So many interesting things to see in space...

I had just completed a mission and was returning home to Earth Space Dock to do my usual post-mission clean up when this thing catches my eye.

What is this thing, a monument of some sort? I was near the Wolf 359 system at the time. It seems like every time I am out and about I spot something interesting and can't help but stop for a closer look. Anyone care to share screenshots of other interesting things they have seen while returning from a completed mission or just out exploring?

It's the Wolf 359 graveyard memorial, where the Borg inflicted the worst curbstomp battle on the unprepared Federation. 39 ships out of 40 were destroyed while not inflicting a single significant damage on one single Borg cube by the time the Enterprise-D arrived.

These events happened in the Best of Both Worlds dual-partner in Star Trek the New Generation and in the first episode of Deep Space Nine.

There's also the Romulus monument in the Romulus system, and the location where the "Terradome" STF ocurred still has the "Terradome" station in it.

It was never confirmed in the canon. The official Star Trek site says the Klingons didn't arrive in time while VOY: Unity hints that either the Klingons met the Borg Cube but didn't fare better, or they met another Borg Cube that carried those assimilated at Wolf 359 before heading back to Borg Space, explaining why Voyager had Borg from Wolf 359 in the Delta Quadrant.

Why was there just one cube? Why did the Borg send just one cube?

The Borg only needed one cube to assimilate Earth. Resistance is futile. (Knowing the root command to put hardware into hibernation mode, however, is not.)
