Info Request For Returning Player

I have recently started playing STO after about a 4-year hiatus. Last night I looked at a KDF Foundry mission I had written back then. I assume there have been many changes to the Foundry since then. When I opened the mission I did not see any obvious 'error' messages or references to non-existent maps, object, etc. I made sure the first transition box reflected the player was leaving from the Beta Quadrant map to the Xarantine System (as maps are different now) then attempted to run the mission. I started in the Beta Quadrant, flew to the Xarantine System in the Xarantine Sector, and the 'Start Mission' dialog appeared and I hit the button. I then found myself back at the starting position in the Beta Quadrant.

I attempted to run just a few of the maps. On a custom space map I got 'Warning: Skipped Probe Binning. Lighting May Be Incorrect' and the planet on the map was just a white ball. If I remember correctly, in the past if you started at say Space Map 1, you could play the rest of the mission from there. When I reached a point where I would transition to the next map, the mission just stopped.

Do I need to re-write the whole mission, or perhaps delete and then re-insert various Maps and objective boxes in the Story Line in an attempt to re-initialize the transition boxes? Or, could it be that I simply tried the Foundry at a time when it isn't functioning right? One individual told me he tried running his Foundry mission and his transitions weren't working either.

I don't know how 'current' many of the older Youtube Foundry Tutorial videos are anymore. Are the ones that Kirkfat made 4-6 years ago still 'current' ? Or have changes been made that require me to view a more up-to-date tutorial series?

Thanks!

Hey, glad to see a return. :) You probably don't need to rebuild much, if anything, but there are a few things you should know.
    1. There is currently a bug with the editor, preventing map transitions (started after Artifacts downtime). Maps have to be tested individually now. This does not affect published missions. https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1228121/foundry-editor-does-not-switch-maps-at-all-when-testing-a-mission
    2. You may find objective triggers not working in the editor too. It's a new random bug. This also does not affect published missions and you can get around it in the editor by inserting a pop-up dialog (I just put "test") before the offending objective in the story tab. Remove when you're through testing. https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1227109/objective-triggers-not-working-in-holodeck-editor
    3. Planet textures have been updated in the main game. However, some weren't hooked up properly and its difficult to tell which from the editor because the preview window still displays the old planet textures. Here's a thread where I put a list together (ultimately, it's not a big deal. Only a small fraction of planets are affected.) https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1227915/some-planets-are-missing-their-textures-listed
    4. Testing a mission by hitting "play from the beginning" (ie. starting from the sector block) is also a no-no. Test maps individually, they'll work when published.
    5. The lighting error is what I'd worry most about. Check your custom space map's backdrop and make sure you didn't do anything too extreme. Ex. a dozen space layers, objects, ect. After you've done this, and swapped the planet for a working one (see thread linked above) publish and test in the main game.

Also, here's a handy youtube playlist of a new tutorial series produced by the Foundry Roundtable. It's geared towards new authors so, having built a mission before, it may just be a refresher. If you have any questions you can always shoot us a line and we'll see if we can put a demo together during one of our regular shows.

    Duncan Idaho,

Thanks for your great information. On my 3 space maps I replaced planet M01 (appears as a white ball) with M04 and I see M04 fine. I still get the 'Skipped Probe Binning - Lighting' message.

You advised checking the maps to see if I had excessive items, and I counted about 24 items on one map (the planet, ships, space docks, satellites, etc, but no 'layers') and was just starting to delete some to test when the account server booted me out (I kind of figured something might be wrong because just prior to being booted the map was unstable; my ship started spinning uncontrollably and when I got it to stop I couldn't move forward / backwards).

In the past I had no trouble with the number of items on any of the mission maps. Do you know of a max item number or number of items at which problems usually start to occur?

You also mentioned that doing the 'Play Mission From Beginning' is not good. In the past I used to do that all the time without any trouble. Is that a recent thing?

Glad I could be of help. :)

The "play from beginning" bug is a recent thing. As for the number of assets, there's a limit in place to try to keep authors from going overboard but it is possible to break things even without maxing that out (based on polygon count, I think, which the asset limit tries to be a proxy for) but that takes far more than 24 items (Roundtable was building an artificial orbital ring when we killed the Foundry a few shows ago).

What I was referring to was your map's backdrop, not on-map assets. Take a look at that and see if you've made any unusual modifications there. If you have trouble finding it: when you have that map open in the editor, without any objects selected, backdrop options are right below the bar where you can change the name of the map (on the bottom toolbar below the map window, where asset options will also show when you have something selected.)

You might try starting that from scratch, since the backdrop is what affects map lighting. Set the map's backdrop to some other default, then customize it if necessary. Fun tip: with lighting 2.0 some custom backdrops having working lighting effects (which ones are linked below). ATM, this is the best way to make your space maps look pretty at higher graphics settings (since lighting 2.0 does not work with the default backdrop lighting effects.)

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1227924/is-your-space-lighting-looking-a-little-flat-you-have-a-few-options

If you still don't have any luck, it would probably be helpful to provide a bit more information on the error message. Exactly how is it being displayed? Do you see any problems on map? Does it show up when you publish the mission?

As for spinning: new bug. What seems to happen is that sometimes the editor swaps ground and space movement profiles/physics. On some occasions, your ship also plummets. Reload the editor completely then try again. If it still doesn't work, restart the game.

As for getting booted: if it just happened then we're in our regular Thursday maintenance/patching downtime.
