange :D

What this game needs is Buy/Sell orders, like in EvE Online. :) EvE also keps excellent price charts of about every item you could buy.

Yeah...I play in a korean MMO that does that. STO does not need this. This playerbase doesn't even understand simple economics...you want them to run the exchange like an actual commities market and have this playerbase understand?!? Bad idea...just bad idea.
But how would it hurt? The exchange is essentially a separate game to the ships and the pew pew pew, so the people who understand it, might get a kick out of some mobile-trading, those who don't, or who only go to the exchange to get their first TR-116B (Oh how I remember that proud day) will just carry on with what they're doing, and treat the exchange like a store, rather than a revenue stream :)

People alreaqdy accuse certain other people of cornering markets using the simple exchange. Of they did what meimei actually wanted to, they really COULD corner markets and price gouge. There is a reason why commities markets have limits and rules in place. Even in the korean MMO, they have such things to keep it from spiraling out of control. And that game learned to put such things in place after the market went off the deep end into unusable by anyone not gaming the market bad. So yes, lots of things can go wrong with this idea if a few people knows how these things all work and abuse the hell out of it because you just unleashed an unregulated commities market. And to make it even worse, we have a base of currecny source that is completely ignorant of even basic economics (the korean MMO actually has a much higher standard of education for example...and it still ended badly). It would be a bloodbath. Bad idea...just bad idea.
That's actually the way stock exchanges operate though. It's like that old saying, 'If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen' ;) Like I said to meimei, the exchange, That, is the Real PvP. If someone wants to get into the game of listing their goods for one ec less than the next person, then that's exactly what they're doing: Player vs Player. The real fun, is when they try and do it and go below a certain point, and it's then more beneficial to just buy their item to take it from them, and repost theirs and yours, for the price you want. That's what a stock exchange is. It's not a nicey-nicey swap meet with light refreshments and raktajino. It's a place where brokers do vast amounts of ketracel to Stay Sharp and then have coronaries on the exchange floor :D:D Anyone off the turnip-truck naively thinking they're just going to set up their stall, sell their goods and just go home? They'll be selling their shirts to pay for a cab home if they're not careful, or sitting in Captain Brott's cargo bay, using their finger to power an antique gramophone :D:D

As I was saying, anyone who uses the exchange as a store (where prices can and will change) they're not going to be bothered about an app, and probably not even with the prices (so long as they can afford them) it would only be used by those who really want to play the exchange and PvP it, and even they (I would hope) would understand that stuff still needs to be sold at appropriate prices. Slapping a high price on something is no guarantee of a sale, and pricing everything out of people's reach or willingness to pay, just results in a false-high and stagnation. I wouldn't, for example, try and list a Mirror Escort for 4M and expect it to sell. I definitely wouldn't buy all the Mirror Ecorts below that price and then list them all at that price, because the average buyer (and that's who we have to price to) will just think 'Eff that, I'll get something else.' Cornering can work in the short-term. The very short term (requiring that total attention or it's blink and miss it) but gouging, that's just being uncool, and can only last for as long as the person is willing to pay that price.

When I first looked at Vaadwaur anchor drones, they were selling at a couple million. I picked a few up, but then found out that that had been some spike, and in the end, I was chucking them away at about 10k just to free up the space (awesome little drones though, I'd highly recommend anyone who plays engineer and likes ground combat to pick one up) The exchange, I've found, finds an equilibrium pretty quickly. Those Normal reward packs for doing red alerts, they cycle pretty much over twenty four hours.

I've seen you mention this badass Korean mmo a few times, what is it?

Stock markets actually has rules and regulations. Many, MANY rules and regulations. They also have usage fee...even if you trade directly with the market instead of going through a broker to prevent trade churns that you mentioned. If they wanted to make the exchange work like a commoties market or a stock market...like EXACTLY how those run, with all the rules and limits and usage fees...sure it could work. It would add a giant complexity to the game, but it could work. I HIGHLY doubt you would be exactly happy with that however...unless you think having a second job that doesn't pay anything is any fun...especially since you could have done the same thing in the real world and made 100s of thousands doing the same thing in the real world.
Oh for sure, many regulations, and that likely wouldn't work here. As for would I object to some fees, I've always had the attitude 'it costs what it costs', and that I can either afford something or not, and if I can't, I either save, or let it go. So I'd say that depends on the fee. As per Warren Buffet's maxim, I only ever aim for 12% profit on a deal. So a 10% fee, that would eat into my profits enough that, while I would still use the exchange to buy, and for the lols of trading, I definitely wouldn't consider it a way to build an ec balance to be able to get the nice stuffz.

But, as I mentioned on the other thread, if that fee comes from in-game resources, Cryptic wouldn't be able to benefit from it, so I can't see why they would actually do it. And I can't see them risking making it a cash-fee (although I guess in-game purchases may occur :D ) or, making the act of posting to the exchange, a subscriber-only privilege, as I suspect that would lead to too much of a 'this and them' mentality between those who can post items, and those who can't, which would be bad for the community. Cryptic needs to keep people happy in the game, so they need to keep things simple, not give people too many hoops to jump through ;)

And as you say, why just do it in game for free, when it can be done in the real world for real money. The real difference, is that not everyone has the spare $25'000 minimum to get into day trading, which makes it a Rich Man's game, rather than one any minimum wage TRIBBLE could pick up as means of a side-hustle (or how it should be, transition their income streams so the minimum wage becomes the side-hustle to have the spare cash for trade purchases :D 25'000 ec, on the other hand, that's achievable to any new player, meaning that the exchange is open to all :)
And the korean MMO is Black Desert Online. Very pretty game. Good luck getting competitive in that game. Or running it. The min graphics will run on most mid priced modern machines...and look about as good as STO on low setting. The next step up which looks actually pretty requires a giant jump in performance however. So don't go off their min spec. Their recommended spec is the actual min spec. And if you want to run this game on max...yeah...good luck with that. It's fun still.
Thanks for the name, I've just looked it up, and damn, that looks detailed :) I don't know why, but I had been envisaging some kind of Bladerunner-esque cyberpunk drama, with neon blue exchange holograms :D

You don't need 25k to get into day trading. My friend started with around 3 grand. He made enough in a year with that to get himself a Mercedes C63 AMG. Not too shabby to turn 3 grand into 78 grand (what it cost with options and taxes and fees). Even at min wage, you should be able to save up 3 grand unless you are living above your means. That is to say, you should be at home with your parents if you have a min wage job. However, doing this isn't easy. Or without risks. Or a whole slew of other issues. Now mind you, this get actually harder once you move on from that min wage job, get a real job (or two) and have a family to support and raise as time becomes a precious commidity in itself at this stage on one's life. And once the kids get their own real job, this becomes an option again.

Cryptic in NW already use astral diamonds (their version of refined dil) as their AH money. STO could go to that model as a way to monitize the exchange...but I hope not. I already mentioned one way where even a 1% fee could help cryptic make some extra money. It would slow down if not stop people using the exchange as a storage space and they may actually buy some slots. And really, this isn't really about making money...it's about control of ingame resources so the game ecomony doesn't get ruined even more. Or hell at a slower rate even.
    I'd read:
"The SEC (US Securities and Exchange Commission) has imposed restrictions on the day trading of US stocks and stock markets. The restrictions prevent "pattern day traders" from day trading US stocks unless the trader maintains an equity balance of at least $25,000 into their trading account. That means that to regularly day trade stocks in the US, you need at $25,000 of your own capital in your trading account." Source

Which was why I had that figure in mind :) And as you say, 3k isn't an unobtainable amount, Unless Life Responsibilities get in the way (and it always seems to find some emergency to throw up to keep flogging my wallet :D )

A 1% fee wouldn't be bad in terms of amount, but, my concern, is the currency it comes from. For a game marketed as F2P, monetizing with real-world currency, a significant aspect of the game, I don't think would be well received. A 5-10% ec fee, would definitely make players think twice about gouge-posting or using it as free storage, and would definitely turn the exchange into a pure place of commerce, rather than a PvP arena, but it wouldn't benefit Cryptic financially, so I just can't see them caring enough to do it :)

They just got done fixing the exchange and you people want them to wreck it again by punishing people for using it?

There is are ways around that 25k min limit. Like using trading sites. There is a fee associated with that of course...but there are ways around it.

And I did say the middle part of your life, it gets difficult. But if you have time to play stock trading online for the hours it would take for you make EC, you have time to apply that in real life and make real money. Min wage jobs should be held when you are living with your parents still so you can save up that money. If you have a real job and trying make your way in the world, you really shouldn't have enough free time to have a second job disguised as a game and still need money because if that was the case, you should have a second job. Like i said, this is something for young or old people who have time. But the thing is, you can do it in real life and get real money...or spend the same time in a game and get game money. I don't know about you, but if I was good enough at commities exchange and the stock market that I could make loads of money in a game of it, I would just rather do it in the real world and make loads of money. But yes, if you are at the get and raise a family part of your life, I suspect you do not have the time to do these things...but that would be true of the game version as well really.

As for the real benefit to cryptic bottom line...I alread said it's too late for that beyond some secondary selling of slots. It may keep the game going a bit longer maybe? But that is about it really.
That's what I'm doing ;) It's only recently, however, that I've had the completely disposable cash to make that decent initial buy-in :)

Since you ask about those who cannot afford to buy keys. I cannot afford to buy keys. There is simply no place in my budget for it. Yet just this year I have earned well over 1 billion EC entirely through in game resources. Now I chose not to buy one of the promo ships, instead getting several lockbox ships & a Lobi ship but I could have easily obtained a promo ship without spending a dime.

I wish everyone good luck who wants and plans to use the original Constitution ship. I don't see many in game so they really must be rare and limited.

For me personally, it is the only ship I really wanted out of this game. Consoles are nice, traits are fine and Lobi Crystal are cool; but having a high level Constitution class is Nirvana. at least for me.

I just was very lucky - as I got my T6 Constitution for 20-mil EC from buying a lock box form the Exchange!

    Thank you - RNG spirits!

Fish did that millions of years ago. That's why we are here today.

Honestly, if that's how life evolves, why don't we see any creature, great or small, making overtures from one iteration of its existence into another?

I also wonder about creatures, such as the bombardier beetle. That little bug is a living chemical weapons deployment platform. It mixes two chemicals in its body that when combined, become a fiery death bomb for its prey.

How in the world could a beetle evolve to do this? How many beetles died in the supposed attempt to attain this fantastic power of nature? How could any creature survive the supposed "experimentation" by nature, which is supposed to be a non-intelligent "force" by the way, in order to produce an organism that carries two fluids in its body that can not under any circumstances be allowed to mix inside the body of the beetle before it is ready to unleash its attack?

It staggers my mind to try and come up with a way this could happen in a truly Darwinian universe. Even if I give this form of Nature, as a proactive engine of Creation of the Fittest, how did Nature put the two chemicals into the body of the beetle in order for it to be able to bomb its prey with chemical fire? To think that this happens over time, even millions of years, gives Nature the power of foresight as the final product is the only viable result.

We did not come from fishes, or monkeys, or any proto-slime hit with a bolt of lightning. The number of iterations it would take to form the viable proteins from the amino acids is in the order of 10^40. And that would be just one protein. It is impossible.

You are not a meat suit. You are an immortal spirit that controls your body through the transceiver that is your brain. The world we live in is couched in a reality that is superior to this temporary universe. To exist as we do, requires a planet that is dialed in to the setting of life. Our planet is situated in a solar system designed to protect it and nourish it. The outer gas giants throw out tremendous gravitational fields that catch objects coming in to the plane of the ecliptic from other angles. The asteroid belt is the shield of the ecliptic so the earth does not take a direct hit from any object coming straight at us. The moon is at the perfect spot to drive our oceans. The other planets, stars, and our moon are there for lights to guide us through darkness. The sun is at the perfect distance from our planet to drive our atmosphere which sustains all plant and animal life. We have a barrier around us to block all deadly forms of cosmic radiation. We have laws of physics that are designed to sustain us through fail-proof actions. If at any time, any one of these macro systems were to move out of their finely tuned adjustments, all life on this planet would blink out of existence into a dark, dead husk.

We should all stop from time to time and not take for granted how special we are, each one of us, created to aspire to Eternal Life.

Oh no! The 'Logic dictates' blah, blah, blah reared it's ugly head again.

Yes, and I have a chance to be elected the Holy Roman Emporer too. All I need to do is line up support from three Archbishops, a King, a Count, a Duke, and a Margrave. Easy peasy.

And a time machine, last but not least. Which is in another, different Promo Pack. And Fed-restricted.

Once in an Infinity R&D it should not come out of an Infinity.

To be fair, do you have a 1% chance of being the HRE, or significantly less than a 1% chance?
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

    Logic Dictates:

"Logic Dictates" that if you deny your customers what they REALLY want; they'll go somewhere else. If 90% of the players want to fly the damn ship, pop it in the C-store to make your sales. Allowing only 1000(?) Connies to exist, for argument's sake, isn't making the overall customer base happy. Quite the opposite. Cryptic better be sure they are making enough money on those 1,000 ships. Does 1000 ships at $400 make them more than X sales at $30? It's a virtual item so it's not like 'making' 100,000 Connies is more expensive than 1,000. And what about the impact of intangibles like 'unhappiness' on future sales you do offer to 'the masses' via the C-store in the future? You can't just look at the single metric that you can make $400 on each Connie and say it's the best deal for Cryptic.
