Sela was great helping out giving orders on ship... after her re-education in a fed facility you can release her as a special BO players can get.

Too many people would go back and replay her episodes with that officer in their landing party, then whinge about the presence of a duplicate Sela ruining their immersion.

Those people are why we can't have nice things.

The Leeta we get/got was a holographic Leeta...not the real thing.

Why would you want a BOFF who was responsible for the death of millions on your crew, even a holographic one?

    Street cred.

You want your captain 'retired' by their first officer? Sela isn't big on playing 2nd banana. ;)

Personally, I'd rather Sela went away. She's gotten out of trouble way too many times now--and knowing her history her current incarceration probably isn't going to last, either--and I for one am tired of it. I certainly have no interest in seeing her on my bridge on top of everything else.

Maybe Mirror Universe Sela is plausible, but I do not know what her story is and what role she has in that universe. Could be a future MI reward since we got MU Hakeev back in 2014.
  • ashstorm1ashstorm1 Member Posts: 679 Arc User
Mayhaps that would be interesting, for the sake of sending her without armor/shield/weapon all alone against a group of Elite enemy NPCs, and have fun witnessing her ultimate demise while we stand watching from afar.

The MU already has a whole damn lot that dosen't make a lick of sense and a mirror sela would just be the cherry on top of that.

Like has been said, it could be interesting, but I don't see a great demand for it. I'm of two minds about it. Mostly just 'meh' about it.

But it's not the worst idea that's ever been floated through here before.
Now a LTS and loving it.

It would also break the story of every existing mission with Sela and preclude future plot developments (since then Sela's out of Cryptic's control, she's our ground minion.) People might scoff at this, but Cryptic takes their setting seriously. They're not going to give players an officer which fundamentally does not work for the STO story arc (note how every other canon character boff has been a complication-free hologram.)

If you want to break it yourself, more power to you (that's what the tailor is here for ) but to put this as a matter of "oh, we'd totally have this if it wasn't for players!" is just hoisting blame on fellow community members for the problems of a faulty assumption (ex. that cryptic can just do this willy-nilly. The use of a likeness can be very rigidly specified by an actor's contract. Crosby's would probably have to be renegotiated to accommodate a new use for the character. That's not impossible, but it makes this hill even steeper to climb.)

A mirror Sela would work better in terms of fitting the reward to the STO story, characters, and setting (ie. it could happen, I doubt it would ever make logical sense for prime Sela to become a crewmember on a Republic or Federation ship). But there's still the question of "is it possible for Cryptic to use Crosby's likeness this way?" If yes, sure! It'd make for a good reward for the next MI event. If not, then oh well.

That's a safety violation. Regulations state that an airlock should be tested with the OSHA approved potato-sack-dummy on a twice monthly basis.

    I got an exemption because:
-1 of them got sentient because of a space anomaly and tried to murder the crew
-2 others got semi-sentient and tried to assimilate the crew into more dummies than they usually are
-1 was turned into a T'Ket clone by Q because it amused him and I had to live with a Iconian Tsundere for 3 weeks
-2 others called in sick on their first day
-3 resigned and tried to sue me for mistreatment
-1 nearly caused a war between 2 factions of a new species
-1 managed to kill two common Doffs and we still don't know how

And the Klingons' PETAQ (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals without Questions) now forbids the dumping of tribbles.

    Mirror Sela doesn't work. Period.

I don't really see how she could exist in the MU. She was the byproduct of a very unique set of circumstances that occurred in the prime universe.

So is every single person who has ever existed. Sela isn't unique in being the product of unique circumstances. Take you, for example. It's unlikely that your parents arrived here from a parallel universe but the circumstances that lead to you, me, and anyone else are fantastically improbable if you look at the grand scale of things.

Now take the odds of every applicable main character having an MU analog (despite the deep historical differences and fundamental separation of the two universes) and you'll find a number that makes any amount of narrative convenience to get an MU Sela moot (different temporal event, same result of placing Tasha Yar with the Romulans.)

There is no physical law governing just how amazingly coincidental the MU is (just take their ship design). It's just a fact of the series.

While she is a great character in the game, I don't think I want a lunatic genocidal war criminal as an officer on my ship. Call me crazy!

Especially one who might harbor personal resentments about having her highest aspirations thwarted. A person might get stabby over something like that, and it's been shown time and again that locks don't concern prime Sela much.

Lol, the Klingon Empire is packed with such, but the Federation is all hugs and kisses with them.

The Mirror Universe is strangely non-divergent. For a place filled with homicidal megalomaniacs, the increased probability of execution of ancestors has not resulted in the elimination of their offspring.

The glaring exception is Mrs. Sisko. Jennifer was alive in the MU but dead in the prime universe. Usually it was the other way around.

So, who exists in the MU is a matter of convenience. Trek writers can do pretty much what they want there and it will somehow work out that everything is the same except what they want to be different.

I'm still waiting to see the MU offspring of Spock and Marlena Moreau. A 1/4 Vulcan Assassin should be an interesting character, and now that the MU has time travel...
  • saurializardsaurializard Member Posts: 4,386 Arc User
Well, it is called the MIRROR universe after all, not the Evil Universe. There has to be as many mirror versions of the Prime universe characters, ships, technology, etc. as possible to earn its name.

For me, this whole universe doesn't make any sense to begin with, with all its similarities when the overall morality, timeline, events, and standards are mostly different, but it's part of the Star Trek mythos and has spawn many homages, tropes, references, etc. for decades, so it gets a pass despite the nonsense.

I prefer to look at the mirror universe as simply an alternate history, with plenty of its own unique events and history that we just haven't seen yet because it's not relevant to the main characters of the series.

And I hope Sela doesn't come back at all, personally. She was fun for a while, but she's starting to feel like a Mary Sue and I just can't buy this redemption arc we've been getting. If the devs wanted to redeem her, she should have gone down covering our escape from ancient Iconia or something.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."
